Chapter 41: Stonewarden Golem Treasure
Chapter 41: Stonewarden Golem Treasure
The tension from the wolf battle began to fade as they moved deeper into the silent, winding tunnels. Adam was about to choose a path at a fork when Alice, perched on his head, suddenly went rigid.
’Stop,’ her thought was a sharp, urgent whisper in his mind. ’There is a… pull. From the left tunnel. It feels… dense.’
Adam immediately halted, trusting her instincts implicitly. Her void-attuned senses often picked up things his own could not. “What do you feel? Danger? Treasure?”
’Both,’ she replied after a moment. ’The mana there is thick and calm, like sleeping stone. But it guards something… sweet.’
“A resource guarded by monsters,” Adam concluded. “Show us the way, Alice. Lead on.”
With Alice guiding them, they took the left tunnel. The air grew cooler, and the walls began to change. The rough-hewn rock gave way to smooth, crystalline formations, and soon, the entire cavern was illuminated by clusters of softly glowing stones embedded in the walls and ceiling, giving the place an ethereal, starlit beauty.
In the center of this vast, beautiful cavern lay a small, spring-fed pond. And around its banks grew several plants that made Adam’s instincts sing. They were small, unassuming shrubs, but they bore fruits that shimmered with a liquid, silvery light, radiating a pure, potent life force.
But between them and the pond stood the guardians.
There were three of them, constructed not of flesh and blood, but of the very glowing rock that lit the cavern. They were humanoid in shape but bulky and ponderous, with crystals for eyes that pulsed in time with the light around them. They stood perfectly still, looking like part of the scenery, but Adam could feel the latent power within them.
[Stonewarden Golem]
’They haven’t noticed us yet,’ Adam projected. ’They’re dormant unless we get too close to the plants.’
’Can I burn them?’ Ignis asked eagerly, her new Sun Lance skill itching for a test.
’No, Ignis,’ Adam thought back, his mind racing. ’Their bodies are stone, likely highly resistant to fire. A direct assault is too risky. We need a new strategy.’
He observed the area. The golems were slow but undoubtedly powerful. A direct fight would be a brutal slog. But Alice’s void powers…
’Alice, your Void Bind. Can it hold stone?’
’It holds anything that exists,’ she replied with supreme confidence. ’But they are heavy. It will not last long.’
“That’s all we need,” Adam whispered aloud. “A moment of distraction. Here’s the plan. Alice, you bind the one on the far right. Ignis, the moment it’s trapped, you hit the one on the left with your Solar Flare not to damage it, but to blind its crystal eyes and draw its attention. I will use Phantom Onslaught to get past them and grab as many of those fruits as I can. We take the prize and retreat.”
The plan started flawlessly. At Adam’s mental signal, Alice vanished. She reappeared near the rightmost Golem, and tendrils of absolute darkness erupted from the ground, coiling around its legs and torso. Void Bind held fast, the stone grinding against the unnatural force.
Simultaneously, Ignis unleashed her Solar Flare. The sphere of blinding light detonated right in the face of the left Golem. As predicted, it didn’t scorch the stone, but the creature recoiled, its glowing crystal eyes dimming momentarily as it was disoriented.
Seizing the opening, Adam activated Phantom Onslaught. His massive form became a blur, teleporting in three rapid, silent dashes that carried him past the central Golem and right to the edge of the shimmering pond. He moved with breathtaking speed, his maw opening to carefully pluck two of the glowing, silvery fruits, storing them in a secure spot.
But as he turned to retreat, the cavern itself groaned.
The central Golem, which had seemed dormant, slammed its stone fists into the ground. Not in an attack, but in a command. A deep, resonant pulse of earth mana shot out from it. The tunnel they had entered through, their only known exit, shuddered and collapsed as massive slabs of rock slammed down, sealing it completely. The glowing stones on the walls flared brightly, and the very floor began to shift, new stone spikes erupting around them.
’I should have known it wouldn’t be that easy!’ Adam cursed, his initial plan in ashes. Theft was no longer an option. It was a fight for survival.
