Chapter 74: Chapter-74
“Recorded, Your Majesty,” the secretary said, eyes shining as if she’d just composed poetry.
Heena eyed him. “Stop looking at me like that. You’re going to give me cavities.”
He coughed into his sleeve to hide a laugh.
’’’
### Evening: finally, silence
At last, as the sky faded from gold to violet, Heena dismissed the last attendant and closed her study door behind her.
Her chambers were dark and mercifully quiet.
She kicked off her boots one by one, let the heavy cape slide to the floor, and didn’t bother calling maids to undress her. She staggered to the bed and dropped face-first onto the mattress.
System 427 floated down, landing near her shoulder like a small, overcautious cat.
“Host?” he whispered.
She groaned into the pillow.
“For the record,” he said softly, “today you terrorized half the palace, broke three corruption arcs, rewrote imperial protocol, and scared a system-backed heroine and her father so badly their bloodline is going to have nightmares for weeks.”
Heena didn’t move.
“And,” he added, “you maybe saved a famine district and the future of this empire a little.”
She shifted just enough to breathe. “I also stole a gold mine and a diamond mine,” she mumbled.
“That was ’plot correction’,” the lion said firmly. “Absolutely necessary resource redistribution.”
A muffled huff caught in the blankets. It might have been a laugh.
Her eyes slid closed.
This time, no servant dared to knock. No one called “Your Majesty” from outside her door. The knights doubled patrols on their own initiative. The secretary started seizing Whitmore property like a man possessed.
For one full night, the palace held its breath.
And in the heart of it, the Black Lotus who had given up a vacation for this mess finally, ’finally’ slept.
Heena slept like a stone.
No dreams, no systems screaming, no knocks, no sudden “Your Majesty!” from the other side of the door. Just a long, heavy dark that her body sank into and refused to leave.
When she finally woke, it was because sunlight was stabbing directly into her face.
She squinted, rolled onto her back, and stared at the ceiling in confusion.
“…I’m alive?” she croaked.
System 427 floated down from somewhere near the canopy, mane mussed, eyes wide. “You slept ten hours, Host.”
Heena blinked. “You’re joking.”
“I wouldn’t dare,” he said fervently. “No one came. No one knocked. The knights doubled the perimeter on their own. The servants started whispering that waking you would shorten their lifespan by three generations.”
She lay there for a moment longer, then sighed.
“Status report,” she said.
System 427 ticked items off with his tail. “House Whitmore: fully demoted, mines seized, decree copied and distributed. Noble entry protocols: already circulating—half the capital is screaming in private. Southern famine district: your ’punished’ stewards left at dawn with emergency supplies. The knights: currently training like their souls are on the line.”
He hesitated.
“And Serafina?” Heena asked.
“Still in her room,” the lion said. “Her system is… quiet. Very quiet. Whatever she saw yesterday did something. The protagonist halo is still there, but it’s… constricted. Like it’s finally realized this world isn’t on easy mode anymore.”
Heena sat up slowly, rubbing her temples. The headache was duller now, more like a bruise than an open wound.
“Good,” she said. “Maybe with a little pressure, even a heroine can learn common sense.”
She swung her legs off the bed and stood, joints protesting.
“Another day?” System 427 asked carefully.
Heena stretched her arms over her head, spine popping, and gave a tired, wicked little smile.
“Another day,” she agreed. “If this empire wants a tyrant Empress…”
She glanced toward the window, where the palace roofs glittered under the sun.
“…then I may as well show them how efficient a tyrant can be.”
Heena did not rush to leave her room.
For a long moment after she finished dressing, she just stood by the door with her hand on the handle, listening.
Silence.
No frantic footsteps. No nervous voices. No “Your Majesty, emergency!” ringing down the corridor. The palace, for once, was quiet.
“Strange,” she murmured. “Did everyone die overnight?”
System 427 hovered above the wardrobe, tail flicking. “Host, after stripping a Marquis, seizing two mines, and sending a Knight Commander to the Nether Dungeons in one night, people decided they like living.” [1]
Heena snorted, then pulled the door open.
***
The corridor outside might as well have been a painting.
The two maids assigned to this wing were already waiting with their heads bowed, backs perfectly straight, dusters clasped in both hands like ceremonial offerings. The knight on patrol had timed his circuit so precisely that he was just turning the corner as she stepped out—far enough not to be in her way, close enough to drop instantly into a rigid bow.
No one breathed too loudly.
Heena leaned against the doorframe for a second, taking in the way their shoulders tightened even more at the sight of her.
“I went to sleep,” she said dryly, “not to war.”
The nearer maid made a tiny, strangled sound in the back of her throat.
System 427 drifted down to hover near her shoulder, eyes wide. “Host, you should’ve seen them this morning before you woke up. They were tiptoeing like the floor was made of landmines.” [1]
“Considering how yesterday went,” Heena said, “they aren’t entirely wrong.”
She pushed off the frame and started walking.
***
The palace had always been grand—high ceilings painted with scenes of past emperors, wide corridors lined with red pillars and gold-inlaid screens, polished stone floors that reflected light in soft gleams. Under Celeste, all that grandeur had felt… wasted. Like dressing a ghost in imperial robes.
Under Heena, it suddenly looked like what it was meant to be: a place people were *afraid* to take lightly.
Every servant she passed folded in on themselves.
A young eunuch carrying a tray of scrolls saw her at the end of the corridor and nearly tripped in his haste to bow, knuckles whitening on the tray as the scrolls wobbled dangerously close to the edge. He caught them at the last second, sweat breaking out across his forehead.
Heena’s gaze slid over him and moved on.
He exhaled like he’d just survived an assassination attempt.
Two older maids were quietly arguing over flower arrangements at an alcove. One glance at Heena approaching and both of them dropped so fast into curtsies that a petal fell from the vase and landed on the floor between them.
Heena walked past without comment, but System 427, trailing behind her like a nervous balloon, whispered, “You know, this is the first time in this world that ’the Empress is coming’ actually makes people *work better* instead of slack off.”
“Fear is a very efficient motivator,” Heena said. “Pity it’s such a hassle to maintain.”
A pair of junior clerks scurried out of a side door with armfuls of ledgers. They froze when they saw her, as if they’d materialized in front of a wild beast.
One of them dropped a book.
It hit the floor with a dull thump that sounded twice as loud in the tense corridor.
Heena glanced at the fallen ledger, at the boy’s shaking hands, then at his face.
His lips trembled. “Y-Your Majesty, I—I—”
“Pick it up,” she said mildly. “And don’t drop state property again. Paper is expensive. So are the hands that copied it.”
