Chapter 65: What did you bring
Everywhere was silent. It wasn’t just shock; it was absolutely stunned silence that stemmed from witnessing something impossible. Riven wasn’t supposed to win. It should have been a total joke where Jasper taught Riven a lesson.
It should have been too simple. After all, Riven was from the Village, and Jasper? He’s a bright star from the Green Clouds Sect that even the rank three were wary of.
He was someone that was actually strong, the top of all rank two.
And he was beaten by Riven. Not only beaten, his face was smashed in and he was sent out of the platform, passing out from one punch.
Tong’s eyes flashed with small lightning as he gazed at Riven. He took a step forward before he stopped. He was thinking the same thing as all the other instructors were thinking. “The boy. Why isn’t he tired? He’s not even breaking a sweat. He’s looking as if he could fight Jasper at his peak state again.”
That day, a new legend was born that spread through all the five mountains of the Green Clouds Sect. An uneducated barbarian that ate leaves and insects and wore dirty clothes without shoes had climbed the mountains of the low practitioners and then challenged everyone until he won.
He was called the barbaric devil.
Later, much later, after there was a subtle transfer of ’fans’ from the unconscious Jasper to Riven, Kivara escorted him to her master’s residence that was built apart from all the other halls.
On the way over, Riven asked her why she set him up like that. She shrugged and looked at the sky suddenly, quietly. It took a while before she said anything. “This is a shit shabby sect. If you can’t even beat the one who’s at the top yet, then you should forget about doing anything spectacular with your life.”
She didn’t speak with hate or anger; she said it as if it was something that was expected. It made Riven curious. “Then why are you here? If you think this place is like a cage, then why are you here?”
“Because my master is here.” Suddenly she looked at him with an expression he couldn’t read. “But maybe we’ll be moving again. Come, we’re at my master’s place.”
It was a small building, but it was bigger than any building that Riven had seen back in his village. But his perspective about things was changing, and he knew that while the building wasn’t bad, it was too ordinary.
They entered through the gate, and Kivara whispered to him. “His name is Zandrel. He has the puppet Sigil. He’s in the low Auracrest rank.”
Riven nodded and his body tightened. The last Auracrest rank that he met was a Necromancer that killed his sister. He took a deep breath. He needed her master to accept him so that he could get used to the life of a practitioner before he could carry out his revenge.
He needed somewhere he could lie low. ’…somewhere Vaelith won’t be able to find me….that’s why I can’t join any Necromancer Sect for now…I want to build enough power before I can find that bastard…at least get to Auracrest rank…..’
’….blindly running into things will be a quick way to die…and if I’m not accepted….I’ll just find another sect that’s small like this…now that I know better….my power is enough to enter sects…they might just be wary since I have a sect already….’
The door to the room was opened and they directly entered into the first room. Master Zandrel was sitting in a cross-legged position and was pouring a clear liquid into three small cups.
Riven took a sniff of it and knew it was alcohol. He’d never tasted one before, but he’d seen it before in the village. He just didn’t have the money to buy one.
Zandrel looked up when they entered. His eyes were still like white stones, but they weren’t flashing. He smiled at them. “My lost student! To think you’d show up so suddenly! See, I pour you a drink to celebrate your return!”
Kivara glared as she sat. She took one of the small cups and drank the alcohol greedily, little droplets dripping down her lips. Riven watched her as she licked it off. “Ah! You! How dare you leave me behind in the Shadowwood! I nearly died!”
Zandrel grimaced. He was a thin man that looked as if a strong wind might carry him away. He waved his hand and cleared his throat. “Now, Kivara. You know I’m always after your progression. The Shadowwood is good for you since you’ve been in this sect. You need something that will give you a sense of danger, and see, you even found a friend!”
Kivara’s expression soured. “He’s not a friend.”
Zandrel snorted and looked at Riven. “I know you enough, Kivara. I can read you like a book. Now that you’ve brought him to me, what do you want?”
Kivara hesitated. “His Sigil.”
“Is something wrong with it?” Master Zandrel asked sharply.
Kivara shook her head. “I just want you to have a look at it.”
Riven felt Zandrel’s attention focused on him. A wave of aura rolled off and slid into Riven.
Riven stiffened immediately because, unlike when Kivara did her own, her master’s aura felt far more dangerous, like a needle poised to strike.
Riven took a deep breath and tried his best to relax.
At first, Zandrel was wearing a concentrated expression on his face, but suddenly his eyes widened and he flinched. He raised his hand as if he wanted to grasp something, but then he recoiled as if he’d been struck.
He was thrown backward so suddenly by an invisible force, he slammed into the wall and broke a few chairs.
Kivara looked from Riven to her master and had a smile. “Ah, I forgot to mention that his Sigil can react, a little.”
Zandrel picked himself up. His nose was bleeding, but a strange joy was lit on his face. “What is this you’ve brought, Kivara? The rank of this Sigil! I’ve seen no such before. It can only be one thing!”
