Chapter 106: The duel with the Great Ones
Furthermore, in the hands of a lower-ranked tamer or hunter, its full might couldn’t be displayed.
With his magic power capacity of over 2000 units that was too terrifying for a person with a peak iron rank soul to possess, he could only conjure five to six fireballs reaching temperatures above 2000°C.
Only in the hands of someone whose magic power reached into the hundreds of thousands could its true, devastating potential be unleashed, but to have that much magic power — even for Ray — was impossible unless one’s soul had reached the Black Gold Rank.
“You think you have the capability?” the Great Ones snickered, charging toward him.
Swhoosh!
The air boomed as their massive frame blurred forward, every step leaving behind deep craters in the floor as they bridged the gap between them in a flash
Whoosh!
Their lance swept horizontally, tearing through the air with enough force to split the ground, threatening to separate Ray’s head from his shoulders.
He ducked low, dodging it.
The lance went over his head.
In the same fraction of a second, the Great Ones struck again.
Ray reacted before the attack was made.
Flames burst from beneath his feet, propelling his body backward as the lance came crashing down from over his head.
It smashed into the space he’d been standing in, carving a deep trench through the black stone. He dodged it by a hair’s breadth.
The Great Ones had struck twice in a single second. Ray had responded with even greater agility, evading both attacks.
I’m faster, he thought.
’He’s faster and he moved before I attacked. He can predict what will happen a second or two in advance,’ the Great Ones realized at the same time, their mind working faster than humanely possible. ’He has used four abilities so far. He must possess the most terrifying type of taming seal. A divine rank seal. He must not be allowed to live on.’
Before the dust could even rise from the impact of the Great Ones’s staff hitting the floor, Ray extended a hand.
A column of high-temperature fire erupted from his palm.
The Great Ones raised an arm to block.
Fire struck metal — the hall filled with choking smoke.
When it cleared, the Great Ones stood completely unharmed. The armor they wore was extraordinary. Even flames surpassing 1200°C couldn’t melt it.
“If level 1 flames aren’t enough,” Ray muttered, “then how about this?”
Four wisps of incredibly hot fire snaked from his fingertips, fusing into a single fireball no larger than a baby’s fist. He hurled it toward the Great Ones.
At first glance, it didn’t look half as threatening as the massive column of fire that the Great Ones hadn’t bothered to dodge. But when its heat reached them, the Great Ones immediately changed their mind — they moved aside, unwilling to block it head-on.
From its heat alone, they had discerned its temperature, realizing it was around a 1000 degrees higher than the column of fire.
Over 2000°C. Such fire could melt even their armor; taking it head-on was suicide!
’He was holding back,’ they realized, feeling bitter in their heart. Ray was turning out to be more terrifying than he thought.
’Do they think my attack can be dodged?’ Ray snickered inwardly, willing his Level 2 Fireball to chase after them.
The fireball curved sharply, taking a sudden left turn midair, almost catching the Great Ones by surprise.
They leapt back and threw their lance at it.
BOOM!
The fireball destabilized as the lance pierced through it, exploding violently and filling the hall with dust and smoke.
BAM!
In that same moment, Ray’s fist smashed into the Great Ones’ helmet. While they’d leapt away from the explosion, he’d lunged straight toward them. His fist was metallized and coated in a layer of the most dangerous Azure Winds he could manifest. Add in the effect of his Consecutive Lucky Shot trait, and that punch struck with the force of a natural disaster.
The impact was devastating.
Not only did the Great Ones’ helmet cave inward, even their skull beneath visibly dented!
“Not bad,” Ray muttered. “But not enough to kill. I need to hammer it again and again until their entire head is flattened like a pancake.”
Fists carrying the force of a mature storm rained down, giving a free makeover to both the helmet and the head of the Great Ones.
“Ahhhhh!” the Great Ones roared furiously. “You vicious bastard! Die at once!”
They stomped once, and the ground beneath Ray fractured. Dozens of black lances shot upward, each one sharper than a legendary blade that could cut through steel like mud.
Ray had seen it coming, however. He jumped, dodging them.
“You aren’t the only one who can change the trajectory of his attacks!” the Great Ones snarled, twisting their wrist. The deadly lances chased after Ray’s figure. “You’re in midair—no platform beneath you! Let’s see how you dodge them all!”
“If there’s no platform, I’ll just make one.”
Azure wind gathered beneath his feet, forming a glowing square tile. He stomped hard on it, propelling himself past the lances and shooting straight toward the Great Ones.
They recalled their lance and thrust it toward him in a blur. Ray released a burst of high-intensity flames from his body, pushing himself aside at the last second. Using the same technique, he blasted himself towards the Great Ones, his enchanted fist streaking toward their head.
The Great Ones tilted their badly dented head just in time, narrowly dodging the strike.
Ray smirked. This is exactly what he was going for. He clenched his fist. A sharp gust of azure wind burst out. Wind Cutter—or so he called it.
The compressed air shot out like a crescent blade, slamming into the already damaged helmet, slicing through it effortlessly before continuing on without slowing down in the slightest.
A clean cut.
The Great Ones’ head with the unusually sturdy helmet attached to it was severed from their body, falling to the ground with a dull metallic thud.
