Chapter 59: You bastard
His body was filled with strength, and his perception sharpened. He narrowed his eyes and captured Dray in his eyes. The short boy was like a wrung cloth the way he was standing, waiting for the slightest push to lurch forward.
An aura of bitter coldness warped around Riven, coiling around his limbs. The two faced each other and the space between them tensed as they waited for the signal to start.
Riven smiled. He really didn’t think of Dray as an opponent, rather like a boy he should teach some things.
Tong was perfectly at ease where he was standing. Jasper had gone to join him. “Senior Brother Tong, this boy is really courting death by challenging you and by getting close to Senior Sister Kivara!”
Suddenly, Jasper felt a pressure envelop him like a ferocious beast was about to swallow him. His heart galloped in his chest and his breath froze. He stiffened and turned to Tong, who was watching him with eyes that were filled with cold.
“Close to which Senior Sister? I warn you, Jasper, you’ve had your fun, but if you refuse to destroy him then you will get destroyed in turn.”
Like most bullies, Jasper recognized a threat when he heard one and he totally submitted by nodding so hard it seemed like his head might fall off.
Ding! Ding! Ding!
It was the notice that the fight should start!
Everyone focused on the platform. They knew that Dray wouldn’t likely beat him, but that wasn’t what they were waiting to watch. They wanted to see Riven get humiliated by Dray. A rank one giving a rank two necromancer a hard time!
Immediately after he heard the sound, Dray had condensed his aura into a single lashing point inside himself. By unfurling it, he could generate an instant powerful force that would propel him, giving him the speed that he was known for. He almost felt pity for Riven.
His eyes fastened on Riven, and immediately as the sound went off, the world seemed to slow around him. He forgot everything and just focused only on Riven.
But.
But where is Riven?
He didn’t take his eyes off him, but Riven was suddenly replaced by a smudge of shadow that was dispelling in the air. Alarm, fear, and surprise rolled inside him. This had never happened before. He lost sight of his opponent?
Dray slowed down and suddenly jerked his body to the side as he felt something, but it was already too late. Something collided with his head, a sharp pain blinded his eyes, and he was forcefully slammed into the ground.
Bam!
“Wait… what!!”
Riven stood above Dray, his right foot casually pressed at the back of the boy’s head. “Well, that was fun.”
The students exploded! Especially the rank ones because to them, Riven had simply disappeared and appeared behind Dray. They didn’t see anything happen.
Most of the rank twos were surprised just as well. They saw blurring shadows, but it was almost too fast for them to grasp.
“Did Riven use some kind of foot technique?” they wondered.
Only the truly strong among them saw that there was no technique, just straight-up speed. And they understood that if Riven wanted to cause fatal damage to Dray, he had all the time in the world.
Even the rank threes couldn’t help but reevaluate Riven in their minds.
But no one cheered. Instead, they looked at Tong, who had a pleasant expression on his face. He casually said, “It is expected, of course. The gap between rank one and two is there for a reason. We really can’t count this as anything. We can’t even learn any pointers from this.”
Jasper’s heart was beating fast, and in his mind he thought, “… finally… he’s gained my interest… I’ll properly bully him now…”
But Riven couldn’t stop himself as he helped Dray up. He smiled at Tong. “On the contrary, there’s a lot to learn, and the singular thing is that me and Dray attacked each other immediately. There was no extra dallying around.”
Riven’s tone was soft and pleasant, but each word hit Tong like a nail to the head. His face flushed and he looked a second away from jumping Riven. His eyes flickered to Kivara and the instructors before he relaxed. He inclined his head in a jerking manner. “Of course, Riven.”
Jasper didn’t need to be told twice before he climbed the platform. He cracked his hands and aimed a glare at Dray, who was still thanking Riven for not breaking any of his bones. “Scram, little rat!”
Dray shivered and ran away from the place, but he whispered something to Riven before he disappeared. “Be careful.”
Jasper snorted. “Maybe you should have thought that over before you made a mess. Now that you are here with me, there’s nothing like being careful.”
Riven studied the boy. They should be the same age, or one of them is slightly older. “What type of practitioner are you?”
“I have the Force Sigil. But what type? You’ll have to find that out yourself.”
Riven narrowed his eyes. This time he knew he had to be careful. His opponent wasn’t like the previous one. In fact, far from that.
He brought his concentration down to fully focus on Jasper, and he couldn’t help the way his heart was beating faster. Riven had been a practitioner and it hadn’t even been a week. He was eager to know just how strong he was compared to the others of his rank.
And now he’d been served the opportunity, and to get the chance to fight the strongest of the rank twos around!
“I want to find out! Student Jasper, please do your best!” Riven shouted with complete sincerity because only if his opponent truly put in his best could he measure himself against him.
Jasper’s eyes flashed. “You bastard!”
His body shook and trembled as if there was some kind of beast trapped beneath his skin that was about to make its appearance.
All the students that saw Jasper this way felt pity for Riven, the poor boy. Jasper was a complete asshole of a bully that he’d done it so many times he had lost his excitement for it.
So anytime he got excited like that, it usually ended badly for his targets and victims.
