Chapter 138: Mission completed
Ray burst out with all his strength, eager to test himself against what was said to rival a Silver-ranked powerhouse.
A volley of black fireballs flared into existence around him, orbiting like miniature suns of destruction.
As the ancestral spirit charged, Ray unleashed them all at once.
Each projectile hit its mark. The creature, brainless and bound by command, didn’t even attempt to dodge. Kalen, watching from behind, sneered at first—he believed nothing could pierce the spirit’s force field, said to be sturdier than steel.
But that sneer froze on his face the next second.
The black flames born from the blasts ate away at the translucent barrier like acid melting flesh, latching onto the spirit’s form beneath.
The air filled with a sound that made the blood run cold—a guttural, distorted roar, half bestial, half human. The spirit thrashed violently, its charred hide splitting and sizzling as black fire crawled across it, eating it alive from within.
It was a sight of raw horror. A being forged by blood and magic, now writhing like a pig being roasted alive.
Ray’s gaze hardened, the reflection of the burning monstrosity dancing in his eyes. The ground trembled under the weight of the spirit’s agony. Every step it took melted the earth, every swing of its enormous arms tore through the air like a hurricane.
Still, the black flames clung stubbornly, crawling up its limbs and burrowing into its body as if alive. The creature’s once-blinding aura was dimming by the second, patches of its bone armor crumbling away into ash.
Kalen’s mind blanked. He had heard tales of the Ancestral Spirit’s invincibility, that even silver-ranked beings struggled to harm it. Yet this human, this bronze-rank, was burning it down piece by piece.
“No… impossible…!” he muttered, his trembling hands digging into the dirt. “That’s the Ogre Ancestral Spirit! A manifestation of pure wrath. In can’t be destroyed by mortal flame!”
“You don’t know what’s possible.” Ray said. He charged forward, his Warhammer drawn back, black fire coiling around it. When he swung, the air itself warped, the blow carrying the weight of annihilation.
The impact struck the spirit square in the chest.
A thunderous crack split the night as the monster’s body convulsed, the black fire detonating from within. Light spilled through the cracks in its form before it exploded into a storm of ashes and blood mist.
Ray stood still for a moment, the black flames around his Warhammer fading into faint embers. The air reeked of scorched blood and burnt earth. What remained of the Ancestral Spirit had already turned to dust, carried away by the night wind.
Behind him, Kalen lay motionless, barely breathing. His eyes were wide, pupils quivering with disbelief. He tried to lift a hand, but even that simple act was beyond him. His body, drained of blood and vitality, looked like dried parchment stretched over bones.
Ray walked over slowly, his boots crunching against the charred soil. He crouched beside Kalen, staring at him with cold, detached eyes.
“It’s over.”
Kalen’s lips twitched. “You… you can’t… the Ogres— they’ll—”
“They’ll fall, just like you,” Ray said flatly.
He raised his Warhammer one last time. The weapon glowed faintly, a dim, sinister pulse of power. With a single downward swing, he crushed Kalen’s skull into the ground.
Silence.
A familiar blue screen flickered before his eyes.
[You have killed a Peak Bronze Ranker.][You have gained 100,000 EXP.]
Ray’s eyes flicked to his current experience bar. The moment the numbers updated, another line appeared beneath it.
[Total accumulated EXP: 150,000.]
He exhaled through his nose. It wasn’t an enormous leap in power — but it was satisfying. A traitor dead, a dangerous mission complete, and the Tower’s vengeance finally delivered.
The crimson mists dissipated.
A flash of white light surrounded him as his body began to dematerialize, signifying the warp device of the tower was pulling him back into the tower from planet Vidiria.
Since he had killed the traitor and the mission was all about killing the traitor, there was no need for him to stay in Vidiria anymore.
The same could be said for Evermore.
They reappeared moments later inside the Tower’s teleportation chamber.
The marble floor shimmered beneath their boots, glowing faintly with the energy of the portal. The emblem of the Tower floated midair — a vast eye surrounded by radiant light. From its gaze came the mechanical voice of the Tower’s system.
[Mission Complete: Hunt the Traitor – Kalen Voss][Reward: 100,000 Enlightenment Points]
Evermore’s eyes sparkled with awe. “It’s finally over…” she whispered softly, glancing at Ray.
