Chapter 74: Sudden death
Zandrel closed his ears to all they were saying and instead turned to Kivara. “What do you think?”
She shook her head. “When he was going for the strips, then he ran into an undergrowth and we lost sight of him briefly. I think he’s planning something.”
He nodded. “Do you think he’s a coward?”
Kivara snorted. “Everyone is a coward. Do you think anyone will truly stand in front of a life-threatening situation when there’s a chance to run away? We are selfish creatures and our first act of service is to ourselves. Always.”
Zandrel smiled. “I can’t argue with that. Let’s see if our little friend did have something up.”

Riven found a branch to rest against and he took several breaths. “I need a lot of undead to be able to fight a group like that head-on. Powerful undead.”
“They’re really formidable when they come together like that. No wonder people fear sects and clans. I can’t even imagine the type of powers the bigger sects have.”
He sighed. “I need the strips to get into the top ten so I can start filling my stars and get ready to advance. I need… must be powerful as soon as possible. The more time my sister’s body spends with that bastard, the more he would continue…”
Riven shuddered. He didn’t want to think about what his sister’s body was going through. Or… if he even still had it. His gut and hands tightened. “No. I must hold on to the little hope I have left. Why shouldn’t he have it? No. I must focus on right now.”
“Yes. Get the strip, fill the stars, and advance. And find a way to advance Spartacus.”
Suddenly he looked up at the sky, with about twenty more minutes left for the sun to be completely gone from the sky. He stood up and looked at the direction of the clearing. “It should be starting soon.”
With that, he began to go towards the clearing, but he wasn’t rushing. He was going at it at a slower pace. He formed his sword and his body turned slightly green.
In the clearing, Lucien was demonstrating in front of the group, explaining something to them. “He’s not that strong martial technique-wise, but he’s very fast, and that was why he was able to counter my attack.”
“Why are you disturbing yourself about this? The guy isn’t a match for us, so why bother with him?” one of them said.
Lucien shook his head in disappointment. “Have you forgotten that the instructors told us to not underestimate anyone? No offense, Jasper, but you would likely have beaten him if you hadn’t underestimated him.”
Jasper gritted his teeth but didn’t reply.
Lucien moved towards the undead monster. He pointed at the hand. “Do you see how whole the monster is when he brought it here? That means he killed it in a very clean stroke.”
“You absolutely don’t want to underestimate that…”
Suddenly something impossibly fast reached out from the monster’s mouth and yanked Lucien’s hand forward, pulling him into the monster’s mouth.
It was so fast and sudden that Lucien didn’t have the chance to shout out or scream. The others, who had been watching the whole thing that Lucien was doing with a bored expression, were totally caught off guard as well.
“What the?”
They didn’t have the time to understand because the next instant, a streak of blue light left the mouth of the monster and flew up into the sky.
Lucien had been killed.
The thought slammed into the remaining nine of them at the same time. They began to move, but not fast enough. The monster’s head erupted outward, and from the inside something blurred out. Red light flashed, and immediately a shield covered two students, their heads painted with bright red light before they devolved into blue light and flew into the sky.
“It’s that bloody warrior!” Jasper shouted, his voice trembling a little as he remembered how Spartacus had cut through his technique as if it was cake.
But they were Practitioners, and the remaining seven quickly faced Spartacus. “He’s the only one. Kill him quickly. His surprise attack can’t work anymore!”
They were forming into a formation to fight him, but they didn’t understand Spartacus. He was a warrior, true and true. He didn’t wait or hesitate. He threw himself forward. A single step was a leap enough to carry him across a great distance.
His sword was a throbbing red light. It flashed, and a sword arc jumped out, crossing the distance in the span of an eye. The girl with the wind power created a hard air shield in front of the group, and the sword arc slammed into it with a crack, causing lines to appear on the shield, but it still held.
She shouted, “Don’t worry. Attacks can go through my shield, so you can attack…”
The next instant, something that resembled a sword that was heated to the highest degree pierced through the shield, shattering it, and slammed into her head so hard that even with the shield snapping into place around her, she immediately passed out with her head painted a shocking bright red.
Jasper stared wide-eyed. “Did… he just throw his sword?”
Indeed, Spartacus threw his sword and was now running at them with nothing but his blustering muscles.
Just like that, four of them were taken down?
“A…tttt…ttack him!” Jasper completely lost all reason. He lifted his hand and began to whisper spells. A space collapsed behind Spartacus and yanked him backwards. “There. Kill it now!”
They never had the chance to attack. Something heavy slammed into one of the students so hard that she was sent hurling into the forest. Only her blue light remained.
One of the students turned and got a hammer smash to the head.
Jasper turned, his hands jerking and separating. The Knight Grave, that looked like three people combined together, was ripped apart from the middle.
The two parts fell into different places. But it wasn’t dead, and with it taking aura from Riven, it threw its hammer so fast the student didn’t get the chance, as the war hammer did a full-body smash on him.
