Chapter 270: Chapter-270
Hearing that, Samuel took a step closer and said directly, “I’m asking about my proposal from yesterday. About you joining my household staff, working directly for me. It would be extremely beneficial for you—protection from my father’s wife, better food, less brutal labor.”
Hearing that, Heena paused in her clothes-hanging and looked at him with her head tilted slightly, as if genuinely confused.
“Joining you? But what would I actually GET from this arrangement, Master?”
Samuel looked slightly surprised by that blunt question. “I just told you—protection, better treatment, opportunities—”
“Temporary benefits,” Heena interrupted, looking at him directly now. “All of which you could revoke the moment I’m no longer useful to your schemes against the Mistress.”
She set down the wet shirt she’d been holding and turned to face him fully.
“You want me to become your personal servant, yes? To work in your study, manage your correspondence, handle your private affairs?”
“Yes, that’s—”
“And in exchange, you’ll protect me from Maya’s attacks and give me slightly better living conditions,” Heena continued. “But I’d still be a servant. Still at the absolute bottom of the household hierarchy. Still completely dependent on your goodwill.”
She smiled, but it wasn’t a pleasant smile.
“Master, with all due respect, that’s a terrible deal for me.”
Samuel’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What exactly are you suggesting?”
Heena picked up another wet garment and began hanging it calmly, as if they were discussing the weather.
“Well, I’ve been thinking about this quite carefully. And I realized something interesting: instead of joining YOUR team as a powerless servant, why wouldn’t I just join the old Master’s team instead?”
She glanced at Samuel to gauge his reaction.
“After all, if I became the Master’s concubine—which, let’s be honest, is clearly what he’s been working toward—I would have actual status in this household. I’d have my own quarters, my own servants, legal protection, and a position that couldn’t be easily taken away.”
Samuel’s expression had gone completely cold. “You cannot be serious.”
“Why not?” Heena asked, genuinely curious about his reaction. “From a purely strategic standpoint, becoming the old Master’s concubine gives me far more security and benefits than becoming your personal servant ever could.”
She continued her logical analysis: “Think about it rationally, Master. As your servant, I’d be completely dependent on you. But as the Master’s concubine, I’d have legal standing. I could even, theoretically, become his wife if circumstances aligned properly.”
She smiled at Samuel’s increasingly dark expression.
“In fact, if I play this correctly, I could become his legal wife and therefore your stepmother. So why should I worry about Maya’s schemes or your protection? I’d be the Mistress of this household, with all the power and authority that entails.”
Hearing that calculated proposal, Samuel looked at her with something like disbelief mixed with anger.
“You would seriously consider marrying my father? That disgusting old man who’s been inappropriately staring at you?”
“Disgusting or not, he has wealth and status,” Heena said with a shrug. “I’m a practical person, Master. Marriage to him would solve all my problems permanently. Marriage to you—well, you haven’t even offered that, have you? Just servitude.”
She met his eyes directly.
“So yes, from where I’m standing, becoming the old Master’s wife seems like a much better strategic move than becoming your employee.”
Samuel was quiet for a long moment, clearly struggling with how to respond to this unexpected argument.
Finally, he said, his voice tight with controlled emotion, “I didn’t think you would be like this. I thought you were different—smarter than the typical scheming servant girl trying to sleep her way to status.”
Heena laughed—a sharp, genuine laugh.
“Oh, Master, don’t try to guilt me with appeals to my pride or intelligence. You approached ME with a transactional offer. I’m simply negotiating the terms like any intelligent person would.”
She set down the laundry basket and turned to face him fully, her expression shifting from playful to deadly serious.
“Let’s stop playing games, Master. We’re both adults here. We both know exactly what we’re doing. So let’s have an honest conversation about what we each actually want and what we’re willing to trade for it.”
Hearing that direct challenge, Samuel was silent for a moment.
Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face—a real smile, one that reached his eyes with something like respect.
“Fine,” he said. “What do you want, Seera? Name your price.”
Heena didn’t hesitate. She’d been planning this response since the moment he first approached her.
“I want to become your wife. Your legal wife, not a concubine. Not a mistress. Your equal partner with all the legal rights and protections that status provides.”
The words hung in the air between them.
Samuel’s expression froze in complete shock.
Whatever he’d been expecting her to demand—money, freedom, protection, property—it clearly hadn’t been THIS.
He stared at her for several long seconds, his mouth slightly open, clearly trying to process what she’d just said.
Finally, he found his voice: “You… you want to MARRY me?”
“Yes,” Heena said calmly. “Legal marriage. Proper ceremony. Official documentation. The whole traditional arrangement.”
Samuel shook his head slowly, still looking stunned. “Do you have any idea what you’re asking? Do you understand the implications of what you’re suggesting?”
“Of course I do,” Heena said. “Do you?”
“You’re a SERVANT,” Samuel said, his voice rising slightly despite his usual control. “The lowest rank in this household. I’m the eldest son of a wealthy merchant family. The social gap between us is—”
“Irrelevant,” Heena interrupted. “Because you need me more than you want to admit.”
She took a step closer to him.
“You need someone intelligent and ruthless who can help you navigate the political situation in this household. You need someone who isn’t connected to your father’s allies or your stepmother’s faction. You need someone who can act independently and make difficult decisions.”
She smiled.
“And most importantly, you need someone who isn’t afraid of you—someone who will tell you the truth and challenge your assumptions when necessary.”
She gestured at herself.
“I’m offering you all of that. But not as a servant you can dismiss when convenient. As a partner. An equal. A wife who has just as much invested in your success as you do.”
Samuel was shaking his head, but she could see he was actually considering it—running through the calculations in his mind.
“The scandal would be enormous,” he said. “A young master marrying a servant? My father would be furious. The household would be in chaos. Your reputation—”
“My reputation?” Heena laughed. “Master, I’m already a servant accused of trying to seduce your father and allegedly stealing fish. My reputation cannot possibly get worse. But YOUR reputation—as someone who sees value and potential regardless of social class, who makes bold decisions, who doesn’t bow to conventional pressure—that would actually improve.”
She could see him wavering.
“Think about it practically,” she continued. “If you marry me, you immediately neutralize your father’s inappropriate interest. You remove me from Maya’s reach completely—she can’t touch me if I’m your legal wife. You gain a partner who’s already demonstrated intelligence, resourcefulness, and the ability to handle difficult situations.”
She ticked off points on her fingers.
