Chapter 36: Grave Knight
The four undead were cut into pieces as if they were butchered meat set up for cooking.
Riven was so shocked that he didn’t even feel the connection between them snap. What was that? What was that sword? Is that even a sword?
Not only the undead but their weapons were cut into shattered pieces as well. Blood and gore splashed onto Spartacus, making him look like a monstrous figure.
Spartacus returned his sword and faced Riven once again. “Is that all the tricks you can do? Pathetic. You are not worthy of my sword.”
Riven gritted his teeth as he came to the realization that he wouldn’t survive. And if not for his Undying Sigil, he would have run already, but even then, his body moved back a step without his conscious will.
’…I don’t know what will happen if I fail… The Death Ledger spoke of me being reversed as the target…..but I don’t know what it means… But with the book twisting with my Sigil… I don’t want to risk anything…’
He had seen the sword that Spartacus drew. It wasn’t normal, even by a practitioner’s standard. It was a sword filled with hatred and deep, shimmering anger.
Riven opened his mouth and began to speak. The words came out like hissing, cold whispers that felt old and stale to the ears. “Grave Knight, Heed me!”
A cold wind blew in the clearing, and the ground shuddered as a ripple passed beneath. Riven’s shadow gained quality and slid free, turning into a door that rose from the ground.
Ancient words were etched into the edges of the door, and death aura radiated from it in waves. The door opened with an ear-grating sound, and the Grave Knight emerged.
It was different from the previous one that Kivara destroyed. This one was covered from head to toe in blue armor, taller than Spartacus by half his body.
But its body was abnormally thin, as if the armor was warping around a skeleton instead of flesh. It carried a long axe in its hand.
The Grave Knight stood behind Riven, and even Spartacus had to pause. “Oh? What do you have there? A companion of yours? I see. So he was the one sent against me. You are just the fodder.”
Riven gritted his teeth. “I think I like it better when you don’t say anything! Kill him!”
He gestured.
The Grave Knight directly flew above his head, axe raised high. The axe was fixed with a long metal pole, making it easy to hold with two hands and swing with maximum strength.
Wam!
Spartacus raised his weapon and used it to shield against the attack. The two met, and metal screamed against metal! He wasn’t accounting for the strength behind the Grave Knight, and he was almost forced to his knees.
Spartacus jumped back from the Grave Knight. “You are strong.”
Of course, the Grave Knight could not reply, but Riven felt proud of it. Spartacus did not know it, but that was actually Riven’s strength. After all, an undead summon would only be as powerful as the necromancer.
Spartacus drew his sword. The red blade flickered like fire, as long as his body, thick and sharp. A simple air slash caused a windstorm around him. “I will take you seriously!”
He tensed and lurched forward, the ground beneath him cracking with the force he applied. His sword whipped up and down, straight at the Grave Knight’s shoulder.
A simple tilting of its weapon, and the slash met the blade of the axe.
Boom!
Stones and dust flew into the air as the two weapons met, generating a shockwave of wind. The Grave Knight bent its body and pushed against the sword. Then it began to wave its weapon, spinning so flexibly as if it was whipping around a metal rope.
Marks covered the ground as it moved forward, its longer reach ensuring it kept its opponents far from it while hammering them.
’…..if Spartacus were weaker, he’d already be dead… but I’ve learned a lesson here…It’s not just about strength or technique but what they do… Also, my fighting techniques are so poor compared to my cultivation…’
Spartacus didn’t engage. He kept giving ground before the wall of steel. But suddenly, he stopped moving, and his second hand went to his sword, holding it with both hands.
He crouched a little and tensed, the veins in his body popping as the light from the sword flared a brighter red, like fresh blood.
Riven’s eyes widened, and he began to jump backward. “He’s about to do something.”
Spartacus slashed forward. A sword arc made of red energy twisted and leaped out of his weapon with explosive force.
The Grave Knight stood weaving its weapon around as soon as it felt the change in the air, then brought the weapon around to cut the sword slash coming toward it.
Wam!
The axe struck the sword arc but didn’t directly cut it.
The sword arc broke into two immediately upon contact, and the two halves slashed into its armor. The force was enough to send it hurling back.
“Oh? You’re not dead?”
The Grave Knight’s armor at the abdomen had been twisted and torn, revealing dried bones. And Riven felt their connection tremble.
“Hehe! You are strong. I will use an actual warrior’s way of fighting for you!”
Spartacus brought his left hand toward his sword. He used his thumb and middle finger to hold the hilt, then snapped his fingers.
The sword began to spin in the air by itself with no one touching it. Each turn was followed by a whirlwind of energy, and soon, a small tornado was weaving around the sword.
’..ah..shit…’ Riven knew he couldn’t allow something like that. But how would he stop a warrior stronger than him? ’…Right! The Grave Knight!…’
Riven didn’t know the extent of its intelligence or what it could do. He’d never actually had the time to study any of his techniques in detail before.
But this wasn’t the time to be thinking of such things! So he did what came to his mind. He gathered his energy from his Sigil and sent it down their connection.
