Chapter 181: The Second Nest
The East Ridge was a jagged spine of granite that overlooked the salt flats. The climb was steep and unforgiving. Frost had turned the narrow goat paths into ribbons of slick ice. Vane led the way. He used the butt of his spear as a walking stick. His breath came in steady and rhythmic plumes of white mist.
Isole followed three paces behind. Her emerald dark green hair was pulled back into a tight and functional braid. She looked focused. She adjusted the heavy straps of her mana-harness as she walked. The cold did not seem to bother her as much as the silence of the ridge did.
“The wind is shifting,” Vane said. He stopped at a plateau. He looked toward a cluster of boulders that had been blackened by an oily secretion. “The smell is stronger here. It is like burning copper and wet rot.”
Isole stepped up beside him. She tapped her staff against the frozen ground to test the vibration.
“The Academy report was definitely wrong,” she noted. She looked at the massive trail of displaced earth. “There aren’t two smaller hives. The resonance is coming from a single and unified source. It is much deeper than we expected.”
Vane knelt and pressed his palm to the earth. He closed his eyes. He activated his internal detection.
[Target Analysis: Environmental Resonance Detected]
“The hives merged. It is not a pair of nests. It is a unified colony. The vibration is perfectly synchronized. It feels like a single heart beating under the stone.”
They moved around the bend. The hive entrance was a massive and jagged rift in the cliffside. It was thirty feet wide. The edges were coated in a thick and translucent resin that hummed with a faint and sickly energy.
Eight Grain-Maw Soldiers stood guard outside the rift.
Vane’s eyes narrowed. These were not the scavengers from the village square or the drones from the first nest. These were true Soldiers. Every one of them radiated the mana-signature of a Rank 4 threat. It was an impossible density for this sector. The Queen they had killed earlier was Rank 4, yet here stood eight guardians of equal power.
“The scaling is wrong,” Vane muttered. “These things shouldn’t be this strong. They are mutated. If the guards are Rank 4, the Alpha in this nest is going to be Rank 5.”
The Soldiers did not rush in a mindless swarm. They fanned out. They utilized their numbers to cut off the path back down the ridge. They possessed a rudimentary tactical intelligence.
Vane launched himself forward. He utilized the Combat Art: Argent Horizon, 2nd Form – Lunar Deflection (Grade B).
He became a silver streak. He slammed into the lead Soldier. The Star-Steel tip struck the head-plate. It did not pierce instantly. The chitin was dense. Vane had to twist the shaft and channel a pulse of Authority: [Silver Fang] to force the point through.
The Soldier shrieked. It lashed out with a serrated claw.
Vane parried the strike. But the second and third Soldiers were already closing in. One of them lunged from the side. Its mandible caught Vane across the ribs.
The sound of metal tearing was sharp. Vane was thrown five feet across the ice. He rolled and came up on one knee. Blood was already soaking into his grey tunic. The wound was deep. The serrated edge had torn through his leather armor and the skin beneath.
“Vane!” Isole shouted.
She didn’t hesitate. She slammed the butt of her staff into the ice. She channeled her mana into a high-tier recovery sequence.
In Vane’s vision, the [Usurper] overlay flickered to life, identifying the incoming support.
[Skill Detected: Absolute Restoration (Grade A)]
To Isole, it was simply the most powerful stabilization spell she knew. To Vane, the label confirmed the sheer quality of her output.
A blinding pillar of white and gold light erupted from the ground beneath Vane. It did not just glow. It hissed with the force of high-speed mana-particles. Vane felt the searing heat. The torn flesh of his side reassembled in a heartbeat. The jagged edges of the wound smoothed over. Even his mana-channels were stabilized. The fraying energy from his Authority was smoothed out by the spell.
The pain vanished. Vane stood up. He felt a surge of renewed vigor.
“Thanks,” Vane said. He did not look back. They had been doing this for six months. He knew Isole was already preparing the next support lattice.
“Finish them!” Isole barked.
She followed the spell with a concentrated beam of Holy light. It struck the lead Maw in its multifaceted eyes. The beast recoiled and thrashed.
Vane utilized the Combat Art: Argent Horizon, 1st Form – Quicksilver Thrust combined with Authority: [Silver Fang] (Grade A).
He moved like a ghost. He engaged the Soldiers in a brutal dance of steel and chitin. He had to wait for the joints to expose themselves. He had to bait the strikes and then punish the recovery. He delivered a series of precise thrusts. Each strike required a concentrated burst of silver mana to overcome the natural durability of the Rank 4 armor.
Isole provided constant support. She used smaller pulses of light to guide Vane’s movements. She kept the other Soldiers at bay with a flickering barrier. It took several minutes of high-intensity combat to clear the plateau.
The last Soldier collapsed with a spear through its central nerve cluster. It thrashed once and then went still. Silence returned to the East Ridge.
Vane stood in the center of the carnage. He was breathing hard. He looked down at the hole in his tunic. There was blood on the fabric. But the skin beneath was perfectly smooth.
“The Soldiers are denser here,” Vane noted. He wiped his spear on the grass. “The Star-Steel is meeting resistance. These things are on par with the Queen we fought yesterday. This isn’t a natural colony growth.”
Isole walked over to him. She was leaning on her staff. Her face was pale. The restoration spell had taken a significant toll on her mana reserves. Her emerald green hair had come loose from her braid.
“The resin,” Isole said. She pointed to the entrance of the rift. “They are coating themselves in it. It acts as a mana-dampener. It makes the chitin harder to pierce with direct energy. My light is reflecting off them too easily.”
Vane looked at the entrance. The scratching from inside was getting louder.
“We are not going in there today,” Vane decided.
“I agree,” Isole said. She wiped sweat from her forehead. “The restoration was effective. But it burned through my core. If we encounter a Queen inside I will not have the output to save us.”
“We go back to the ridgeline,” Vane said. “We set up a fortified camp. We hit the interior at dawn.”
They walked back toward a shallow cave they had spotted earlier. They moved with the easy familiarity of partners. They did not need to discuss the details. They knew each other’s limits. Vane laid out the thermal blankets. Isole set the perimeter wards.
As they sat by the small mana-heater, Isole watched Vane sharpen his spear.
“We were lucky in the Iron Groves,” Isole said softly. “Valerica’s gravity was a good counter for the constructs. But here it is just us.”
“We aren’t lucky,” Vane replied. He did not look up from the whetstone. “We are prepared. Your restoration is faster than anything the Academy healers can do. As long as you stay behind me, we win.”
Isole looked at him. She saw the steady focus in his eyes. She felt a quiet and familiar warmth in her chest.
“Get some sleep, Isole,” Vane said. “I have the first watch.”
Isole nodded. She laid down on the blanket. Outside, the wind began to howl. Deep under the ridge the vibration continued. It was getting faster. It was no longer a heartbeat.
It was a countdown.
