Chapter 25: Echoes in the Spine
Vane showed up at the edge of the fog sector before dawn. He was skipping his morning physical conditioning run with the main body of first year students. Let them jog on the manicured paths. He had a different kind of conditioning in mind.
He expected to find Senna waiting on the balcony shivering in her chair. Instead she was standing.
Vane stopped by the crumbling pillar. His breath caught in the cold air. Senna was leaning heavily on the balcony railing. Her body was a thin rigid line against the grey sky. The practice spear was propped beside her.
“You are out of the chair,” Vane said approaching slowly. It felt like approaching a wild animal that had finally managed to stand up. She looked dangerous and fragile all at once.
Senna did not turn around. “The air is thin today. The dead mana is quiet. A rare mercy.”
She turned slowly to face him. Standing, even hunched as she was, she was imposing. The hospital gown hung on her like a shroud but her eyes were burning with a feverish intensity.
“Today,” she said picking up the spear with a hand that only trembled slightly. “We are done with spinning in the air. Today we learn what happens when velocity meets an object.”
She tossed him the spear. He caught it. The familiar weight settled into his hands.
“Penetration drills,” she said. She pointed to a massive water stained concrete support pillar. The concrete was rotten and crumbling in places but still solid at its core. “It does not hit back. But it does not move either. It is the perfect enemy for you right now. You need to learn the difference between pushing and striking.”
Vane stepped up to the pillar. He began to spin the spear finding the rhythm of the Argent Horizon forms she had shown him.
“Go,” Senna ordered.
Vane waited for the alignment. He snapped the spear forward.
THACK.
The tip struck the concrete. It chipped the surface. The impact jarred Vane’s arms killing the vibration instantly.
“Garbage,” Senna spat. She was standing behind him leaning on her broom handle like a cane. “You are pushing with your muscles. You are trying to muscle the world. The power does not come from your strength boy. It comes from the spiral.”
She tapped his back heel sharply with the broom.
“You are fighting the air. You are fighting the friction. Because you are fighting the world you are slow.”
Vane tried again. He focused on grounding his rear foot. He tried to relax his grip.
THWACK.
The sound was louder. A larger chip of concrete flew off the pillar.
“Better,” Senna said. “But you are still thinking about the impact. You are bracing for the shock before you even hit. If you brace the mana stops flowing. If the mana stops the spear stops.”
Vane gritted his teeth. Thrust. Snap back. Thrust. Snap back.
THWACK. THWACK. THWACK.
Sweat dripped into his eyes. His lungs burned. The concrete pillar began to show a distinct crater where his point was striking repeatedly. But it was just surface damage. He was bludgeoning it.
On the next thrust his focus wavered for a split second. He drove hard but as he tried to snap back into guard his lead foot slipped on the damp flagstones. He stumbled throwing his arms out to catch himself.
He crashed into Senna.
It wasn’t a hard collision but for a woman in her condition it was catastrophic. She let out a sharp pained gasp as she lost her balance. Her legs buckled instantly.
“Senna!”
Vane scrambled to catch her. He grabbed her waist and pulled her against him to keep her from hitting the floor. He spun them both around absorbing the momentum so he took the impact against the railing instead of her.
The contact triggered the engine.
As soon as his hands touched her the Static flared. It wasn’t a slow build up. It was an instant violent discharge of stored energy. Her body went rigid in his arms. The black veins on her neck pulsed.
“Easy I got you,” Vane murmured lowering them both carefully until he was kneeling holding her against his chest.
She was burning up. She was a reactor going critical.
“Let… go…” she gasped. “The recoil… will burn… you.”
“Shut up,” Vane said. “I am grounded.”
He held her firmly. He closed his eyes. He didn’t try to fight the energy. He tried to stabilize it. And then the Usurper woke up.
It sensed the connection. It lunged for the prize.
[Target Analyzed: Senna]
[Attempting Authority Access: Silver Fang…]
Vane reached out with his mind trying to wrap his influence around the source of her power. He expected it to slide out easily. He hit a wall. It felt like slamming face first into a vault door. The Authority was there humming with terrifying power but it was locked down tight.
[Access Denied.]
Vane grit his teeth. He pushed harder but the resistance was absolute. He realized the problem. An Authority was the core of a person. A simple touch wasn’t enough.
But the Usurper was a thief. And a thief never left empty handed.
[Secondary Pathway Detected: Muscle Memory / Neural Pathways.]
[Siphoning Kinetic Experience…]
Vane felt a sudden sickening lurch in his stomach. It wasn’t a power. It was a Ghost.
For a split second he wasn’t Vane. He felt the sensation of lighter bones. He felt the phantom pain of a scar on a left knee he didn’t have.
And he felt the Spiral.
He felt ten thousand hours of repetition flooding into his nervous system. He felt the internal mana circuitry—how the mana needed to vortex through his marrow and into the spear to strip away the resistance of the world. He felt the exact millisecond where the hips snapped to convert rotation into linear death.
He didn’t steal her power. He stole her mastery. He felt the phantom sensation of a thousand perfect thrusts overlaid on top of his own clumsy ones.
The sensation vanished. Senna gasped and went limp in his arms the seizure passing.
“Dammit woman,” Vane breathed his heart hammering. “You are running way too hot.”
Senna opened her eyes. They were bleary and unfocused for a moment. Then she looked up at him. She didn’t pull away immediately. She looked confused. She rubbed her arm as if she felt a sudden chill.
“Shut up freshman,” she whispered hoarsely. “Help me to the chair.”
Vane helped her up. He got her settled in the wheelchair. She was done for the day. The brief burst of energy was completely gone leaving her looking more wasted than ever.
But as Vane stepped away to retrieve the practice spear he felt… adjusted.
He picked up the weapon. His hands shifted on the wood. He didn’t think about it. His fingers found a grip that was different than before. His elbows tucked in tighter. His spine elongated. It wasn’t his posture. It was hers.
He looked at the concrete pillar. He didn’t think about the mechanics. He just let the ghost take the wheel.
He began the spin.
Hiss.
The sound was cleaner. Sharper. He began the Spiral Circulation within his arms.
He waited for the alignment. He didn’t push with his shoulder. He just released the tension in his hips.
First Form: Quicksilver Thrust.
SNAP.
There was no thud.
CRACK.
The spear shot forward faster than his eyes could track. It struck the center of the crater. It didn’t just chip the stone. The sheer velocity drove the un-enchanted steel tip deep into the solid concrete. The stone around the impact site didn’t crumble. It fractured in a perfect spiderweb pattern from the stress of the strike.
Vane stood there at full extension. His arm wasn’t jarring. His balance was perfect. He pulled the spear back. It required a hard yank to dislodge it from the stone.
He stared at the deep hole. He hadn’t used the Authority. The stone wasn’t cut by space. It was broken by the Argent Horizon. It was broken by Mastery.
He looked back at Senna. She was staring at the hole in the pillar. Then she looked at Vane. Her eyes narrowed.
“That was…” she trailed off. She looked suspicious. “That was correct.”
She looked at him with a strange intensity.
“You have been fighting the spear for a week. And suddenly you hold it like you were born with it.”
Vane looked at his hands. He could still feel the fading echo of the download. The stolen sweat of her past training sessions.
“I told you,” Vane said quietly masking his own unease. “I am a quick study.”