The rightmost Golem finally shattered Alice’s Void Bind with a raw surge of power, and the left one shook off its disorientation. All three Stonewarden Golems now turned their crystalline gaze upon the intruders, their movements slow but inexorable, the very earth their weapon.
“New plan! We break them!” Adam roared. “Ignis, keep the left one distracted! Alice, support her and look for openings! I’ll handle the big one!”
He focused on the central Golem, the obvious leader. It raised a fist, and a spike of stone shot from the ground towards him. Adam coiled and launched himself skyward with a powerful beat of his wings, evading the attack. From the air, he retaliated. Ember Shard Shot! The superheated obsidian shard slammed into the Golem’s shoulder with a sharp crack, chipping off a sizable piece of rock and leaving a glowing, molten scar. It was effective, but not enough.
The Golem responded by causing the ceiling above Adam to rain down sharp fragments. He weaved through the barrage, his Aerial Dominance allowing him to navigate the deadly hail with flawless precision.
On the ground, Ignis used her Cinder Dash to stay mobile, zipping around the left Golem. Her fire was ineffective, but her movement was a perfect distraction. Alice used Void Step to appear on the Golem’s back, her claws scraping futilely at the stone before teleporting away as a stone fist nearly crushed her.
Adam knew he needed more power. He needed to shatter their formation. Landing with a heavy thud, he channeled his mana, focusing it through his tail and into the ground. Earthshaker!
The shockwave erupted beneath the central and rightmost Golems. The ground trembled violently, and the force, amplified by the resonant crystalline cavern, was magnified. The Golems staggered, their feet cracking the floor as they fought for balance. For a moment, their control over the earth wavered.
This was the opening.
“Now, Ignis! The one on the right!” Adam commanded.
Ignis understood. She broke away from her own opponent and, taking a deep breath, unleashed her newest and most powerful skill. Sun Lance! The concentrated beam of solar energy, designed to pierce, lanced across the cavern. It struck the already off-balance right Golem directly in its crystal core. There was a sound of shattering quartz, and the light in the Golem’s eyes died as a web of cracks spread across its chest. It froze, then crumbled into a pile of inert rock.
The balance of power had shifted.
Enraged, the central Golem charged Adam, its fists raised high. This time, Adam didn’t dodge. He met the charge head-on, his powerful body coiling around the creature’s leg. He activated Constrict, his immense Strength of 48 grinding against the stone. At the same time, he breathed a continuous stream of Fire Breath directly into its torso, not to burn it, but to superheat the rock.
The stone began to glow red. The Golem thrashed, trying to punch him, but Adam held fast. With a final, brutal squeeze, he heard a deep, internal SNAP. The Golem’s leg shattered at the knee. It toppled forward, and Adam released it, delivering a final, crushing blow with his tail to its head, silencing it forever.
The remaining Golem, now outnumbered, was quickly overwhelmed by a combined assault from Alice’s void skills and Ignis’s Sun Lance.
Silence returned to the cavern, now scarred and littered with rubble. Adam panted, looking at the sealed exit. They were trapped, but they were alive and victorious.
As the last Golem fell, Adam ate the core of the golem and it felt hard but it seemed like his teeth were strong enough to chew it and suddenly a panel appeared.
[ Skill Fragment Acquired: Stoneheart Fragment (1.0/1.0) ]
[ New Skill Acquired: Earthen Armor (Active) – Cost: High Mana ]
Effect:Temporarily encases you in a shell of fortified stone, significantly increasing physical defense at the cost of mobility.
A powerful new defensive skill. It would be crucial for the battles to come. He turned to his companions, a new problem already forming in his mind: how to get out.
“Well,” he mused, looking at the wall of stone blocking their path. “That could have gone smoother.”
’The big one talks too much,’ Alice quipped, flicking her tail towards the fallen central Golem.
’What do we do now?’ Ignis asked, her draconic eyes scanning the sealed exit.
Adam coiled, his obsidian scales scraping against the stone floor. “Now,” he said, a glint of challenge in his eyes. “We dig. Or we find another way. The dungeon isn’t done with us yet.”
