Chapter 90: Ritual For Captain 2
“Fight, fight, fight!!”
The audience screeched in enjoyment, the overall vibe of the event sounding more like a barbaric butchering than a fight for the top, a fight that hadn’t yet begun, since none of the two had started the fight. It wasn’t just a development; there was reason behind their waiting.
When Alexander turned his gaze to right, so did Pascal. At this point it was more like a mimic of each other than bare technique. That alone was enough to make Alexander feel troubled, like there was something else within the fight he was missing.
[Sonar wave]
A wind of magic, not visible to the naked or even magical eyes, flowed on the fighting grounds. It moved too softly—like a mosquito when it lands on your skin. You wouldn’t know it was there until it bit you.
The technique’s job was simple: to uncover if there was any trap hidden in the ground. After the wave had finished scanning, it was clear there was nothing unusual going on.
Suddenly something happened that none of the people had ever hoped would happen.
Alexander went back into a normal standing form, like every human does. His posture didn’t show any intent to fight.
“I give up on the challenge, Pascal wins his your new Captain”
He shouted loudly so that every individual in the arena heard him.
Silence fell heavily on the crowd. They were all startled by what they had just heard. It was something unheard of in the history of a fight to the top—the reigning champion just bailing out like that.
In that instant, almost instinctively, discussions began to form within the audience, each talking to the next on their seats with confusion written all over.
“So what does that mean”
“Pascal is the new captain that what it means”
“Alexander is weak, he is a scared cat, I don’t see why the goddess chose him anyway”
“I wanted pascal to be the be the captain but why do I feel so”
Discussions in the form of whispers and murmurs diffused into the middle of the ground.
Pascal’s forehead was completely covered by wrinkles of annoyance. The card Alexander had just played was something he couldn’t anticipate in a million years.
“Your are not backing out now, we need to fight to the death”
He pointed at Alexander, screaming with annoyance in his voice.
“You wanted to be the captain didn’t you, so you got it, just as you wished. Or wasn’t that your motive In first place”
Alexander turned the story upside down, revealing the knife Pascal had hidden under the carpet. Wanting to kill another member was deeply against the rules of the Grid Lions, with the punishment being so severe that it would make playing through the Games a walk in the park.
Pascal’s rampage stopped mid-form as he caught his threatening words in his mouth that would have revealed his true intentions.
The idiot almost slipped out his secret. No worries, this is the best-case scenario for me. If I killed him, they would only hate me more. And if the story ever got to the rest of Midworld—that I killed my own teammate because of the authority of a captain—it would be devastating. Killing one elf was already enough; the suspicion was bad enough. It wasn’t smart to add on top of those allegations.
Alexander smirked as he pondered. Somehow, using his intellect, he had found a way out of the trap Pascal laid for him.
“I wish you all the best Pascal, you and those backing you… the Authority will come to my family anyway, it’s not like my uncle is dead”
Alexander turned back, walking toward the door that fighters used to exit through. His words were like hitting the nail on the coffin, making Pascal even more furious.
“Your will become my new lord of hope”
The words echoed inside Pascal’s mind, pushing him to continue with his main motive. The words came like a broom into his mind, cleaning off any sense or hold he had on his emotions.
Some of the audience started to rise from their seats. The fight was over before it even started. Nothing else was to be seen other than the crowning of Pascal as the new captain. But the blade that appeared in Pascal’s right hand said otherwise.
Sowwsh!
He rushed at Alexander, whose back was completely turned, clueless of the attack coming from behind.
Everyone’s eyes widened. Pascal leaked a bloodlust none of them had seen from him before. With every passing millisecond, the distance between them grew smaller as he lifted his blade, aiming to cut off Alexander’s head like old-age executions did.
And when he was about to cut Alexander’s neck.
Swing!!!
The blade slammed onto Alexander’s neck, the sharp edge hitting him clean. Then Clack!! The blade broke in half, exactly at the point it struck Alexander’s neck. The knife went flying against the wall, and Alexander’s body remained unharmed.
“All my life I’ve never failed to cut a person’s body before, I trained all my life for that exact purpose alone, but why why did my blade break in half like a stick? Just who the fuck is this guy”
He was puzzled to the very bone. While confused, he was able to see Alexander’s face—a villainous smirk painted all over it as Alexander dropped the revelation on him.
“You fell for it”
That’s when it hit him. He had launched an attack on Alexander with the full intention to kill—and he didn’t do it in some enclosed space. He did it in the presence of more than 200 people, more than enough witnesses to launch a case against him.
Little by little, the plan started to fill in place in Pascal’s mind. Even if backing out from the fight might have favored Alexander, since he escaped the hell Pascal had prepared, people in Midworld would now think that Alexander had known Pascal planned to kill him all along and had turned the narrative on the aggressor.
He fell to his knees, realizing he had just been played. Other members who had supported him initially began hiding among those booing him, changing sides as fast as they had originally chosen him.
Two officials descended on Pascal—one a woman, the other a man—surrounding him like a fugitive.
“You have been arrested according to the first in Section A of clan rules that strictly warn of any actions that may be committed to remove a fellow classmate’s life”
The woman enlightened him, saying it so beautifully you would even wonder if she had been a cop in the world of the living.
Pascal lay hopeless, with no other option in his mind, but there was still something under his sleeve.
Goddess help me!
“Your have no entitlement to call me, you were just my pawn”
“Aaah what do you mean”
The words startled him like he was having a stroke.
“I wanted to test how Alexander would react to that kind of situation, an exercise for him, and by the looks of it I think he is ready. Don’t worry, you will suffer knowing that you served me well”
