Chapter 87: Take care of yourself

Luke woke up with a smile on his face. Last night was one to remember.

’Goddamn…it was intoxicating.’ If not for Monica falling asleep right after, Luke was raring to go for a few more rounds actually. But then, her stamina was slowly building so he didn’t push her anymore.

Slowly rising from the bed, he looked to his left and found both of them had already left. Well, no surprise there since Luke wakes up the most late in the house.

Just as he stretched his arms and his lips parted in a yawn, a notification from the system froze him.

Luke hummed in surprise. There was no doubt that doing random risky things could earn him rewards from the system, but this might be the first time he had received such a high reward, even an item, just from sleeping with someone.

Did that mean… the greater the risk, the greater the reward?

Naturally, he wasn’t going to actively seek out risky situations, but now he would stay mindful of what he might gain if he allowed himself to be a little daring.

He got up and put on his shirt.

From across the hall, he could hear faint hammering and the movement of people.

He stepped into his own room and heard a familiar voice.

“Oh, you’re awake, son,” Gustav called out with a warm smile.

Luke nodded in response before turning his attention to the three men busily repairing his bed.

“How long will it take?” he asked, scratching his waist under his shirt.

“Just a few more minutes,” one of them replied.

Luke nodded, then took out a pouch from his vest and tossed it to the man. “That’s for the owner. Tell him that’s the full payment.”

He had considered deducting some money due to the delay, but the design of the bed was smooth, sturdy, and impressively heavy. It had taken two strong men to carry it.

So yes, he was satisfied.

The transporter smiled brightly and gave a respectful bow. “The owner extends his thanks.”

Luke rolled his eyes before telling his father, “Keep an eye on them. Don’t let them leave until you’ve checked the strength of the bed yourself.”

Gustav huffed and nodded. “You can leave it to me, son.”

Luke smirked inwardly, leaving the old man to it as he made his way toward the main hall, where he found Ginna sweeping the floor.

He took a sharp breath. The way she was bent over made her full hips hard to ignore.

Damn, even at that age, she still has curves to show off.

He restrained the urge to give a firm slap to those meat buns and instead asked, “Where is mother?”

Ginna looked up with a smile. “In the kitchen. Do you need something, Luke?”

He shook his head. “Did you sleep well last night?”

Ginna chuckled. “I talked so much yesterday that the moment I lay down, I fell asleep.”

Luke nodded with a faint smile. “I hope you live a good life here.”

“I already am.” She gently held his hand before adding, “You’ve brought color into my dull life by giving me the chance to spend the remaining years with my daughter.”

Luke gave her hand a light squeeze but said nothing more.

Then he turned and headed toward the kitchen to find his beloved mother.

She was blowing into the wood with a metal pipe, trying to strengthen the flames.

Luke frowned and immediately stepped in. “Wait, mother.”

Monica startled and turned toward him.

Luke sighed, then bought a hand fan from his inventory and handed it to her. “If this exists, why are you using something so risky?” Inhaling all that carbon could make her sick. It wasn’t like a hand fan was some luxury. There were already a few in the house.

Monica gave a sheepish smile. “This is quicker… ahaha.” She knew her son was worried, so she didn’t argue and switched to using the fan instead.

Luke shook his head in resignation. Seriously, this woman was far too careless when it came to her own health.

Once Monica stood up, she looked at him and asked, “Do you have work today as well? Should I pack lunch for you?”

Luke stayed silent for a moment. Then he took her hand and said, “This might hurt a little.”

Before she could react, he made a small cut with a knife.

Monica looked surprised more than hurt as he drew a droplet of her blood, his eyes narrowing as he examined it.

Naturally, Luke was assessing her condition using his special eye.

Thankfully, aside from slightly elevated sugar levels, her body seemed fine.

Shaking his head, he gently cupped her cheek. “Mother… please take better care of yourself. I can only do my work out there without worry because I know the one person I love is safe and healthy at home… waiting for me.”

Monica’s heart felt warm and heavy at the same time.

Lowering her head, she said softly, “I understand, Luke. I’ll take better care of myself.”

He gently pulled her closer and embraced her.

Some might call him overreacting, since women in this world had used such methods in their daily lives for generations. But he didn’t care about tradition.

All he knew was that he had to keep the one he loved safe.
