Chapter 211: MIDNIGHT APPROACH
Adam’s heart hammered against his ribs. His throat went dry.
’Damn… since when did Ignis become this beautiful…?’
The firelight caught the soft curve of her jaw, the warmth in her eyes, the way her flames flickered not with aggression but with something softer—something that made his chest ache.
They stared at each other. The moment stretched.
Then—
“What are you two planning to do?”
Lilith’s voice sliced through the tension like a blade. Adam and Ignis jolted apart, heads snapping toward the sound. Lilith stood a few paces away, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised. Behind her, Isolde lingered at the edge of the treeline, still drying her hair with a cloth.
“N-Nothing!” Adam’s voice came out too fast. “We were just talking!”
Ignis nodded vigorously, her flames flaring with embarrassment. “Yeah! Just talking! Normal talking!”
Lilith’s crimson eyes narrowed. She didn’t look convinced. But she said nothing—only hummed, low and knowing, before stepping aside.
Adam’s gaze drifted past her, toward the vampire who had just emerged from the shadows.
Isolde wore the gown Lilith had given her—dark fabric that flowed like water, catching the firelight in silver ripples. It clung to her slender frame, accentuating curves she usually hid beneath layers of travel-worn clothing. Her white hair, still damp, fell in soft waves around her pale face.
Adam blinked.
’Huh… she looks… sweet.’
The word surprised him. He had expected elegant, perhaps. Regal. But sweet? The gown softened her sharp edges, made her look less like a creature of vengeance and more like… a girl.
Isolde’s pale blue eyes widened. Her cheeks, usually so pale, flushed faintly.
“What… are you looking at?” Her voice was sharp, defensive, but there was a tremor beneath it.
Adam tilted his head, studying her. The firelight painted gold across her features.
“Hmm.” He nodded slowly. “Good. It fits you perfectly.” A faint smile tugged at his lips. “Turns out it wasn’t a waste to keep so many clothes.”
Isolde’s flush deepened. She looked away, clutching the edge of her sleeve.
“Y-You’re weird,” she muttered.
Ignis crossed her arms, pouting. “Hey, Adam. You never complimented me like that.”
Adam glanced at her. “I compliment you all the time.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I do.”
“When?”
“Just now.”
“That doesn’t count!”
Lilith drifted closer to Adam, her shoulder brushing his. Her voice was soft, meant only for him.
“You have a type, don’t you?” she murmured.
Adam’s eye twitched. “I don’t have a type.”
Lilith’s smile didn’t waver. “Of course not.”
Ignis crossed her arms, her flames flickering with mock indignation. “Adam doesn’t have a type. He likes all women.”
Adam shot her a look. “Don’t say that, Ignis. I just see what I think suits them. That’s all.”
Lilith tilted her head, her crimson eyes gleaming. “Oh? Then what about me, Adam? Do I suit you?”
Adam met her gaze for a moment. His cheeks flushed slightly. He looked away, crossing his arms tightly over his chest as if to physically contain his fluster.
“…Yeah. You do.” He cleared his throat and shifted his weight from one foot to the other, suddenly finding the campfire very interesting. “Alright, enough of this. Let’s just go back and rest.”
He stood up quickly and walked off toward the campfire, his steps a little too fast.
Lilith’s smile widened. “Hehe.”
Ignis scrambled to her feet and chased after Adam, grabbing at his sleeve.
“Hey! Only Lilith? What about me, Adam?!”
Adam kept walking, his face still red. “You too! Now let go of my sleeve.”
Ignis didn’t let go. She tugged harder, her voice rising with insistence.
“Then say it properly! Say I suit you too!”
Adam sighed, finally stopping. He turned to look at her bright, earnest eyes, at the flames that danced around her shoulders like a living cloak.
“You suit me too,” he said quietly. “Happy?”
Ignis’s face lit up. She released his sleeve, bouncing on her heels.
“Yeah!”
Isolde watched the exchange from a few paces away, her pale blue eyes wide with disbelief. Her lips parted, then closed. She shook her head slowly.
“What… is this nonsense?” she muttered under her breath. Then she turned and walked stiffly toward the campfire, her new gown brushing against the grass.
Adam reached the campsite first and settled onto a log near the fire. He gestured to the others.
“Alright. We need to rest. Tomorrow’s going to be a long day.”
Isolde nodded immediately, her exhaustion evident in the way her shoulders sagged. “Finally. Something sensible.” She found a patch of soft grass near the fire and lay down without ceremony, her back to the flames. Within moments, her breathing slowed. She was either asleep or pretending very convincingly.
