Chapter 17: Residence
After eating, Ray returned home to wash up and change into a new sets of clothes, wearing the enchanted armor underneath to hide it from sight so as to avoid unnecessary trouble.
Even back in the 21st century, there was no shortage of cases where people were killed because they went out wearing valuables like gold and jewellery.
This era was far more deranged, lives were cheap, the law never sided with the weak, slaves and commoners were held in contempt by the people in power and subjected to inhumane treatment, treated indifferently or worse.
For an armor worth over 100 silvers, even a knight could play dirty.
While Ray was strong enough to kill an initial stage iron rank beast tamer and escape from an intermediate stage iron rank beast tamer with the help of the Deep Blue Armor, against knights that were a level or two higher, he was not much different than a fish on a chopping board.
Thus, it was in his best interest to be discreet when it came to flaunting his wealth.
“It was worth trading the majority of the Mutated HarpoonHead’s head corpse for the Deep Blue Armor. It’s spectacular.”
The Deep Blue Armor held the beauty of the ocean with a reflective surface that would shine like pearls under light, whether it be from the sun, the moon, or man made. However, depending on which spectrum of light it was exposed to, it would shine differently.
A demonic core was embedded in its chest section. If it were to be damaged or destroyed, the Deep Blue armor would lose its speciality and become a normal piece of iron-ranked armor with no special effects.
The Blue Deep armor was surprisingly thin but sturdy. He punched it using half his strength and barely made a mark on it.
He didn’t know what material it was made of, but it stuck to his skin like a shirt drenched in water, making it easier to go unnoticed when worn underneath a full sleeve shirt and a hoodie.
“The next thing I should do is change to a better location.”
His current residence was located in the worst part of the town where the poorest of the poor lived, it was also the place where the majority of the crimes like murder, kidnapping, theft, rape, and so on, take place.
Furthermore, he lived in an old and uncared for building that was so dilapidated and tilted, it seemed like it would collapse when the next hurricane hits the town.
Worst of all, the kitchen and bathroom was shared amongst the few residence of this building. Mold had started to grow in them as they hadn’t been cleaned and ventilated since the original owner was thrown in jail. Ray wondered if the other resident hated cleanliness and hygiene.
“Even beggars wouldn’t want to live in a place like this.”
It was no suprise that he hadn’t been kicked out despite being behind on rent by two whole months. This was no place to live in.
“I don’t want to get buried beneath rubble in my sleep, so I have to change to a better place.”
Besides, he didn’t like this place as it was just a tiny room, the size of two one person beds.
When the original owner and his father were alive, they used to share this space, they were really poor. However, although they lived hand to mouth, seeing each other alive and well and sharing a single meal at the end of the day never failed to bring a smile to their face. Unfortunately, the original owner’s happiness was stolen from him by the mine owner, and then he was killed by him too.
“The mine owner deserve to die!”
However, although Ray had become strong enough to rival an intermediate stage iron rank beast tamer, he knew he was no match for the mine owner as he was close to becoming a Grand Knight, and he had a lot of guards.
If he wanted to kill him, he needed to grow a lot stronger, and he needed to do it fast.
After all, the mine owner could come looking for him to kill him any day.
Ray wanted to strike first and cut the thread that tied them.
Thud, thud, thud!!!
Suddenly, loud banging rattled the crooked door of his home as if someone was trying to break in.
“Hey, I know you’re in there. You better answer the door, or you’ll regret it.”
Temperance’s voice suddenly came from outside the door
Temperance was the owner of this building. It hadn’t originally belonged to her; she had inherited it from her husband, who died under mysterious circumstances a few months after marrying her.
Ray could only guess that she poisoned him to death to loot his wealth and bribed the officials to get away with the brutal murder of her husband.
He went over and opened the door.
A charming and vivacious redhead in a red dress stood outside. She had a pretty face and a slender figure. Her curves… were not bad, and she had dressed herself up well with makeup and perfume. Her presence filled the air with a pleasant scent.
Not unlike a seductress, she could dull minds with just a smile, but Ray felt not an inch of attraction towards her, for he knew her heart was black like poison.
“Finally willing to answer the door.” Temperance glared at him like a tigress, her hands resting on her hips.
“What are you here for?” Ray asked, his voice devoid of warmth.
“You owe me two months’ rent,” Temperance said rudely. “When are you going to cough it up?”
She hadn’t managed to find a new tenant in recent months. Otherwise, she would have long thrown his things out.
“How much is it?” he asked.
“90 coppers,” she replied.
“I only have silver coins,” he said.
At the mention of silver, her tone and expression shifted slightly. “I’ll go and bring change.”
“Hurry up. I don’t want to spend another moment in this rundown place,” Ray said.
“You’re thinking of moving out? Did you hit the lottery while you were gone for two months?” Temperance asked, unaware he had been plotted against and locked up in jail.
“Think what you like.” Ray kept his words short as he had no desire to engage in pointless conversation with a disgusting and heartless woman like her, who would marry a man only to kill him and steal his property.
Temperance left.
Soon, she returned with a group of ferocious looking men.
The group was made up of her other tenants, her boyfriends, and her bodyguard.
Ray watched with a mocking gaze as they surrounded him and threatened him to hand over all his silvers.
In response, he thought, “Truly a newborn calf is not afraid of the tiger.”
These people were staring death in the eye, yet they were still behaving arrogantly.
Utterly laughable!!!
