MIDWORLD
IN A BAR
A lot of people gathered in the bar, men and women alike, occupying every inch of space; some were forced to sit simply because there was nowhere left to stand.
Everyone was attentive, seated in a circular fashion like thieves trying to plan how they were going to rob a bank.
But this—this was different. Their goal was the same as ever: to fight back against the goddess, a mission they knew was near impossible. Yet the hope of being free blinded them to the truth standing in plain sight.
The goddess was unstoppable.
Not even with all their skills combined would they be able to lay a dent on her. That was how far beneath her their abilities truly were.
“The first plan is for us to infiltrate all the clans. We take the bases from the captains. That way, we get all the time capsule pills they have stashed in their bases.”
A man—maybe in his forties—enlightened the rest. He carried himself like the leader of the operation, and from the way the others received his explanations, that was clearly the case.
“Everyone we need is here, all members of the other clans too—except for the Grid Lions,” a woman interjected.
“You couldn’t find anyone who would go against the goddess?”
The man shook his head, confusion tightening his features at the unexpected hurdle in their genius plan.
“None. Truly, they are the most loyal clan in Midworld.”
“But we need the time capsules in the Grid Lions if this plan is going to work—”
“I have something to say about that.”
A familiar voice echoed from behind the group, breaking their concentration cleanly in half.
They turned toward the sound.
And there he was.
Alexander—the other highlight of Midworld. He wore the same Grid Lions uniform from the last game, concealed beneath a black robe that swallowed his body whole. He was somewhere he shouldn’t have been, so it was ideal that no one could see his uniform—or worse, his face.
Their doubtful eyes glowed with hope at the sight of him. He was the Lord of Hope; it was only natural that hope followed his presence. More than that, he was one of the Grid Lions—the answer to their problem had just walked into the room the moment they needed it.
“I know you hate the goddess. I hate her too. But let us not allow anger to make us lesser thinkers.”
He shot the words at them calmly. Some members of the rebellion lowered their heads as the fear they had suppressed came rushing back. Others stood in judgment, hating Alexander for daring to speak such restraint aloud.
“Have you come here to help us or to mock us?”
“Trust me, I am helping everyone here. Please, tell me—what was your initial plan after you got those capsules?”
Alexander lowered his gaze slightly in curiosity, yet even that subtle movement felt intimidating. He challenged their leader with sight alone.
“We would stop playing the goddess’s games. She would be forced to come down—like a child trying to fix her toys when they stop working.”
“And then?”
“Ahm… we would capture her and force her to send us back.”
“Pathetic. Do you even hear yourself talking? How can you capture the goddess if you can’t even defeat a captain? For God’s sake, you can’t even defeat me.”
“Be careful with your tongue—you might just bite it.”
“It’s the truth. You’re welcome to try.”
Alexander spread his arms in a welcoming gesture, his tone unwavering.
All eyes in the room shifted to their leader. Alexander had issued an open challenge, and the kindest thing their leader could do now was answer it.
He shook his head in hesitation.
Then he accepted.
The crowd split into two sides, creating a narrow pathway for their leader to face Alexander. The room had no proper space, yet somehow, in that moment, they forced space out of the walls themselves.
Within seconds, the two stood face to face, staring at one another as rivals.
Until—
[Thunder Dash Level 2]
[Super Punch Level 3]
The leader called out his skills. Swarms of violent electricity enveloped his arms and legs, crackling like an approaching storm.
“I’ve passed all four games with this combo. I don’t care who you are—you can’t defend yourself when I’m in serious mode!”
His eyes locked onto Alexander like a hunter on prey, silent intimidation radiating from him.
Clap. Clap.
Some of his supporters began to cheer. He was their leader after all—the strongest among them.
“Take this, stubborn child!”
He rushed forward, moving in a zigzag pattern. At that speed, no one could even follow his movements.
When he closed the distance, he unleashed his super punch straight at Alexander’s face—only for Alexander to parry it effortlessly with his palm.
The collision pushed Alexander back a little, but the leader lost his balance.
Immediately, Alexander drove a kick into the man’s chest.
The leader flew backward, crashing into the very crowd that had cheered for him.
Silence.
Everyone was startled.
Alexander had been right all along. If they followed their leader’s plan, they would be sheep marching toward sacrifice.
Fear leapt into their souls. Realization struck deep. Survival instinct devoured every other thought.
And Alexander saw it instantly.
That was exactly what he wanted them to feel.
Exactly what the goddess had instructed him to invoke in the script.
Everything had unfolded as she said it would.
Truly, there was no chance any of them could defeat her.
“I have a better idea—one that will require us to risk our lives only once. Think of it as the final game for everyone.”
Chatter erupted throughout the room, voices colliding in frantic discussion.
One game only.
That meant they wouldn’t have to endure all the others. It felt like a free ticket back home—or even into another world as super-abled humans.
“And that’s not the best part,” Alexander continued. “I already spoke to the goddess. She agreed.”
“She agreed?!”
They shouted in unison.
Happiness flooded the bar. People hugged each other at the scent of victory that had not yet arrived. Their minds raced with images of glory, wealth, even the number of wives they would claim.
But one thought shattered the celebration as quickly as it had begun.
If one game was all it took to leave Midworld, they could hardly imagine how brutal that single game would be.
“So what’s the game?” someone finally asked.
Alexander smiled brightly—like a flight attendant calmly explaining procedures to nervous passengers.
“We all know from countless movies, mangas, and webnovels back in the world of the living that demons are not creatures to bargain with. And according to the latest demon situation, those who join this game will be given all possible training and power. Together, we will wage war against the demons and kill every single one of them. After that, each of us will face the ultimate choice.”
His eyes narrowed slightly, like a villain carefully setting a plan into motion.
Inside the bar, faces shone with eager smiles, thrilled by how straightforward the mission sounded.
Reincarnate into another world with the powers we gained here—
Or
Return to the world of the living.