Ignis stretched her arms above her head, her flames dimming to a warm, comfortable glow. “Yeah, I’m pretty tired too. And I need to save my energy for flying.” She glanced at Adam. “Wake me when it’s time to go.”
She curled up near the fire, her body radiating heat like a living blanket, and closed her eyes.
Lilith drifted toward Adam, her movements fluid and deliberate. She didn’t sit. Instead, she stood close, her crimson eyes fixed on his face.
“I’ll sleep too,” she said softly. Then she leaned in, her lips brushing his ear. “But don’t think I’ve forgotten our conversation.”
Adam’s jaw tightened. He caught her wrist gently before she could pull away.
“What are you planning, Lilith?”
Her smile widened. “Nothing you need to worry about. Yet.”
She slipped from his grasp and glided to a shadowed spot beneath a large tree, settling into the darkness like she belonged there. Her eyes, still visible in the gloom, remained fixed on Adam for a long moment before finally closing.
Adam sat alone by the fire.
The night was quiet now—just the crackle of flames, the soft whisper of wind through the trees, and the distant call of an owl.
Adam let out a slow breath. He hadn’t realized how tightly wound he’d been until the silence settled around him.
’Finally. Some peace.’
He stared into the fire for a while, letting his thoughts drift. Then he remembered.
’The shop. I haven’t checked it in ages.’
He closed his eyes and summoned the system interface. The familiar translucent screen materialized before him, glowing faintly in the darkness.
[System Shop]
[Skill Points Available: 10]
His eyebrows rose slightly. “Ten points… I’ve been saving for a while.”
Adam scrolled through the shop interface, his crimson eyes flickering over the list of available skills. Most of them were… underwhelming.
Minor Fire Resistance. Slight Mana Boost. Basic Evasion.
“Hmm.” He shook his head slightly. “Seems like I don’t really need any of this.”
His offensive and defensive skills were already extensive. His movement skills were still strong enough for what he faced. The consumables were tempting, but not urgent. He had enough for now.
’Maybe I’ll save these points for when I really need them.’
He was about to close the interface when a familiar entry caught his eye.
[Fluid Kinetics: 0.5/1.0 (Fragment)]
Origin: Gibbering Abyssal Kraken (Dungeon Lord)
Effect (Incomplete): Grants limited control over liquid environments, allowing the user to move through water and similar fluids with reduced resistance.
Adam’s eyebrows rose slightly. “Hmm. I’m curious about this skill…”
He stared at the incomplete fragment, his mind churning.
’If I complete it… maybe I could combine it with my Mirage Cascade. Fluid movement through air and water? That could be interesting.’
He tapped his finger against his knee, thinking.
’It’s worth a try. I’ll look for monsters with this type of skill if I get the chance.’
He dismissed the shop interface and leaned back, staring up at the stars through the canopy.
’Tomorrow… we head for Kaelthar. The journey will be even longer.’
He exhaled slowly, his hand drifting to his chest where Alice’s presence rested within his soul.
’But I can feel it. Where you’ll finally heal, Alice.’
He closed his eyes, letting the quiet settle around him.
Then he felt it.
A shift in the air. A warmth that wasn’t from the fire. Softness pressing against his thighs—someone straddling him.
His eyes snapped open.
Lilith.
She sat atop him, her pale hair loose, spilling over her shoulders like moonlight. Her gown—the same dark fabric she always wore had slipped slightly, revealing the curve of her collarbone. The firelight painted gold across her features, softening the sharp edges of her beauty.
She smelled of night-blooming flowers and something deeper. Something that made Adam’s breath catch.
“Lilith—” he started.
She pressed a finger to his lips.
“Shhh.” Her voice was barely a whisper, warm against his skin. “Don’t be too loud, Adam.”
Her crimson eyes gleamed in the darkness—patient, knowing, and utterly without shame.
Adam’s heart hammered against his ribs. His hands hovered awkwardly at his sides.
“What are you—”
“I told you,” she murmured, leaning closer. Her hair brushed his cheeks, soft as silk. “Our conversation isn’t over.”
Adam swallowed. His throat was dry.
“Everyone’s asleep,” he managed.
Lilith’s smile widened. “Exactly.”
Her finger traced down from his lips, along his jaw, his neck, coming to rest against his collarbone.
“So we won’t be disturbed.”
