Chapter 27: Chapter-27
A month ago, she’d been drowning—desperate, paranoid, drinking herself into oblivion while her five consorts openly courted Lady Seraphina. He’d pitied her then, even as he’d disapproved of her methods. The forced marriages, the political blackmail, the increasingly erratic decisions.
Now? Now she was sharp, focused, ruthless. She’d stripped Duke Adrian of half his power in open court. Demoted him from First Consort to Second Concubine with a smile. Humiliated Lady Seraphina before the entire nobility. Reorganized military command with surgical precision.
It was like watching a different woman entirely.
“Your Grace?”
Robbiston turned to find his aide, Captain Chen, approaching with a salute. “Report.”
“The northern garrison sent another inquiry about Prince Kieran’s whereabouts. The soldiers are getting restless. They want orders directly from their commander.” Chen hesitated. “Sir, there are rumors. Some say the consorts have been imprisoned. Others whisper about assassination.”
“Dismissed as groundless speculation,” Robbiston said firmly, though his gut twisted.
“Yes, sir. But… the western border troops under General Lucian are asking similar questions. And the temple officials want to speak with High Priest Raphael about preparations for the tournament blessing.” Chen met his gaze. “The longer this silence continues, the harder it becomes to maintain order.”
Robbiston nodded slowly. “I’m aware, Captain. Dismissed.”
As Chen left, the old general stared back out the window. He had three choices, each with consequences.
One: Trust the Empress completely. Accept her word that the consorts were fine, ask no further questions, maintain absolute loyalty. This was what his oath demanded—unquestioning service to the throne.
But what if she had imprisoned them? What if she was torturing them in revenge for their betrayal? Could he stand by and allow that, even if they’d plotted against her first?
Two: Investigate quietly. Use his position and influence to find out the truth. If the consorts were being held unjustly, intervene through proper channels.
But this would be a betrayal of sorts. Going behind the Empress’s back, undermining her authority. If she discovered it—and she would, the woman missed nothing—his loyalty would be questioned forever.
Three: Force the issue. Demand a formal audience, require her to produce the consorts or provide legitimate explanation. Put duty to the empire’s stability above personal loyalty to one ruler.
But this could trigger exactly the kind of crisis Lady Seraphina was hoping for. Play right into whatever game she was orchestrating.
Robbiston closed his eyes, suddenly feeling every one of his sixty years. When had serving the throne become so complicated?
“Father always said you were too honorable for court politics.”
The voice made him spin. A figure emerged from a shadowed alcove—a young woman in the simple dress of a palace servant, but her bearing suggested otherwise. One of the Empress’s shadow guards, he realized. The rare female among them.
“Her Majesty wishes you to know something,” the woman said quietly, her masked face revealing nothing. “The royal consorts are undergoing a purification ritual. Requested by High Priest Raphael himself—a week of fasting, prayer, and complete isolation to prepare spiritually for the Grand Tournament. It’s an old tradition, rarely practiced anymore.”
Robbiston’s eyes narrowed. “Why wasn’t this announced publicly?”
“Because it’s meant to be private. Sacred. The consorts specifically requested discretion—they didn’t want their devotion to become a spectacle.” The woman’s tone never wavered. “Her Majesty honored their wishes. She assumed their absence would be understood as tournament preparation.”
It was plausible. Barely. The timing was suspicious, the secrecy questionable, but technically it fit within traditional practices.
“When will they emerge?”
“The morning of the tournament. Cleansed, strengthened, ready to compete for the empire’s glory.” The woman began to fade back into shadow. “Her Majesty thought you deserved to know the truth, given your loyal service. She asks that you help her protect their privacy during this sacred time.”
And then she was gone, leaving Robbiston alone with more questions than answers.
A purification ritual. Perfectly timed to explain their absence without revealing anything concrete. If it was true, interfering would be a grave insult to both the consorts and religious tradition. If it was a lie, he was being played.
Lady Seraphina’s tearful face flashed in his memory, then the Empress’s cold smile.
“Damn politics,” he muttered, turning from the window. He’d give it two more days. If the consorts didn’t appear by then, if there was no further evidence of this “ritual,” he’d have to act. His oath demanded he protect the empire, even from its Empress if necessary.
But for now, he’d maintain appearances. Report the “ritual” explanation to those who asked. Keep the military calm. Watch closely.
And pray he was making the right choice.
As he walked away, he didn’t notice another shadow detaching from the wall—this one reporting directly back to Lady Seraphina. The White Lotus now knew exactly what excuse the Empress had prepared.
And she was already planning how to dismantle it.
The game accelerated. In the secret chamber, five men suffered. In the palace, two women maneuvered. And caught between them, honorable soldiers like Robbiston tried desperately to choose the right side.
Not knowing that in wars like this, there were no right sides.
Only survivors.

At this time in imperial office
Heena was reviewing grain shipment documents when the temperature in her office dropped noticeably. She didn’t look up from the parchment, simply said, “Report.”
A shadow guard materialized from the darkness beside her desk, kneeling with military precision. His masked face tilted down in deference. “Your Majesty. Urgent intelligence.”
Now she looked up, setting down her quill. “Speak.”
“Lady Seraphina has mobilized her network. Seventeen letters dispatched within six hours—all expressing concern for the royal consorts’ wellbeing.” His voice remained flat, emotionless. “Marquis Halverton is questioning soldiers in Prince Kieran’s barracks. Countess Westbrook is spreading worry among temple officials. Lord Chen is encouraging merchants to discuss Duke Adrian’s unusual absence from business affairs.”
Heena’s expression didn’t change, but her mind raced. Faster than expected. The white lotus was moving aggressively.
“She visited Duke Robbiston personally this afternoon,” the guard continued. “Employed tears and appeals to honor. The Duke agreed to make discreet inquiries through proper channels.”
“Of course he did.” Heena leaned back, fingers steepled. “Robbiston is honorable to a fault. What’s his current stance?”
“Conflicted. His loyalty to Your Majesty is unquestionable, but he values propriety above politics. If he believes the consorts are unjustly imprisoned or endangered…” The guard let the implication hang.
“He’ll feel duty-bound to investigate regardless of my authority.” Heena nodded slowly. “Timeline?”
“Within two days, the questions will become formal inquiries. Within three, demands for proof of wellbeing. The military barracks are already restless—Prince Kieran’s northern soldiers are particularly agitated. His second-in-command has been asking pointed questions about the Prince’s whereabouts.”
System 427 materialized beside her, invisible to the guard, his golden form dim with worry. Only Heena could see him.
“What about the temple?” Heena asked the guard. “High Priest Raphael’s subordinates—have they noticed his absence?”
“Three senior priests have requested audiences to discuss urgent matters requiring his blessing. All denied by your office with explanations of spiritual retreat. They’re growing suspicious. One priest was overheard questioning whether such a prolonged absence is truly voluntary.”
“And General Lucian’s western border troops?”
“His second-in-command sent urgent dispatches regarding border movements that require the General’s immediate attention. When those messages went unanswered for three days, he traveled to the capital personally. He’s demanding an audience with Your Majesty tomorrow.”
