Chapter 61: How to fight a Necromancer
“Just how are you doing it!” Riven growled as he rubbed his chest.
Jasper watched him curiously and casually. “And how are you doing what you are doing? As a Necromancer, you should not be this strong. Necromancers rely on their summons and spells, but you are strong and fast. How are you doing it?
“Even now, the punch that I gave you should be more than enough to make you stagger, but you are still standing as if nothing hit you.”
Riven didn’t say anything. His Sigil could simply contain more aura than normal, and so he had a lot of aura to work with. He focused on his opponent and tried to think about what he was doing. ’.. teleportation? But that won’t explain why I couldn’t move, and it was as if I was being drawn towards him… wait… drawn towards him…?’
Riven looked down immediately and studied the footprint of the place he was standing and that of Jasper. Since the fight began, there was only one set of footprints. It wasn’t Jasper’s.
’… I’m the one that was moving… not him!…’
Jasper was looking at him, and immediately he saw the expression on Riven’s face, he smirked and raised his hand to gesture. The space around him warped again, and without missing a beat, Riven slid his sword to the ground, thrusting in!
His sword pierced the stone floor like mud just when a force suddenly gripped his body and yanked him forward. The sword in the stone screeched, and small sparks flew into the air as the force pulled harder.
Riven’s hand was like steel on the sword, but his shoulder was flaring with pain as the force increased. ’… ah! I guess I will have to go the complete necromancer way…’
“Heed me, Grave Knight!”
A cold wind blew on the platform. His shadow detached from him and formed a pool, and from within the pool, a door swung open, from which a Grave Knight walked through.
The process didn’t take more than three seconds, but to the students and instructors, it was like minutes. They watched in fascination.
Most of the students didn’t understand what they were seeing, but the instructors sat up and shared glances among each other. “This guy is truly in rank two?”
“How’s that possible? This looks like an undead of a mid-rank practitioner! How can he have a permanent undead?”
“Do you see the way his shadow moves? That’s the unique mind space of the necromancers where they can store their undead, and it’s only possible at the mid-level rank!”
The instructors buzzed among each other. “Are you sure he’s from a village and not a prodigy of some mysterious powerful Clans?”
But with all the instructors talking, only Kivara’s master kept quiet. But his eyes were like sharpened stone that glistened with a white luster.
He looked at Kivara and nodded at her.
Back at the platform, on the side, Tong was clenching his hand so hard. ’… what is this… he has a permanent summon?…’
Necromancers at the low rank don’t have access to the mind space where they could store their undead. So they usually carry them along in caskets, or folded up in cheap spatial bags. The rich could even have real spatial space to store them.
But now, Riven had broken all of the norms and directly did something that wasn’t done. For all that understood, they felt some kind of kill as they stared at the undead.
Simultaneously, Jasper changed his target from Riven to the Grave Knight. Because as he said earlier, necromancers are not known for their own fighting skills but what they could make their summons do.
In a strategic battle with necromancers, it’s better to go after their summons first and then critically wound them before facing the necromancers.
Jasper just started that strategy.
As Riven watched, he saw Jasper raise his hand and draw it forward while the space around his body warped and twisted. The distance between Jasper and the Grave Knight suddenly shuddered and collapsed.
It was so sudden and fast that before Riven knew what was happening, the Grave Knight was immediately in front of Jasper.
“What!” Riven’s face widened. “So that’s how he was doing it!”
And just like he did to Riven, Jasper was ready and punched the Grave Knight sharply in the stomach.
But it wasn’t that simple. The connection between Riven and the Grave Knight flared as it drew more powers into it.
It twisted out of Jasper’s punch. It didn’t just dodge, the Grave Knight dodged in such a way that there was not much distance between the punch and its stomach.
“What!”
Everyone was surprised and shocked, because the Grave Knight’s sword rose up and down sharply in reply.
Everything was so fast that only the rank two and three could really catch up to what was happening. What others saw was blurring figures.
Immediately Jasper restored the space that was collapsed, and the Grave Knight returned to the place it was before.
’… so he can collapse it and restore it?… sure is formidable… but… my Grave Knight isn’t weak!…’
The Grave Knight this time was like the previous one with black armor and a black crystal sword. And it had reacted to Jasper’s attack automatically. Even Riven didn’t have the time to give it a command.
The students began to buzz again. “Are you sure you haven’t looked down on this village boy?”
“This is the first time I’m seeing Jasper retreat from someone his own rank!”
“That undead gave me a peculiar feeling. Is this like one of the special unique undead that the necromancer young masters of those big sects get?”
“How can a villager have something like that!”
“Wait, why are we even trusting Senior Sister Kivara’s words on this! She always plays her pranks with her serious face. This guy is actually a young master of some Clan!”
“Yes! How else will you explain him still standing minutes later with Jasper who’s ranked one!”
Riven didn’t know if he should laugh or cry. Or get angry. ’… just how far do these people look down on me?…’
Jasper sneered. “A young master from a Clan or sect? All the better to mix your face with dirt.”
