Chapter 48: The Pale Weaver
’We’re going to crash right into her!’ the white spider screamed telepathically as Adam charged headlong down the silken corridor, the Arachnowyrm’s colossal form filling the tunnel ahead.
“Hold TIGHT!” Adam roared back.
Just as a massive, spear-like leg stabbed down to impale them, Adam activated Phantom Onslaught. His form blurred, teleporting them a few crucial meters forward and to the side, the leg slamming into the empty space they had just occupied. He didn’t stop, he used the momentum, coiling and pushing off the wall to slide under the Arachnowyrm’s bulk as it turned with shocking speed. The air whistled as another leg scythed past, missing his head by inches.
The sudden, violent maneuver was too much for the white spider’s fragile grip. It lost its hold, tumbling from his back with a psychic cry of terror, landing directly in the path of the Arachnowyrm’s following step.
“Damn it!” Adam snarled. Without a second thought, he reversed his course. Ignoring the imminent danger, he lunged, his body a black streak. He wrapped his coils around the white spider and used Abyssal Glide to shoot sideways, the Arachnowyrm’s leg crushing the spot where it had lain a heartbeat later. The shockwave from the impact threw them both against the wall.
Panting, Adam uncoiled. ’Are you okay?’
’I… I almost died…’ the spider stammered, its mind-voice faint with shock.
“No time for that. We’re not safe yet!”
Somehow, through a combination of sheer reckless speed, his teleportation skill, and the Arachnowyrm’s own immense size working against it in the tighter confines of its nest, Adam found an opening. He burst out of the web-lined tunnels and back into the main battle cavern.
The scene had changed. The Creeper Queen was gone. A massive, newly dug tunnel gaped in the far wall, surrounded by the mangled corpses of countless smaller spiders and creepers. The air was thick with the smell of acid and spider blood.
It fled, Adam realized with a surge of triumph. The Queen couldn’t win, but it could retreat. It’s wounded.
’I can use that later.’
But his victory was short-lived. A psychic shriek of pure, unadulterated fury erupted from the nest behind him. The Arachnowyrm emerged, its body scorched and dripping with acidic wounds from the Queen, but its rage was entirely focused on him. He had trespassed, stolen its sacrifice, and desecrated its home. Its multiple eyes burned with the promise of a slow, agonizing death.
’Last time, I escaped by the skin of my teeth and lost my tail,’ Adam thought, his wings beating powerfully as he gained altitude. ’This time, I’m stronger, faster, and I can fly. I can do this again.’
He saw his chance—a high, narrow opening in the cavern ceiling, likely an old ventilation shaft. Putting on a final burst of speed, he shot towards it like a bolt of black lightning. He glanced back only once, to see the Arachnowyrm scrambling up the cavern wall after him, its rage shaking the very dungeon.
But it was too late. Adam slipped into the narrow shaft, the enraged screams of the spider-god fading behind him as he navigated the tight, dark passage, his new companion clinging to his back for dear life.
He had done it. He had survived the Arachnowyrm’s lair twice. And this time, he hadn’t left empty-handed. He had gained a potential key to its defeat.
Adam didn’t stop until the enraged psychic screams of the Arachnowyrm were a distant, faint echo. He found a small, isolated cavern off the main tunnel, one that smelled only of dust and dry stone. He slithered in, his body aching from the relentless chase, and carefully lowered his body, allowing the white spider to disembark.
For a moment, they just sat in silence, the only sound their ragged breathing. The white spider was the first to speak, its telepathic voice steadier now, filled with a profound, trembling gratitude.
’Thank you,’ it whispered. ’You saved me. I was… I was ready to be consumed.’
“Don’t mention it,” Adam replied, his voice a tired rumble. He lifted his head, his amber eyes sharpening. “But my motives weren’t entirely selfless. I need information. I need to know everything about the Big Mother. Her weaknesses, her patterns, everything.”
The spider’s delicate legs shifted, a gesture akin to a nod. ’I will help you. I hate her. She saw my difference not as a curiosity, but as a flaw. A stain on her perfect brood. She intended to devour me to purify the bloodline.’ It paused, and a new, determined edge entered its thoughts. ’And she seems to see you as a threat and recognizes your potential.’
Adam’s eyes narrowed. “That makes sense. It explains why she’s so relentlessly focused on me.” He then cocked his head, a thought occurring to him. “Wait. You’re remarkably articulate. The other spiders I’ve encountered only have basic instincts. How is that possible?”
’She taught me,’ the spider answered, a complex mix of resentment and something resembling awe in its tone. ’Unintentionally. Her psychic presence is so powerful, her thoughts so complex. By being near her, listening to the echoes of her mind in the hive… I learned. I developed beyond what a brood-spider should be. That is another reason I am an aberration.’
A slow, understanding smile spread across Adam’s serpentine features. “Heh. So she accidentally created her own downfall. I like the irony.” He truly did. It confirmed his belief that the Arachnowyrm was a thinking, calculating foe, not just a beast. And that made it all the more satisfying to target.
’The bond,’ the spider prompted, its blue eyes fixed on him. ’It is time. To solidify our pact. Give me my True Name. The one I will carry as your companion.’
Adam looked at the creature. Its pristine white form, so bizzare and beautiful amidst the dungeon’s grimness. It was a being cast out for its intelligence, its uniqueness. A creature of the web, yet now an enemy of the Weaver. A name came to him, from the depths of his human memories, fitting for such a figure.
“Lilith,” he said, the name echoing with finality in the quiet cavern. “Your name is Lilith.”
A shiver ran through the white spider’s body. It seemed to stand taller, its presence solidifying. ’Lilith…’ it repeated, tasting the name. ’Yes. It is fitting. I accept.’
A new, delicate thread of connection snapped into place within Adam’s mind, subtler than his bond with Alice but unmistakably there. A system notification appeared.
[ New Companion Bond Formed! ]

Adam focused, and Lilith’s status panel materialized in his vision.
