Chapter 96: True Paths Devil
At the age of 3,300, a group of gods called him “True Paths God.” Ian said nothing, but the name spread.
At the age of 3,450, he saw a piece of the past in a pool of still water. It was a memory of his first fight. He smiled.
At the age of 3,600, Ian lost again to a Devil. But this time, his ki did not break. It had lasted longer, and it bent the Devil’s blade.
At the age of 3,750, Ian taught three small gods how to hold their minds steady. One of them would later save a realm.
At the age of 3,900, Ian walked through the space between worlds. He saw words float by. One said, “Almost.”
At the age of 4,001, his ki showed a new line. It looked like a path of light and dark mixed. He could not follow it yet.
At the age of 4,100, Ian fought a Devil again. This time, it was close. He lost, but the Devil gave him a nod. That meant more than words.
At the age of 4,200, a young god asked, “Are you the real one?” Ian looked up and said, “No. But I am still walking.”
At the age of 4,234, Ian stood on a cliff. His True Paths Ki began to improve again.
At the age of 4,235, Ian spent his days walking across a quiet land filled with dust and soft wind. Nothing happened, but he enjoyed the peace.
At the age of 4,250, he helped a tree god remember its name. The god cried for three days.
At the age of 4,300, Ian gave a sick bird his ki. The bird became a sky beast and flew for the first time in a hundred years.
At the age of 4,400, he saw a crack in the sky. He did not fix it. He only watched. The crack closed on its own.
At the age of 4,510, Ian sat on a cold rock and listened to two stars talk in whispers. He did not understand their words, but his mind felt lighter after.
At the age of 4,600, he walked into a dead realm. It had no life, no light, no sound. He stayed for a month and left a small fire behind.
At the age of 4,700, Ian saw a small god get attacked by beasts. He saved the god but said no words. The god ran off without thanks.
At the age of 4,805, Ian wrote a name in the air. The name was not his. The letters burned for a while and then vanished.
At the age of 4,900, he stood on a hill and watched two True Gods fight. He did not join. He did not move.
At the age of 5,000, the Grand Devil appeared. She looked the same as before. She said nothing. She threw a black spear that stabbed Ian in the chest.
He died.
Then he came back.
At the age of 5,000 (again), Ian opened his eyes. The Grand Devil stood over him. She said, “This is the way Devils are made. You are now a Devil. A Devil Attendant. You will guide one who has just risen.”
Ian did not speak. He stood and felt the change. His ki was heavier. His blood was thicker. His body was colder, but strong.
At the age of 5,001, he met the new god he was told to guide. The god’s name was Jow, God of Rubber. Jow was loud, bright, and always moving. Ian followed him without a word.
At the age of 5,050, Ian began to learn the ways of Devils. They did not pray. They did not serve. They watched. They acted only when needed.
At the age of 5,100, Ian learned Devil Ki was not just power, it was a path. A path of stillness, control, and sharp truth. His own ki began to shift again.
At the age of 5,150, Ian’s True Paths Ki broke and reformed. It grew darker, deeper, but not evil. It became True Paths Devil Ki.
At the age of 5,200, his bloodline changed. It now carried the mark of True Paths Devil Ki. Every breath, every thought, every strike held that power.
…
The air shattered like thin glass as the three Devils landed before Ian, each one wrapped in a red aura that boiled the ground beneath them. One held a flaming axe. Another floated with six arms and blades of wind. The last had no face, only a wide mouth breathing smoke.
Ian didn’t move.
He stood barefoot on black stone, hands relaxed at his sides. A long, dark coat, smooth as shadow, rippled around him. His eyes, silver with faint rings of violet, didn’t blink. Veins of light snaked under his skin, pulsing with a slow, steady rhythm.
A single horn curved from the left side of his head, like an unfinished crown.
“Three of you,” he said quietly. “That’s not even half a warm-up.”
The Devil with the axe roared and swung down, splitting the air in two. Ian didn’t dodge. He raised his hand and caught the axe blade between his fingers. Metal screamed and cracked.
The Devil blinked.
Ian’s fingers squeezed, and the axe shattered like brittle candy.
“First mistake,” Ian said. “You thought weapons could matter.”
The six-armed Devil came next, spinning with sharp wind blades like a storm made of razors. Ian stepped forward, walking through the slashes as if they weren’t there. One blade hit his face. It broke.
A palm struck his back. He didn’t turn.
“You’re scratching my coat,” Ian muttered. “I liked this one.”
“You bastard! What has Adam taught you to become this strong!?”
The third Devil, the one with the wide mouth, howled and spat a beam of black fire. “Adam is really a good teacher. But don’t be too confident. Eat this!”
Ian raised a single finger. The fire stopped mid-air. Then it curled back, hitting its owner square in the chest. Smoke Devil flew back and crashed through two hills.
“Two mistakes now,” Ian said, stepping onto a floating stone, “You thought numbers would help.” And certainly, I won’t reach this point without my teacher,” he admitted with a smile.
The wind Devil screamed and launched a flurry of thin white needles. Ian opened his hand. The needles stopped, frozen in the air. He flicked one back. It hit the Devil’s shoulder and sent him spinning into the ground.
The axe-wielding Devil charged again, fists burning this time. Ian side-stepped, grabbed the Devil’s face, and slammed it into the ground. Once. Twice. On the third, the ground cracked.
“You’re Devils,” Ian said. “Not clowns.”
The three tried to regroup. Smoke curled. Wind howled. Fire raged.
Ian yawned.
Then he appeared behind them.
No flash. No sound.
Just presence.
He placed a hand on each of their heads, pressing them down like misbehaving children.
“You call yourselves Devils. I call you warm-up dolls.”
A burst of violet-black ki exploded from his palms. The three Devils hit the ground again, deeper this time, forming a crater shaped like a broken crown.
Ian stood in the dust, arms crossed.
His coat had not moved.
His eyes glowed faintly.
And the horn on his head shone brighter than ever.
“Next time,” he said, turning away, “bring someone I won’t forget in five minutes.”
“Damn it!”
The Three Devils slumped to the ground, groaning in pain with their face filled with a sense of loss.
Ian checked his status.
