Chapter 164: The Dreamer’s Logic
The silence in the alcove was not peaceful. It was predatory.
Vane stood at the threshold. His boots were fixed to the obsidian floor. A shiver moved through him. It was a physical rejection of the reality in front of him.
The purple ribbon of mana in Nyx’s hand stopped its geometric dance. Her eyes were deep vortices of violet and shadow. They locked onto his.
Vane’s silver mana thrummed.
[Authority Active: Silver Fang]
A thin, frigid coat of energy manifested beneath his skin. It armored his organs against the pressure.
Nyx did not move from her velvet cushions. She watched him.
For a second, the Void Chambers disappeared. The floating crystals, the lake of liquid mana, the distant hum of the students. It all faded into a grey blur. There was only the girl in the shadows.
“The silver one,” Nyx said.
Her voice was slow. Syrupy. It dripped with a boredom heavy enough to drown in.
“I remember you from the gala. You stood in the corner. You looked like you wanted to set the curtains on fire.”
Vane did not relax. He remembered the gala. The stiff gold embroidery. The suffocating scent of noble perfumes. He had seen Nyx there. She had been slumped in a high-backed chair, ignoring the toasts of the Great House heirs.
“You were asleep,” Vane replied. His voice was flat.
“I am always asleep,” Nyx said. A tiny, lazy smirk tugged at her mouth. “The world is too loud when my eyes are open. And right now, your mana is screaming. It smells like winter and old iron. It is very distracting.”
Vane took a step forward.
He intended to close the distance. He lifted his boot. He placed it down.
He didn’t move.
Vane frowned. He looked at his feet. He had taken a stride. Physically, the motion was complete. Spatially, he was in the exact same coordinate he had started in.
He tried again. He stepped left.
The world shifted right.
[Target Analysis] Effect: Unknown Status: [Logic Fracture]
Vane’s heart hammered. It wasn’t an invisible wall. It was worse. The vector of “forward” had been detached from the concept of “movement.”
“Don’t try to walk,” Nyx whispered. She twisted the purple ribbon. “Here, distance is an opinion. You are trying to force your way in. You are a Rat. You think every room is a cage you have to break into.”
Vane stopped moving. He stood perfectly still.
He engaged [Usurper].
The world desaturated.
He saw the lines. The air around Nyx wasn’t empty. It was a kaleidoscope of shattered math. The spatial coordinates were randomized. They swirled in a chaotic orbit around her. Every time he applied force with his Body, the equation shifted to negate it with Mind.
He couldn’t fight this physically. He couldn’t stab a concept.
Vane exhaled.
He dropped his guard.
It was the hardest thing he had ever done. Every instinct screamed at him to fight. To flare his mana. To assert dominance. He silenced the Rat. He shut down the paranoia that kept him alive in Oakhaven.
He stopped trying to be there. He just was there.
The chaotic lines slowed. The fracture stabilized.
“Better,” Nyx murmured.
Before Vane could speak, heavy footsteps echoed against the obsidian walls.
The spell broke. The fracture shattered.
Kaelen stepped into the alcove.
He was flanked by two other Second Years. Kaelen’s face was flushed. His eyes burned with the humiliation of the somatic hall. His bronze mana flared in a shroud that vibrated with suppressed rage.
He saw Vane standing near Nyx.
“Move, First Year,” Kaelen snapped.
He stepped past Vane. He looked at Nyx with a frantic, terrified reverence.
“Nyx,” Kaelen said. His voice pitched up. “This trash is disturbing you. He had his fun in the halls, but this is the Void. He doesn’t belong in this corner.”
Vane didn’t turn around. He didn’t acknowledge Kaelen. He kept his silver eyes fixed on Nyx.
The purple ribbon in her hand snapped.
The air in the alcove curdled.
Nyx didn’t stand. She didn’t lift her hand. She exhaled a single, bored breath.
[Authority Active: Dreamscape] Skill: [The Rabbit Hole]
A wave of violet pressure erupted from the cushions. It bypassed the physical defenses of the room. The obsidian floor didn’t crack. The reality on top of it warped.
To Vane’s [Usurper] vision, the world looked like a charcoal sketch being erased by a wet thumb.
Kaelen stopped.
He looked down.
The floor was gone.
“I didn’t give you permission to speak, Kaelen,” Nyx said.
Her voice dropped an octave. The boredom vanished. It was replaced by a cold, sharp edge. The violet vortices in her eyes spun.
