Chapter 211: Chapter-211
But more than that—more shocking than the informal scene—was Heena’s expression.
Just a moment before she’d noticed them, she’d been smiling. Actually, genuinely smiling. Her eyes had been soft and warm as she looked at Larus. Her whole face had been relaxed and affectionate in a way none of them had ever, *ever* seen directed at them.
Even after all these years of marriage—even during the brief honeymoon period when they’d first married her—they had never seen that expression on her face.
Never seen her smile like that.
Never seen her look at anyone with such unguarded fondness.
And this man—this newcomer, this sixth husband, this pretty prince who’d only been married to her for a few months—could get that expression from her so easily?
It felt like a knife twisting in their chests.
The moment Heena noticed them, her entire expression changed.
It was like watching a door slam shut. Like watching warmth drain out of a room. Like watching the sun disappear behind storm clouds.
Her face became completely cold. Expressionless. Her eyes went flat and distant. Her posture straightened into rigid imperial formality.
She looked at them with the same warmth one might show to strangers. To servants. To enemies.
“What is it?” she said, her voice completely devoid of any emotion.
The five consorts stood there, frozen for a moment longer, still processing the shock of what they’d witnessed.
Then they remembered themselves and bowed in unison.
“We greet Your Majesty,” they said formally.
Heena didn’t even nod in acknowledgment. She just tilted her head slightly and repeated in that same cold tone: “What is it?”
They could not believe this was the same woman who’d been smiling so beautifully just seconds ago. The contrast was staggering. Painful, even.
Kieran, as the most senior consort, spoke first. He cleared his throat carefully.
“Your Majesty, we are here to… to thank you for your assistance yesterday. In the court proceedings.”
The other four nodded in agreement, their expressions carefully neutral.
Adrian added, “You could have let the scandal continue. You could have allowed our reputations to be destroyed. But you… you cleared our names. We are grateful.”
Damien spoke up, trying to inject some warmth into his voice: “We wanted to express our appreciation properly. Perhaps we could—”
Heena raised one hand, cutting him off mid-sentence.
“Consorts,” she said, her tone completely flat and cold, like winter ice, “what you said yesterday in court, what you did—even you know that wasn’t entirely truthful.”
They all went very still.
Heena’s eyes swept over all five of them with something like contempt mixed with exhaustion.
“I did not completely convict you because the paternity test proved you were not the biological father of that child. That is a fact. But that does NOT mean I believe you were innocent of all wrongdoing. That does not mean I’m giving you forgiveness or a fresh start or anything resembling mercy.”
Her voice remained absolutely level, but there was steel underneath every word.
“Secondly,” she continued, “I am standing here calmly. You are still living in this palace. You still have your titles as imperial consorts. But none of that is because I have some lingering feelings or affection for you. Don’t mistake my restraint for weakness or sentimentality.”
She paused, letting that sink in.
“The only—the ONLY—reason you are still here, still alive, still free, is because your mothers begged me to spare you. They petitioned me directly. They offered their service as advisors in exchange for your lives. They sacrificed their marriages, their family connections, their entire futures to save you.”
The five consorts’ faces had gone from pale to completely white.
“So keep that in mind,” Heena finished coldly. “Every breath you take, every meal you eat, every comfortable bed you sleep in—you owe to them. Not to any mercy from me. Not to any affection I might have once held. You owe everything to the mothers you never appreciated while they were suffering.”
The silence that followed was absolutely crushing.
Lucian found his voice first, though it came out hoarse: “Your Majesty, we… we understand. We are grateful to our mothers. We—”
“Are you?” Heena interrupted, her voice sharp. “Are you really? Because during the divorce proceedings, I didn’t see any of you stand up for them. I didn’t see you defend them against your fathers’ cruelty. I didn’t see you acknowledge the years of suffering they endured.”
She looked at Adrian specifically.
“Adrian. Your mother was pushed into a frozen pool by your father and nearly died from pneumonia. She was thrown out of a carriage in winter. She was emotionally tortured for twenty years because she wasn’t her dead sister. And you sat there silent during her divorce hearing. Silent.”
Adrian flinched like he’d been struck.
Heena’s gaze moved to Kieran.
“Kieran. Your mother is a princess who gave up her entire kingdom to marry your father. She endured decades of humiliation from a maid—a MAID—who your father took as a mistress. And you did nothing. Said nothing.”
Kieran’s jaw clenched, but he couldn’t meet her eyes.
“Lucian. Damien.” Heena’s voice was relentless. “Your mothers fought for you. Sacrificed for you. And what did you do? You stayed neutral. You stayed safe. You let them suffer alone.”
The five consorts stood there, unable to speak, unable to defend themselves, because everything she was saying was absolutely true.
Heena’s expression became, if possible, even colder.
“So no,” she said clearly. “I don’t want your thanks. I don’t want your gratitude. I don’t want anything from you except to stay out of my sight and not cause any more problems.”
She gestured dismissively.
“Your mothers will be joining my advisory council next week. They will have offices in the administrative wing. They will have authority and respect and everything they were denied in their marriages. And you will treat them with the dignity they deserve, or I will make you regret it. Are we understood?”
“Yes, Your Majesty,” they said in unison, their voices barely above whispers.
“Good. Now leave.”
They didn’t argue. Didn’t try to say anything else. They just bowed deeply and turned to go.
But as they were walking away, Raphael—who’d been completely silent until now—turned back and said quietly:
“Your Majesty… I am sorry. Truly. For everything.”
Heena looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said, just as quietly, “Your apology means nothing to me, Raphael. Save it for your mother—if she’ll even accept it.”
Raphael’s face crumpled slightly, but he nodded and turned away, following the others down the corridor.
—
After they’d disappeared from sight, Heena let out a long, exhausted breath.
She felt Larus’s hand on her shoulder—gentle, supportive, not demanding anything.
“That was harsh,” he said softly. Not judging, just observing.
“They deserved it,” Heena replied. “And honestly, I was being kind. I could have said much worse.”
“I know,” Larus said. He squeezed her shoulder gently. “But are you alright? That couldn’t have been easy.”
Heena turned to look at him—this man who’d spent the entire night sleeping outside her door just because he wanted to see her when she woke up. This man who’d defended himself against five assassins with a dessert fork. This man who made her tea and brought her jaggery and worried about her health.
