Chapter 72: Let’s Stir up Trouble
Lilith’s graceful form shifted as she contemplated, her psychic voice thoughtful. «It is… unusual. A Dungeon Lord of such described power would not carelessly abandon its clutch. Unless it was driven away, or lured by greater prey. Or perhaps… it considered the eggs themselves a secondary concern.»
“That’s not a comforting thought,” Adam replied, the scales along his back tightening slightly. “But you’re right. We can’t assume anything. If this white serpent is anything like the Arachnowyrm or worse, more intelligent—then it’s not just a monster. It’s a bitch. We need to be even more cautious.”
Alice, who had been quietly listening while nuzzling against Adam’s side, lifted her head. «There is another puzzle. How did this ’human,’ being hunted by such a creature, end up here, in the web-larder of a different Dungeon Lord? Did he escape the serpent only to fall to the spider? Or was he… deliberately herded here?»
The question hung in the air, heavy and chilling. They all fell silent, turning the possibilities over in their minds. None had a clear answer.
“It could be coincidence. The dungeon is a maze. He could have stumbled here, wounded and desperate,” Adam mused, but even he didn’t sound convinced. “Or maybe the spider caught his scent and dragged him here after the serpent wounded him. Or… maybe the serpent let him go, knowing exactly where he’d run. To start a conflict, or as a twisted gift to a rival.” He shook his massive head, the feathered wings rustling. “We don’t have enough information. But the diary gives us a warning. There’s at least one other apex predator out there, possibly rivaling or exceeding the Arachnowyrm. And it might be… connected to me.”
He looked at the diary, then at the cavern—a nexus of two Dungeon Lords’ territories. “It also answers a question I’ve since we started exploring. Why are there so many apex predators in such a relatively confined space? The Arachnowyrm, this White Serpent, the Magma Lord we defeated, the Obsidian Coil… This dungeon isn’t just dense with mana. It’s a crucible. It forces constant conflict, evolution through battle. The strong don’t just survive here; they’re forged into lords through endless competition. And the strongest of all…” He trailed off, the implication clear.
«Then our path remains the same, but our eyes must be wider,» Lilith concluded, her elegant tone serious now. «We have to be careful because we are still monsters who are not strong enough.»
“Agreed,” Adam said, his galactic eyes hardening with determination. “We can’t stay here, the battle and the Hexsadder’s attack will have drawn attention. We move. We find a secure location to rest, fully recover, and we will go to our next destination to retrieve the delayed treasure”
He nudged the diary towards Alice. “Store this. It’s more valuable than gold right now.” As Alice made it vanish into her Void Locker, Adam coiled his powerful body, ready to lead.
The trek back through the familiar, purple-lit tunnels of the Violet Abyss was swift. Adam’s new form moved with a powerful grace, his feathered wings tucked close. The others followed—Alice a shadow at his side, Ignis a bouncing ball of excited flame, and Lilith a silent, elegant specter in the rear.
They stood at the rocky shore, the violet bioluminescence from the ceiling casting shimmering reflections on the dark water.
The “Many-Armed Darkness” awaited below.
Then Adam, who had focused his gaze on the water, said, “I will dive myself and take the treasure, you guys just wait here.”
«Are you certain about going into the water alone?» Alice’s mental voice was taut with concern, cutting through the quiet. She butted her head against his shoulder. «That’s reckless. It’s not like you. Are you… worried about that white serpent?»
Lilith skittered forward, her multiple eyes reflecting the eerie light. «She is correct, albeit blunt. A direct aquatic assault against an unknown Dungeon Lord in its own element is statistically unfavorable. We should formulate a prepared stratagem, not charge in ’leisurely.’»
Adam flexed his powerful coils, feeling the immense strength thrumming within his Eclipse Dragon Serpent body. “I’m confident. This upgrade wasn’t just for show. My size, strength, and the Pressurized Spines skill are perfect for underwater combat. I can move freely down there.”
«Confidence is a catalyst for stupidity when it’s not backed by intel,» Alice retorted, her tail lashing. «We don’t know what that thing is. It could be a psychic leviathan, a poison hydra, or a swarm of smaller things. Going in blind is a mistake.»
«A compromise, then,» Lilith interjected, her voice a calm, logical thread in the tension. «Lure it out. Bait the guardian to the shallows or the shore. Remove its home-field advantage. Then, we assist. A coordinated attack on land favors our combined abilities.»
«Yeah! I can’t burn it underwater!» Ignis chimed in, nodding vigorously. «But on land, I can roast it super good! Let’s poke it until it comes out to play!»
Adam looked at their determined faces, they are worried about him. He couldn’t just dismiss them. He let out a slow breath, mist curling from his nostrils.
“You’re right. About the recklessness. And about the intel.” He conceded, the words feeling strange but necessary. “Pulling it out is smarter. But a Dungeon Lord with a title like ’Many-Armed Darkness’… it won’t be easily fooled by simple bait. It might not leave its treasure unguarded for a obvious lure.”
«Then we must be creative with our provocation,» Lilith purred. «Something it cannot ignore. An insult to its domain.»
«Or a threat to its treasure,» Alice added, her eyes glinting. «We don’t have to go to the treasure. We can make it think the treasure is being taken from up here.»
“Alright. We try the lure first,” Adam decided. “But we do it my way. Ignis, you’re our ’insult.’ Lilith, you’re our net. Alice, you’re our safety line. And I’ll be the big, tempting serpent in the water… but only up to my neck.”
“Let’s go fishing for a Dungeon Lord.”
