Chapter 118: 118 Werewolves.
An ominous ripple pulsating around the place. A black wind howled, hurling shockwaves that sent chills down everyone’s spine.
At the centre of the chaotic phenomenon floated something hidden in plain sight, beneath the glaring sun.
Jin stepped forward to block the incoming winds, shielding Lucya behind him. With a pale face, Lucya reached out to her own throat, feeling suffocated by the oppressive might of the mud.
*Thump!
A loud heartbeat reverberated across the vast space. The ground beneath him trembled as the beat quickened.
Thump, thump, the beat kept getting louder before a massive black magic circle spread until it covered all the sky.
The black mud was as big as a human head, then expanded into a giant ball, spilling black liquid onto the ground.
As soon as that liquid touched the ground, the plant wilted, and the soil turned barren and cracked, as if the liquid had sucked the life out of nature itself.
’What the hell is happening?’. Jin gritted his teeth and lifted his gaze to see that the black mud began to convulse.
Its round shape deformed, wriggling as if something was trying to break free.
Then, a sharp metallic sound ripped apart a cloth, shrieking across the dungeon’s fifth floor.
A limb appeared, hands and feet, before a figure broke apart from its cocoon. It was a beast floating above.
“Impossible!?”.
Jin heard the handsome senior mutter, his voice was distant and filled with intense shock.
The beast had a human physique, with four limbs covered entirely with jet-black fur down to its back and a shadow-like whip behind its butt.
A pair of red eyes stared at Jin and the other students, who stood stiffened. Its elongated mouth spread to reveal its jagged teeth.
“Human, it’s been a long time.” The beast’s voice was hoarse, but it showed that the monster before them was unlike any they had ever seen.
’No way, a King-Rank monster’. Jin clenched his fists and saw that the monster was gone as he blinked.
“You reek of nature”.
The beast’s deep voice came from behind Jin, and he jerked his neck to see the beast standing before the petrified Iris. “And I hate nature,”.
’No!’. Jin’s emerald eyes flared as the pores around his skin opened up. He tapped the primal mana in the atmosphere, letting his body greedily sucked it.
[Elemental Enhancement activated]
A burst of violent aura blasted the air around him, raw power surged within his veins, nourishing his flesh and bones.
With a step, Jin arrived next to Iris, holding the beast’s right wrist, which almost hit Iris’s solar plexus.
“Hoo, a human…!”.
A ’boom’ resonated across the field, watching the beast’s body flung far away after receiving Jin’s punch.
“Iris, pull back with the other student”. Jin didn’t turn his back, keeping his eyes locked on the beast covered by smoke dust.
“But, Jin, what about you?”. Iris clutched Jin’s sleeves, her voice trembling.
“I will follow behind you, so…”.
“Aaaahk!”.
A scream of anguish broke everyone’s daze. They turned to the source to find the beast holding a student’s hand.
“Aaaahk, my arm…”. Sereth lay on the ground, holding his severed left hand. Red blood smeared on his gym clothes, bathing him in the pool of death.
Jin vanished and reappeared beside the beast, floating with his left leg bent backward. With a kick, he sent the beast away like a catapult and landed on the ground with a grim expression.
“Hurry and leave this place”. Jin’s scream snapped everyone from their petrified state, seeing one of the students lose a hand.
“You’re pretty strong for a human”.
From the raised dust, ominous footsteps rang, showing the beast with no damage on its body.
“It reminded me of that time”.
The beast’s expression twisted in a hideous grin. Its elongated mouth spread wide as he tossed the hand and gulped it easily.
“That’s better”. The beast patted its belly, then turned its attention toward Jin. “My name is Lycanthros, the proud Moon-eater Werewolves. Humans, state your name”.
’It seemed I had his full attention’. Jin summoned his katana and held it in his left hand.
“My name is Jin Midnight”.
An emerald aura flooded the area surrounding him, before it got sucked back and formed a thick layer of mana that enhanced his physique.
“Nature power, huh?”. Lycanthros narrowed his red eyes.
Both stood still, as if the world obeyed their will.
In a heartbeat, they vanished with the ground cracked open where they once stood.
Jin’s blade clashed with the beast’s claws in sparks and shockwaves that rattled the surrounding environment.
He tilted his body to the left, dodging Lycanthros’ other hand, then pivoted and used the momentum to swing his katana to sever the werewolves’ neck.
Spark scattered along with the resounding clank when both blades and claws clashed.
A continuous ’clank’ with a reverberated boom shook the atmosphere around the fifth floor.
The atmosphere hummed in prayer, to stop the clash this instant, but it kept getting intense as the black magic circle above started to glow maliciously.
“Jin?”.
Iris’ green eyes stared at the battlefield ahead. Her expression was resolute and intended to draw her bow, but a strong grip on her left wrist stopped her midway.
“Silvia, what are you?”.
The Elven girl tried to retaliate, but the grip tightened to the point of pain.
“Let’s go”.
Silvia’s voice was calm, yet she was exhaling a chilling mist that gathered around her body. Iris’s eyes widened, and she glanced at the silver-haired girl. Her eyes were devoid of any emotion.
The girl before her was not the one she used to see. Silvia’s figure, which exudes a cheerful and graceful nature, has long gone.
Her figure became ethereal and lethal, like a deadly blizzard in the winter, sending shivers down Iris’s spine.
“Let’s go and evacuate the other students first”.
Silvia lowered her tone and glanced at Lucya, who was on four, watching the battle blankly.
“Leave, Lucya, to me”. Iris nodded and darted off toward Lucya’s place.
The Elven girl crouched down and pulled the princess’s shoulder, jolting her petrified body.
“Lucya, are you alright?”.
“Y-Yeah”. Lucya stammered but managed to reply despite her trembling lips.
Lucya looked at the field far away, recalling the last time she saw his back protecting her.
His shadow breathed warmth to her throbbing chest, giving her tattered mind a security that put her mind at ease.
Now that the pillar was gone, Lucya softly whispered his name. “Jin, is he going to be okay?”
Iris shifted her gaze toward the boy, their movement blurring. It was impossible to follow with her eyes, even though she was a ranger, proud of her speed.
The Elven girl gritted his teeth and shook her head sideways. “Let’s go, we must evacuate first”.
“But, what about Jin?” Lucya’s blue eyes shook. Her sight focused on the battle ahead, with clenched fists as she refused to accept reality.
“Don’t worry; he can handle it.” Iris helped the princess stand up, wrapping a hand around Lucya’s waist.
’Hold on, Jin’. Iris bit her lips; determination lit the ember in her heart. ’I will not make the same mistake twice’.
On the other hand, Lucya, who stood up, glanced at the glowing magic circle above.
It was adorned with intricate and complex runes from the age of God’s language.
However, thanks to Granny, who always lent the girl books and grimoires from ancient times, filled with complex runes.
Lucya managed to decipher the magic composition and what it triggered.
’A spell to summon an eclipse?’. Lucya walked away from the spot, leaving the fifth floor. ’Why would the beast need that spell?’.
Lucya’s staggered steps kept matching her pace with Iris. Her mind was swirling with thousands of possibilities, trying to find a solution and determine the enemy’s plan.
A loud explosion behind her incited both girls to turn their backs and see what had happened, but they had to prioritize the other first, then come back with a new solution to break this desperate situation.
’Wait, for me, Jin. I’ll definitely come back here’. Lucya’s fingers dug into her palm, leaving a red trail of blood that dripped to the ground.