He nodded once, stepping down from the platform as the light faded.
She hesitated for a moment before walking up beside him, fingers fidgeting slightly. Her expression was complicated — grateful, hopeful, but also faintly guilty.
She knew full well she hadn’t done much. Her only contribution was locating the traitor’s path using her foresight. Everything else — the tracking, the ambush, the battle, and the kill — had been handled by Ray alone.
And yet… she couldn’t help hoping.
Ray turned his head slightly, catching the look in her eyes. “What?”
Evermore smiled nervously. “I just—”
Before she could finish, he opened his inventory menu. A few taps later, a golden glow transferred between them.
“Here.”
Her eyes widened.
“Your share. Thirty thousand Enlightenment Points, as agreed.”
“You— you’re serious?”
Ray smirked faintly. “I said I’d split it. I’m not the kind to go back on my word.”
For a moment, Evermore just stared at the screen, watching the digits roll upward in disbelief. Then, all at once, she broke into laughter. “I’ve never earned so many Enlightenment Points so easily!”
Before Ray could react, she threw herself forward, hugging him tightly and planting a quick kiss on his cheek.
Ray blinked, caught completely off guard.
He took a step back, rubbing his cheek awkwardly. “What was that for?”
Evermore giggled, hands behind her back. “I was just… happy you didn’t backtrack. You’re not like the others I’ve worked with. Besides—” her lips curved teasingly “—I find you kind of cute, so I kissed you. If you think I wronged you, you can always make it even.”
Her tone was light, but her eyes were deep, shimmering with unspoken challenge.
Ray’s gaze lingered on her longer than he intended. She wasn’t just beautiful — she was dangerously charming. Her platinum hair shimmered faintly under the Tower’s light, and her slim figure, wrapped in a silver combat suit, radiated both grace and temptation.
She was the type of woman any man would dream of having — confident, sharp, and untouchably alluring.
Ray wasn’t a fool. He had fought monsters, waded through blood, faced horrors that could drive ordinary men mad. But even he wasn’t immune to temptation.
It had been weeks since he’d rested, weeks since he’d felt anything other than battle rage and exhaustion. His body screamed for relief — for warmth, for something to remind him he was still human.
And now, that reminder stood right in front of him.
He stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. Evermore blinked, surprised by the sudden proximity.
“Ray?” Evermore whispered, her voice trembling with a mix of surprise and desire as she searched his eyes.
But before she could say more, he tilted her chin up gently with a finger.
Then, without a word, he kissed her. It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t hesitant either—a firm, deliberate press of lips that left no room for misunderstanding. For a few seconds, the world around them ceased to exist.
When he pulled back, Evermore’s eyes were wide, her breath slightly uneven.
“Now,” Ray said quietly, his tone calm but edged with warmth, “we’re even.”
Evermore’s cheeks flushed hot, her body buzzing from the contact. She stepped closer, her hands fidgeting with the hem of her robe. “Ray. I want more.” Her voice dropped to a husky plea, eyes locking onto his with raw hunger.
Ray smiled teasingly, “More of what?”
“More of you,” she replied.
Ray grabbed her and went to the residential district of the tower through one of the metal pathways.
There they rented a room.
As soon as they entered it.
Ray’s gaze darkened, a slow smile curving his lips. He cupped her face again, pulling her into another kiss, this one deeper, his tongue slipping past her lips to tangle with hers, tasting her sweetness.
She moaned softly, pressing against him as his hands roamed down her sides.
Breaking the kiss, he tugged at the ties of her robe, letting it fall open to reveal her bare skin beneath.
The fabric pooled at her feet, exposing her full breasts, nipples already hardening in the cool tower air.
Ray’s mouth descended, capturing one peak between his lips.
He sucked hard, tongue flicking over the sensitive bud while his hand kneaded the other breast, pinching the nipple until she gasped. Switching sides, he lavished attention on the second, grazing it with his teeth, drawing out whimpers as her fingers threaded through his hair, urging him on.
Her pussy throbbed with need, wetness gathering between her thighs as he devoured her like a man starved.
