Chapter 155: Hard lesson

The moment these people received the fellowship sigil, the base underwent massive changes. Ember has them bring certain resources, such as plastics and metals. Whether they had melted or not. All the things they thought were worthless, she asked for them. Even seeds that might have dried up due to the weather.

She placed them in the space and had the CE analyze what was useful and what wasn’t. The useful things were then sent to the Forge to be rebuilt or to be scrapped for their parts. Those parts would be brought to their purest form or be remolded into whatever the Eyrie needed at the moment.

This was both a mission to pick up new members and a shopping spree.

When all was said and done, they arrived at the Eyrie and freed them from the space. They didn’t have the time to bring them through a group at a time. But they could let them know how to leave in the future if they wanted.

Standing on a podium, Aiden introduced them to the Eryie.

“I’m sure you all understand what kind of place this is. We have also let everyone know what powers the base. We have spoken about those with special skills. Now, let me introduce a few people…”

He then introduced Adrienne, Ivan, Alex, Sarah, and Marcus. He introduced their positions and who they would need to go to for their specialized skills. Cassia also received an honorary mention since she was always with Ivan.

The speech didn’t last long, since everyone was still looking around. Because of the massive number of people, they had members become tour guides to send them to their rooms and show certain aspects of the base.

“Do you think they’ll be able to get along?” Adrienne asked.

“Where there are people, there are conflicts,” Aiden replied.

Ember sighed. She knew that conflicts would soon arise. She wasn’t sure whether she was looking forward to it or annoyed by it. Still, the first conflict came sooner than she expected.

A large holographic screen hovered over the square where they were still standing. Not only was the scene being played in the square. It was played in every corner of the base. Everyone was able to see the scene.

The scene was a man holding a woman at knife point. She was crying. From what they could see, he was trying to get her to do something. She refused. The man held the knife, attempting to stab her.

In the next second, the man doubled over, grabbing his head. They watched as his body twisted and writhed. They couldn’t hear his screams, but his pain was evident. Before long, he stopped screaming, and his body stopped moving.

Next, everyone’s mouth opened. The man didn’t just die. Dying was normal. People die in the apocalypse every day. But in this instance, the man disintegrated. He turned into yellow particles that floated into the air and disappeared.

“Well, there it is. The first one to cause trouble.” Ember remarked.

Next, more and more screens appeared. These screens were violent. They were people hunched over, each of them had some sort of device in their hand. Whether it was a communication device or something else, no one was sure.

But just as the other man writhed in pain, so did they. In the end, they became golden particles just as the first man had.

On the screen, letters appeared.

[No one is to threaten or demand anything from another member of the Eyrie, whether it is their belongings, sexual favours, or otherwise. Anyone caught doing so will be dealt with and removed.]

[Betraying the base by contacting outside sources and sharing the secrets of the Eyrie will result in immediate purge.]

[Follow the rules, or face the consequences.]

Everyone saw the announcement and shivered. Those who had been here earlier than the others marvelled. They had never seen any such notice before. Were they that harmonious?

As for those who came later, some grumbled, others protested. They didn’t know this would be the consequence of betraying the base. If they had known, they wouldn’t have joined.

But they forgot, they read the contract. They saw there would be punishment, and even death was mentioned. But they refused to believe that the base could restrain them.

When they were in the military base, they got away with a lot. Now they expected to do the same here. Now, they were in for a rude awakening.

Ember smiled when she saw the message.

“Damn!” Marcus said. “But good. Now, I don’t have to worry too much.”

“We don’t, but there will still be people who try to circumvent the rules. Watch, there will be more of these displays.” Alex stated simply. “Especially when they think no one is watching.”

“Well, all we need to do is wait for the holograms. Someone might understand they can’t get away and stop. Then it will trickle down until they understand just how screwed they are.” Aiden shrugged. It had only been a few hours, but he was already exhausted with these people.

“Alright, just give me the report. Adrienne, what does inventory look like? Did we get anything good?”

“Nothing too outstanding. We were able to get some of the plastics we had lost. A few of the metals were used during the new upgrade. Anything that wasn’t used was placed in storage. We did get a few extra fruits. Their seeds hadn’t completely dried, so we were able to get a new food source.”

Aiden nodded. And so the report continued. Each person gave their own account of what was and wasn’t affected because of the arrival of so many newcomers. By the time they finished the report, more than an hour had passed.

The seven decided to take a break. They felt there wouldn’t be much time for rest with the number of people in the base now. So, they needed to take breaks when needed.

And they were right, for the next few months, the troubles would come one after the other.
