Chapter 58: Dray
Riven remained in confusion until he heard the full story about this Jasper that was making all of them react so much.
Apparently, Jasper was a rank two like him, but not just an ordinary rank two. He was ranked number one in the mountain for the rank two practitioners, and he was the down-to-earth bully.
He bullied anyone weaker than him, and he always did it in the most humiliating way. On the mountain, the only people he could not touch were the rank three.
Jasper stepped forward and did a nodding bow at Tong. “Senior brother Tong, thank you for the opportunity, but please, can you give it to Dray?”
Tong narrowed his eyes. “Explain yourself.”
Jasper was a green guy with a handsome face and a lean, muscular body. His smile was charming, and he was the secret crush of a lot of female students, even the rank three.
But the cruelty in his eyes could not be hidden. It brimmed from his eyes as he looked at everyone weaker than him with disgust.
He spread his hand as he gestured at Riven without even looking at him. “Dray is the strongest rank one and a proper genius that is even punching above his weight. Already he can give the weakest rank two some trouble, much less this barbarian. Let Dray deal with him. He’s not even worth my time.”
Riven blinked. “…you little shit… I’m not worth your time?…”
Tong sneered. “That makes sense, Jasper. Alright. Dray! Come out and trade pointers with him. Since you are rank one and he is rank two, then it is not fair. We should put some handicap in place.”
Dray was a mousey boy with black eyes and a thin body, but the way he carried himself was full of confidence that was not expected of his small form.
He glanced at Riven and bowed. “I’ve not fought anyone from the Shadowwood before. Is it true that it’s filled with monsters?”
Riven was caught by surprise again because he thought every one of the students would be like Tong, but this small guy, with the way he was talking, was more curious, and he was actually respectful toward him. “I only live at the edge. There’s not much monsters and animals. Even the insects are not that much.”
Tong sneered. “Enough. The handicap is that Riven isn’t allowed to use any technique. But he can use martial arts techniques, should he wish.”
“…wait… isn’t that unfair? I’ve not perfectly mastered my techniques, not to talk of martial arts techniques… Tong, you bastard, you really have it for me huh…”
Dray hesitated when he heard that, but then he shrugged. How else was he to fight a rank two?
Tong left the platform for them, leaving Riven and Dray facing each other. Then he frowned as he remembered something. “Right. What’s your power? What type of practitioner are you? Dray is an internal practitioner. What about you?”
Riven shrugged. “I’m a Necromancer.”
“As expected from a village barbari… what?!” Tong exploded. His calm expression shattered immediately and his eyes popped. “You are what?”
Riven frowned. What’s with the reaction? And not only Tong, every single person in the training ground was focusing on him. Most especially Kivara’s master. His eyes were hidden beneath the cap he wore, but it was as if his eyes had suddenly turned into small suns that were trying to burn a hole into him.
Riven turned towards him, but the man quickly pulled his aura pressure back. It did not even last two seconds, but what Riven felt made him feel unsettled.
But all the other students also staring at him made him feel unnerved. It was as if the trick that the dog was doing had suddenly turned more advanced. Was that some look of envy he saw?
“What?”
Dray scratched his head. “Well, I don’t know if you know this since you came from the Shadowwood and all that, but Necromancers are a big deal here in the Western continent. It can even be said that this is the land of Necromancers.”
“Because of the Necromancer King?” Riven asked.
Dray shrugged. “The biggest and most powerful Clans and Sects here are all Necromancers. They are the true rulers of the Western continent, although others might argue differently. But the fact is that…”
“Necromancers are arrogant bastards,” Tong said. “They think they are some kind of royal shit, even those that are poor like dirt. Those bastards, they think they are special because they had a king at some point in time.”
“…oh…” Riven thought. “…there is some kind of stigma against Necromancers?…”
At some point in time, Tong had clashed with Necromancers. It was an ugly event that made his disdain for Necromancers increase.
And because Necromancers are proud and snobbish, most people do not like them, coupled with the fact that Necromancers kill to add to their powers.
They never expected Riven to be one. Their gazes sharpened.
Tong smiled and thought to himself. “…good… a Necromancer… I will see what’s special about your Sigil… a village Necromancer. The joke can’t be funnier…”
Dray looked at Riven curiously. “Why don’t you join all those Necromancer Sects? They’re always looking for more members, and if you’re, er, strong, then you might even be made an inner member.”
Riven smiled. “I want to join the Green Clouds Sect.”
Dray shrugged. “Then you’ll be our first Necromancer. Because you are new and came from the village, then I’ll give you this warning. I am very fast. Even some rank two have difficulty catching up to my speed.”
Riven nodded. “You are very fast? Then I will do my best in catching up.”
Dray crouched and narrowed his eyes. “Don’t worry, I won’t use a difficult technique since you can’t use one of your own.”
Riven checked his Sigil and felt the aura still remaining. He still had a lot. The trip back did not use up much aura, and the overnight sleep made him regenerate enough power.
He took a deep breath and filled his body with his aura, circulating it in his body like blood. More deep breaths and more circulation. His eyes glowed.
