Mariana stood in the doorway wrapped in the pale covering from her bed, her pink hair loose and slightly tangled, her eyes red-rimmed in the way that two days of crying produces, swollen at the edges and achingly honest.

She looked at him sitting on the floor against the wall with his robe pulled around him,

“You have been out here this whole time?” she said.

She stepped back from the doorway and held it open wider, not looking at him directly, her eyes somewhere around his shoulder.

“Come inside then,” she said quietly. “Let’s hear the execuses you made.”

He got up from the floor, slowly, his cold joints voicing their opinion about two nights on stone, and walked through the doorway.

She closed the door behind him.

The room was warm and dim and smelled faintly of the climbing plants outside the window.

She sat on the edge of the bed and pulled the covering around her shoulders and looked at her hands in her lap for a long while.

Adonis sat in the corner of the room, looking at her red face from crying.

He began speaking honestly.

She stared back, curious to hear him out.

She pulled back just enough to look up at him properly,

“If I am to be your wife,” she said carefully, “your true wife, the first among them, then I have conditions.”

Adonis looked at her with genuine attention. “Speak them.”

She held up one finger. “You will never make me feel like I am less. Not by word, not by action, not by the way you look at someone else when you think I am not watching.”

“Agreed,” he said.
