Chapter 79: The Man Who Came
The air thickened in an instant. What had moments ago been a hall filled with happy souls turned into a room packed with tension.
“Shit. She gave out our location. I told you not to trust her!”
Kasa shouted at Jamie like an older brother scolding the younger one who hadn’t listened and had now brought disaster upon them. He stood in an alarmed stance, glaring at Sandra as if she were already an enemy.
Jamie, however, remained still, his eyes fixed calmly on the commander.
Sandra looked equally surprised. The sudden arrival clearly hadn’t been part of her expectations either. But the tide had already turned against her, and judging by the atmosphere in the hall, there was no chance she could repair the situation now.
She understood that painfully well.
“Everyone go to safety.”
Jamie addressed the scientists as the Genkis began pouring through the broken entrance, crawling across the hall and dominating the space with every passing second.
The scientists hesitated briefly, thinking they should join the battle. But the thought faded quickly. Their strength was in their minds, not in fighting.
They rushed out of the building instead.
“I believe we haven’t been properly acquainted.”
Captain Ron stepped forward with composed elegance.
“My name is Captain Ron, leader of the Grid Lions clan. Your death would mean something truly wonderful to us.”
Jamie didn’t respond.
He simply stood there, focused—watching not just the captain, but the hundreds of Genkis surrounding him.
We’re outnumbered. If I fight the captain, that leaves Kasa against all those Genkis. And Sandra… with the way she’s looking, she’ll probably side with him.
His mind ran through calculations in seconds.
Jamie turned his head slightly toward Kasa.
“Sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
“This.”
“[ARKLAW]”
“Scatter!”
Boom!!!
A violent surge of power exploded outward.
Just like before, the blast hurled everyone away—Kasa, the Genkis, even Sandra—as if a truck had smashed through the hall.
Bodies slammed against the outer walls as the force expelled them from the building.
Captain Ron himself was thrown out through the broken entrance, landing hard on the tar road outside.
“Now that’s better.”
Jamie floated down toward him like an angel descending to judge the soul of the dead.
With that single move, he had reset the battlefield. The moment of surprise was gone.
Captain Ron groaned softly as he rose back to his feet.
Then he noticed something surprising.
All the Genkis had been destroyed. Arklaw had reduced them to ash instantly.
Jamie had leveled the battlefield.
“So this… is how the legendary Arklaw feels.”
Ron glanced down at his suit.
The golden chains decorating it began to glow, shining brightly as if reflecting sunlight.
He stretched his hands forward.
Slowly, the chains lengthened.
What had once held his suit together now slipped free, extending farther and farther until they finally touched the ground.
It was a magic technique—those golden chains weren’t just decoration meant to make him look elegant.
“Why is the goddess sending you instead of coming here herself?” Jamie asked calmly. “It’s not like her to miss opportunities like this.”
“She took a small detour, if you don’t mind.”
Ron smiled slightly.
“But don’t worry. I’ll make up for her absence… and kill you myself.”
He spoke casually, clearly trying to steer Jamie’s thoughts away from that topic.
The chains began piling onto the ground.
Thin golden links that looked harmless at first glance.
But gold itself was durable—and when enhanced with magic, those chains became something far more dangerous.
I knew it. Something’s off.
Jamie stood without a defensive stance, watching carefully.
His attitude confirms it.
“May I ask for your undivided attention?” Ron said lightly. “I prefer opponents who don’t hold back.”
“[Grid Chains: ON]”
Instantly, the chains lifted into the air.
Instead of falling under gravity, they floated freely, surrounded by golden energy.
His technique is different from the other captains.
Jamie observed carefully.
I can’t sense any clear magic flow from him. Is he suppressing it… or is this simply how his ability works? Even the magic itself shows no elemental affinity.
The chains continued spinning in the air, faster and faster.
The only thing I can read about him… is those chains.
“[First Grid Format: Beast — Snake]”
The chains suddenly twisted together.
Segments fused, weaving themselves into the shape of a massive serpent.
Under different circumstances, it might have looked like a beautiful piece of art.
Except that one glance told you it could kill you the moment it struck.
“RUSH!”
FWWWUU!!
Three serpent heads launched toward Jamie at blinding speed.
Fortunately, Jamie tracked every movement and dodged instinctively.
The chains slammed into the ground instead, shattering the concrete with overwhelming force.
But the attack didn’t stop there.
When the chains struck the ground, fragments broke off from the main body—forming smaller snake-like chains.
Then, in the next instant, they sprang upward again.
Like boomerangs.
Each of the three heads repeated the same motion.
Two chains suddenly whipped through Jamie’s body.
Slash!
Blood sprayed across the ground as his eyes twitched in pain.
The chains struck him with crushing force and hurled him backward into the construction site.
Jamie’s eyes widened.
Ever since his training with Castor, no one had even managed to lift him off the ground with an attack.
Except Captain Ron.
It was the kind of adrenaline-filled fight Jamie had been waiting for.
Because this man’s skills were unlike anything he had experienced before.
…
After Arklaw exploded, Kasa and Sandra landed on the far side of the abandoned construction site.
Since Kasa had braced himself at the last moment, he wasn’t as shaken as Sandra.
“You’re going to kill me one of these days with that stupid attack!”
He shouted toward the building, assuming Jamie could still hear him.
He prepared himself to fight the Genkis that had been inside.
But after scanning the area for a few seconds…
There were none.
Only drifting ashes remained.
Cough! Cough!
Sandra stumbled nearby, emerging from outside the fence.
She looked worse than Kasa—clearly having taken the blast harder.
“Hey, you.”
Kasa called toward her with a threatening tone.
Sandra leaned forward, hands resting on her knees as she breathed heavily.
The moment she saw him, annoyance filled her face.
She rolled her eyes like someone who had just run into an irritating ex.
“I’m going to beat you up.”
Kasa tried to look intimidating, squeezing his face and stretching his lips into what he clearly thought was a serious expression.
In reality, it looked more comedic than threatening.
Sandra felt a laugh rise in her throat but forced it down.
Breaking his confidence by laughing would be the worst thing she could do.
She stood upright and slowly raised both hands in surrender.
“The pleasure is all mine.”
She spoke calmly, though there was no intention to fight in her voice.
Her eyes confirmed it.
No hidden tricks.
No knives ready to strike like she had done with Bray.
Just an elf… surrendering.
“Huh?!”
Kasa whined loudly, sounding more like a frustrated child than a warrior.
“What?! Pull out your weapon and let’s fight!”
