Chapter 47: An intimate moment

Roxanne had never behaved like this before.

She was the daughter of the former chief of a neighboring village.

Her mate had won the right to claim her after a long, hard-fought battle against the other suitors who desired her.

All her life, she had lived like a piece of decoration, someone known more as the ’chief’s wife’ than as a person.

That was why, when Luke said he would treat her simply as Roxanne, she felt strangely elated.

Now, the two of them walked side by side under the pale moonlight. There was no destination in mind, only the quiet calm that surrounded them.

Just then, Luke said, “Hey, wear this. You might hurt yourself.” As he spoke, he took off his sandals and placed them in front of her.

Roxanne chuckled. “Such a caring young man. Save those gestures for your future mate.” Even so, she did not refuse the kindness and slipped her feet into the sandals.

They were warm and comfortable. Although a little big, she had no trouble walking in them.

Her words made Luke smile. “Well, at least now I know these things will make my future mate happy.”

Roxanne laughed softly. “Of course they would. A woman likes to be treated kindly by her mate.”

Suddenly, Luke intertwined his fingers with hers and said, “Is that so? Then let me treat this as practice for the day I finally get a mate.”

Roxanne’s cheeks turned red. She averted her eyes and muttered, “What are you even blabbering about…”

Luke gave her a teasing grin. “Don’t worry. I won’t treat you badly, my mate.”

Roxanne lightly slapped the back of his hand. “Stop. You shouldn’t joke about such things.”

Luke didn’t push any further and gently guided her beneath a tree.

“Let’s sit for a bit. I’m quite tired.”

Roxanne nodded, and soon they were sitting side by side, their shoulders lightly touching.

The night was peaceful. The soft buzzing of insects and the distant howls of wolves filled the quiet space around them.

Leaning back against the rough bark, Luke asked, “How do you feel now?”

Roxanne’s lips were already curved in a faint smile when she answered, “A lot better. That house might be big, but sometimes it feels suffocating.”

Luke nodded. I understand that feeling, he thought inwardly. In his previous life, he had possessed everything a person could desire, yet he had still felt empty.

Glancing at her, he suggested, “If you want, we could come out and wander like this more often.”

Roxanne narrowed her eyes. “You’re suggesting that I sneak out of my own house at night to spend time with a man who isn’t my mate?”

Luke grinned. “And yet that sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Don’t lie to me. I can see it in your eyes.”

Roxanne snickered but didn’t deny it.

She turned away, staring up at the sky with a distant look.

Watching her side profile, Luke suddenly felt an urge rise within him.

He suddenly turned and cupped her cheek, “Hey…I have always wondered what you apply to your lips.”

Roxanne felt her heart rate suddenly racing at the closeness but being an older woman, she forced herself to remain calm and said, “Just berry syrup…why?”

His eyes grew half-lidded as he asked, “Mind…if I take a taste?”

Roxanne was confused as to why he would want to taste it. But before she could have said anything, he planted his lips on hers.

Roxanne froze the instant his mouth covered hers.

She made a tiny, startled sound against him—half breath, half whimper—and that seemed to ignite something in him.

He tilted his head, deepening the kiss with a lazy, sensual drag of his lips. Then came the first gentle suck on her lower lip, pulling the plump flesh into his mouth, tasting the faint sweetness of the berry syrup she’d confessed to.

Roxanne’s knees actually trembled. She didn’t understand why heat was blooming so violently low in her belly from something as simple as him drawing on her lip like it was candy.

His tongue touched the seam of her mouth; light and teasing.

She parted instinctively, not because she knew what to do, but because her body seemed to have decided it wanted more of whatever this was.

The moment her lips opened he slid inside, slow and hot and slick. Roxanne’s hands flew up to grip his shirt without thinking, knuckles whitening.

His tongue stroked over hers—once, twice—patient, coaxing, then bolder. When he sucked lightly on the tip of her tongue she made another helpless little noise, louder this time, and felt her whole body clench in a place she hadn’t even known could feel so empty and aching.

He then suddenly parted his lips from hers, leaving her gasping. Her heavy chest moved up and down, cheeks flushed.

“What was this?” She asked, her voice slightly trembling.

“A special thing…did you enjoy it?” He asked before licking his lips.

Roxanne took a deep breath, “I-I don’t know…it felt wrong doing it…but…”

“But you enjoyed it, no?” Luke asked, his eyes heated.

Roxanne froze, not knowing how to to respond.

He then suddenly told her, “You remember it, right? Not someone’s mate but Roxanne. So tell me, did you like it?”

Roxanne’s face grew hotter at those words before she gave a meek nod in agreement.

She didn’t know why but when he played with her lips and tasted her…it made her body go strangely warm and tingly. She wanted to experience it again.

Luke grinned and said, “Well, we can do it again if you want.”

Roxanne’s heart trembled at those words. Somehow, she felt if she allowed him to do that once again…she would never be able to forget it. And…just a tiny part of her believed she would get addicted to it.

That’s why, she hurriedly shook her head and said, “N-No, let’s not.”

Luke wasn’t disappointed by that answer since her reaction was enough to tell him that he has stirred something in her heart. And for now, that was enough.

Soon, he escorted her back home safely and started his way back home.

His dearest was waiting for him~
