“A-Are you sure about this?” Roxanne would not lie. She was nervous.

No, she had already gotten over that initial nervousness of lying to her mate to meet another man in secret. This nervousness was far greater in comparison.

They were standing near the outer perimeter of the village, at a spot carefully chosen during the hour when the guard shifts changed and a new pair of soldiers began patrolling the area.

This small window was what Luke intended to exploit, slipping out of the village while taking Roxanne with him.

He could have used the main exit, but having the chief’s mate beside him restricted his movements. That was why he chose this hidden route.

He had used his skill to identify the least guarded area before bringing Roxanne here, fully prepared to breach the perimeter and wander into the forest.

Yet now, she hesitated. That was only natural.

Roxanne was not someone who often stepped outside. In this world, most women remained occupied with household work or tasks confined within four walls.

Luke cupped her cheek gently and said, “Then trust in that faith and follow me. I swear on my life I will bring you back safely and escort you home.”

Roxanne looked into his deep eyes. The warmth, the comfort… she had forgotten when a man had last looked at her like that.

Luke was not leaving the village for a hunt. He was taking her somewhere, a place that might help her unwind.

He had taken time away from his own family just to be here with her.

In return for that sincerity, she could at least place her trust in him.

Holding the hand that rested against her cheek, she nodded. “I understand. Take me.”

A faint smile appeared on Luke’s lips. He activated his skill for a brief moment, ensuring no one was approaching. Then he took her hand, slipped out of the hollow trunk, and moved toward the fence that enclosed the village.

Along with the wooden fence, barbed wire had been wrapped tightly around it to prevent any beast from slipping through. It stood about five feet tall, far from something Roxanne could cross on her own.

“How are we going to get over it?” she asked nervously, glancing around to check if anyone was approaching. Yes, she was anxious, but beneath that fear stirred a thrill she could not deny.

Luke nodded. “Just a moment.”

He slipped behind the tree they had been hiding in, pulled out a metal ladder from the shop, and returned holding it.

Roxanne tilted her head in confusion at the sight. “Where were you hiding that?”

Luke shrugged. “Don’t worry about it. Let’s hurry.”

He unfolded the ladder at its center. Thanks to its length, it stretched clean over the fence, its far end settling firmly on the other side.

Then Luke turned to her and said, “Come on… bridge over.”

Roxanne nodded slowly, her nervousness plain as she reached out and touched the cold metal. Her gaze lingered on the sharp wires below.

She swallowed hard.

Her feet trembled, and with just the first step, she already seemed on the verge of losing balance.

In the end, she gave up and looked at Luke, her wide eyes silently pleading.

Luke sighed and shook his head. Approaching her, he crouched before the lady before asking her, “Climb on my back. Let this servant help the lady cross the border.”

Roxanne blushed faintly. This kind of physical intimacy was new to her. However, since she knew they couldn’t linger here for long, she threw away her hesitantly and approached him.

Tilting herself against his back, she encircled her arms around his neck.