“You are noisy. Your bronze energy is a mess of friction. Go find a hole.”
She flicked her finger.
Kaelen screamed.
It wasn’t a push. Gravity inverted. Kaelen fell up. He slammed into the ceiling of the alcove. Then he slid sideways, tumbling through the air as if he were sliding down an invisible chute. The other two Second Years grabbed their heads. They vomited as their inner ears failed to reconcile the geometry.
They were shoved out.
The spatial distortion ejected them from the alcove. It dumped them onto the main floor of the Void Chamber in a heap of tangled limbs and bronze mana.
Nyx closed her eyes.
The pressure vanished. Kaelen was gone. The silence returned.
She opened one eye. She looked at Vane.
“You are different,” she noted. She tilted her head. “You didn’t vomit. Most people vomit when the floor eats them.”
“I have a strong stomach,” Vane said.
“Your friends have EX-rank signatures too,” Nyx murmured. She looked past him, toward the entrance where Valerica stood. “The sun-girl. The flicker-mage. And the one with the bleeding eyes. The girl who carries Samsara.”
She paused.
“A pack of monsters in a single year. It is almost interesting.”
“We are here to use the Chambers,” Vane said. “We didn’t come to entertain you.”
“Then go,” Nyx said.
She closed her eye again. The violet vortices vanished behind the dark curtain of her lashes.
“Take the northern platform. The mana-vein there is unfiltered. Most of the Second Years are too afraid to touch it. It burns the channels. If your silver fang is as sharp as it looks, maybe it can cut through the heat.”
She paused.
“But be careful, little monster.”
Vane stopped.
“Isole saw a frost that wouldn’t melt,” Nyx whispered to the empty air. “In my dreams, I saw the same thing. It wasn’t on the walls of your villa.”
She pointed a languid finger at Vane’s chest.
“It was inside you.”
Vane felt a sharp prickle of ice in his marrow.
He didn’t ask how she knew. In the world of an EX-rank [Dreamscape] user, privacy was a myth.
He nodded once. He turned and walked away.
He exited the alcove. The air pressure returned to normal. The sounds of the Void Chamber rushed back into his ears. The hum of crystals. The bubbling lake.
Valerica, Ashe, and Isole stood near the edge of the obsidian walkway.
Valerica’s hand rested on the hilt of her practice sword.
“What did she want?” Ashe whispered. She glanced at the slumped forms of Kaelen and his crew. They were currently crawling toward the exit. “Did she just throw Kaelen at the ceiling?”
“She wants us to stay out of her way,” Vane said. His voice was level. “And she told us where the real power is.”
He pointed to the far end of the chamber.
“We are taking the northern platform.”
Isole looked at him. Her emerald and scarlet eyes swirled with deep concern.
“Vane,” Isole said. “The northern platform is over the primary vent. The mana density is critical. If you lose focus, it causes core collapse.”
“Then we won’t lose focus,” Vane replied.
The group moved.
They walked to the north side of the lake.
The platform was a massive disk of white quartz. It was suspended by chains of enchanted iron directly over a swirling vortex of liquid mana. The air here was distorted. Heat waves rippled upward, carrying the sheer, crushing volume of the island’s core energy.
It felt like standing in front of a furnace that breathed ice.
Vane stepped onto the quartz.
The surge hit him.
It was raw. Jagged. Unfiltered. The environmental mana tried to invade his channels. It tore at the lining of his veins.
He sat in the center. He crossed his legs.
“Formation,” Vane ordered.
Valerica took the spot to his left. Her gravity-sense anchored the platform. It stabilized the vibrations.
Ashe sat to his right. Her flicker-mana acted as a buffer. It vibrated at high speed to deflect the jagged interference.
Isole sat behind them. Her authority, [Samsara], opened wide. She scanned the flow, predicting the surges before they hit.
Vane closed his eyes.
[Authority Active: Silver Fang]
The silver mana in his core roared.
It surged out of his channels. It met the incoming flood of environmental energy. It wasn’t a circulation. It was a hunt.
The silver energy acted as a predatory filter. It caught the raw mana. It shredded it. It refined the jagged power into a cold, usable stream.
The quartz platform began to hum. The white stone turned a brilliant, translucent silver as the four EX-rank authorities synchronized.
In the corner of the room, Nyx opened one eye.
She watched the silver light illuminate the northern end of the chamber. A small, knowing smile touched her lips.
