Chapter 54: Walking Home With Dinosaurs!!

Thadric was dragging two dinosaur-horse things through the forest path and somehow that wasn’t the weirdest part of the walk home.

The weirdest part was the silence. Four rookies who couldn’t shut up an hour ago now walked like ghosts. Nimbo still had his shield raised, poor soul had a problem with his fingers and even Emily couldn’t fix it completely. She said it was psychological. He was probably still in shock.

Mel kept touching her dagger but she sometimes showed some weird faces toward Eren or to forest, so Eren didn’t have any worries for the girl. She looked tougher than her brother.

Rabbu-i hadn’t said a single word since the kobold bodies hit the ground. She showed some emotions with her body or head movements but that was all. Eren guessed she didn’t want to show any embarrassing image to him and hiding her worries.

Only Thadric made noise because the mounts kept pulling him sideways. He had one rope in each hand and every few steps one of them tried to eat a bush or lunge at a squirrel or whatever the Evon equivalent of a squirrel was.

“Stop it. STOP. The bush isn’t food. You just ate a kobold saddle twenty minutes ago.” Thadric was secretly happy and couldn’t hide his smile but always complained about two new dinosaurs. Eren and Emily or even other ghost-like rookies didn’t buy his complains. This rancher was excited!

The bigger mount hissed at him. The smaller one was weirdly calm and just followed along like a dog on a leash.

Emily walked three steps ahead of everyone. Her katana was sheathed but her hand never left the grip. Eren matched her pace and carried two kobold crossbows on his shoulder plus a bag of iron bolts. The two scimitars hung from his belt by their sheaths.

He looked like someone cosplaying a fantasy character and doing a terrible job at it. A two-meter tall half-elf in a ripped ugly shirt carrying looted Kobold weapons through a magical forest.

If anyone from Earth saw him right now they’d think it was a really shitty movie.

The village didn’t have a proper gate. Just two carved wooden posts marking where the main path opened into the central clearing. Eren had walked past them dozens of times without thinking. But today felt different for some reason. This was the first day he was coming back as a partly-elf. He was a half-elf now.

Oldir was the first person they saw. He sat on a low stone wall near the path entrance with a leaf cigarette in his hand. He looked like he’d been sitting there for a while.

His eyes went straight to the mounts.

Then to the kobold weapons on Eren’s belt.

Then to Eren’s face. He held the look for about three seconds. Took a long drag from his custom thing in his mouth. Blew smoke out through his nose with a shake of his head.

It was like a dark and white festival movie. Too much melancholia and weird looks on everyone’s faces.

“Busy day?” Oldir asked and coughed with smoke. Whole cool feeling coming from an old elf vanished like a dream.

“Kobolds.” Eren set the crossbows down near the wall. “Six of them and that was just us. Emily had to deal other things.”

Oldir’s expression didn’t change. He picked up one of the scimitars and turned it over in his hands. Tested the edge with his thumb.

“Forged one. Kobolds didn’t make this. Probably bought or stole it from others. I hope this didn’t come from humans. I don’t want any human closer to area. No hard feelings by the way.” He put it back down and took another drag.

“Yeah, none taken. As you can see…” He didn’t have to explain it as Oldir looked at him with a warmer look than the last twenty days. He already accepted him even if he was a human and now he was one of them.

Nothing changed in his eyes.

Emily didn’t stop walking while they had a bromance moment. “We have to talk tomorrow with the whole village. But tomorrow.”

Oldir nodded. That was the entire conversation.

But the real commotion started when they crossed the central roads.

It was late afternoon and some elves were returning from field work or just sitting outside their homes. The dragon scare from days ago had kept people closer to the village center and there were more eyes around than usual.

Those eyes found Eren fast.

He had been avoiding the village center since his transformation as Emily wasn’t ready in the afternoon.

Today there was no avoiding it because Thadric and his two dinosaur things were making enough noise to attract every elf within earshot.

The looks came in different stages. First confusion. A few elves squinted at him like they were trying to match his face with the old Eren. Then the realization with light bulbs on their heads. And lastly …the staring.

An older elf woman carrying a basket of fruit actually stopped walking and watched him pass with her mouth slightly open. Two younger looking but probably middle aged elf near the well elbowed each other and whispered.

Eren felt their eyes on his body. With his new senses he could feel too much about too many things. Some staring wasn’t hard to locate. Even if his eyes were closed, he could know who was watching him.

This is getting weirder…

He wasn’t nervous before but his shirt was too tight and the fabric pulled across his chest and shoulders. His neck was thicker so there was some discomfort and his arms looked ridiculous compared to one day ago.

So he looked awkward as hell!

It feels like I went to a neighbor visit with my mother and there are all women in the house.

Eren actually experienced many moments like that in his teenage years and this felt similar. He wanted to shrink but that wasn’t really possible at a hundred and ninety-five centimeters.

“Don’t look at them.” Emily muttered. She was walking closer to him now. Her hand found his arm and squeezed.

“I’m not looking.”

“Good.” But Emily was looking. At every single person who stared at her mate. Her grip on his arm tightened each time.

She said nothing though. She was the type to list every possible danger first and deal with them later.

Scary, beautiful, sexy pregnant and extra emotional elf woman.

Eren didn’t want to make her upset about anything.
