“Because none of them are as stupid as you…” A low, hoarse voice echoed, cutting through Lana’s voice, and Mr. Crow, who, God knows when, was sitting on the windowsill, commented.

A proud glint flashed in his eyes and he thought in his mind while blocking Lana’s access to his inner thoughts,

Lana’s lips pursed into a thin line while she took an exasperated sigh. “Hey, shut up, alright? I have made my first talis…ah… why is the world… spinning?”

Her pale skin glistened under the sunlight, yet the scorching, angry red mark on her hand looked glaring and out of place.

“You are awake? How are you now?” Hearing the familiar hoarse voice, Lana’s head was whipped in the direction of Mr. Crow, who was lying on the bed, and she froze.

“I…” Lana began; her mind was flooded with the last memory she had, and a warm current shot through her heart.

Does she need to know why Mr. Crow and she were in bed?

Clearly, he was worried about her health, as he placed her on the bed and was deeply concerned for her well-being.

’He… he is not as bad as he seems.’ Her eyes reflected her inner thoughts, but her steady and calm voice cut through the air.

“I am good now.”

Seeing the worry melting in Mr. Crow’s eyes, Lana’s lips curved in a smile, and just as she was about to tease him, she saw a glint in Mr. Crow’s eyes, and he flew toward her.

“Good! Now I can teach you a good lesson then!”

“What…” was all Lana could speak before she sensed the danger, and her body, reacting on instinct, moved with the speed of a flash.

She slid out of her bed and started to run around the room.

“Hey! Mr. Crow! Calm down! Why are you furious?”

Mr. Crow’s teeth were clenched, while resentment flashed in his eyes.

“Do you know how worried I was? My soul almost left my body when I saw you faint! Can’t you once control the chaotic impulse inside your heart threatening to seep out any next second?”

“I didn’t do anything!” Lana yelled while dodging Mr. Crow’s claw attack. She regretted her inner thought.

’Stupid! How is he any good? He is clearly a miniature form of trouble!’

“Mr. Crow, stop! Have you ever seen a contracted beast beat their master?” Lana’s voice sounded a bit choked.

“Those masters never put their lives in peril and almost threaten their own life force!” Mr. Crow continued with his claw attack with precision.

“What?” Lana froze, her heart skipping a beat as worry flashed in her eyes.

Mr. Crow halted when he saw the astonishment in Lana’s eyes; his shoulders slumped as he sighed.

“You… you are truly… Someday you will die and still be unaware of the reason. Yesterday you fainted because of overexertion. If you had continued even a second longer, your life span would have been reduced by 3 months!”

All the cheerfulness and playfulness slowly vanished from Lana’s face and a she winced.

“Is it that serious?”

“Very serious,” Mr. Crow emphasized. “You had run out of mystic energy long ago and were using your life force to make talismans. Thanks to my fast thinking that I injected my energy, otherwise…”

Lana pursed her lips, while a chill shot through her spine. Knowing how dangerous the situation might have become if not for Mr. Crow’s interruption, a rare trace of guilt appeared in her eyes.

“Thank you.” There was genuine sincerity in her tone, and Lana’s heart was touched.

Recalling the furious expression of Mr. Crow, laughter and warmth bubbled in Lana’s chest. Her eyes softened while her lip curved into a deep smile, indicating her good mood.

“I will treat you to nice food!”

“Forget! Just stay out of danger; that will be the biggest gift from your end.” Mr. Crow waved his left wing in a very human-like manner; his shiny black feathers glittered under the sunlight.

Lana’s smile widened. The warmth pulsing through her skin, crawling toward her heart, made her see Mr. Crow in a new light.

Mr. Crow sensed Lana’s emotion and froze; his wings were still flapping, creating a small gust of wind; however, his heart skipped a beat.
