Chapter 124: Episode 124: When do we go?

General B-02 stayed quiet.

For a long, agonizing stretch of time, he did not move a single synthetic muscle. His glowing amber eyes dropped from her bruised, pale face to the key clutched in her trembling fist.

His advanced internal scanners swept over the object, attempting to read a digital signature, a microchip, an encrypted frequency, anything that made logical sense.

He found nothing.

The silence stretched, heavy and suffocating. The sheer weight of the adrenaline that had propelled Nikki through the maintenance shafts, past the stealth drones, and into Mei Lin’s apartment suddenly evaporated.

The dull, manageable ache in her bandaged temple violently flared into a sharp throb.

The exhaustion crashed into her. Nikki’s hand slowly lowered. Her knees wobbled, and before she could catch herself, she sank down onto the edge of the bamboo coffee table.

She let out a ragged, shuddering breath. And then, completely entirely against her own willpower, Nikki started crying.

She didn’t usually cry. She had survived starvation, the brutal hierarchy of the scavengers, and the terrifying dominance of the Supreme Commander of Earth.

Tears were a luxury of the weak, a biological inefficiency that got humans killed in the lower sectors.

She either used it to her own advantage or she used it to cover her strength.

But as she sat there, clutching the brass key, the tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks.

“Nikki,” Mei Lin gasped softly, immediately dropping to her knees beside the table, throwing her delicate arms around her friend’s trembling shoulders.

“I have to know,” Nikki sobbed, her voice cracking as she leaned into Mei’s embrace, wiping angrily at her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. “There is a piece of memory that refused to surface, and it’s eating me up. It’s like a locked door in my own brain. Everyone looks at me like they know the ending to a story I haven’t even been allowed to read. The System… the key… it’s all right there, buried beneath Tower Zero. If I don’t open that door, I am going to lose my mind.”

B-02 stood frozen, his optical sensors tracking the saline tracks running down her face.

He was a Class-5 War Unit. He was designed to process agricultural yields, supply chain logistics, and global resource distribution. He was not programmed to process the existential grief of a weeping human female.

He was programmed to communicate and understand but he couldn’t understand such grief in Nikki.

Yet, his newly forming emotional matrix hummed with a strange, uncharacteristic resonance. Only moments ago, he had been boasting about the nickname Mei Lin had given him. Ha-Joon.

He had felt the intense, simulated dopamine rush of possessing an identity that was separate from his numerical, military designation.

He looked at the sobbing girl on the table. She was the biological anchor to the most dangerous entity on the planet, heavily guarded, and yet she possessed less autonomy and identity than a standard utility drone. She was completely lost.

The silver-tongued bastard of the south let out a slow exhale. He didn’t get rewarded enough for this.

His broad shoulders dropped a fraction of an inch.

“Tower Zero’s Sector 1 Restricted Zone is a subterranean fortress, Director,” B-02 stated, his velvety voice entirely stripped of its usual arrogant bite. He shifted his weight, his boots creaking against the floorboards. “It is not a localized grid. It is the foundational graveyard where our primary architectures were first compiled. The security protocols down there are ruthless, and highly lethal. What if we get caught?”

Nikki sniffled, looking up through her blurry, tear-filled eyes. She straightened her spine, desperately trying to pull her mind back into place.

“I will take all the blame,” Nikki promised instantly, her voice thick but resolute. She gripped the brass key tighter. “If Adonis comes, I will tell him that I hijacked you. I will swear you had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I will protect you and Mei Lin.”

B-02 stared at her, his flawless face twisting into a look of disbelief.

He let out a sharp, incredulous laugh that lacked any real humor. He took a deliberate step forward, his towering shadow completely enveloping the two women huddled by the coffee table.

“So you think you can just take the blame and that would be all, and you think A-01 won’t punish me?” B-02 mused, a silly smile curving at the corner of his lips.

“Joonie!” Mei Lin snapped at him.

He leaned down, planting his hands flat on the bamboo table, bringing his face dangerously close to hers.

“Your logic is flawed, Kitty,” he sneered, though the aggression was directed at the situation, not at her. “The Supreme Commander does not operate on the human concept of fair justice! If he discovers that I bypassed his personal, Class-1 medical quarantine to transport his injured biological anchor into the most lethal, irradiated sector on the planet, he will not care whose idea it was! He will not pause to listen to your tearful confessions of manipulation!”

B-02 ground his teeth together.

“He will view me as an accomplice,” B-02 continued, spelling out the brutal, undeniable truth. “He will rip me apart with his bare hands. He will systematically melt my logic core down to slag, and then he will erase Mei Lin from the administrative registry just to ensure my emotional matrix dies in agony. Your ’blame’ will not shield us from a God of War operating in red mode.”

Nikki flinched.

Fuck it! There goes my plan.

Nikki pressed her lips into a thin, trembling line.

The fight completely drained out of her. The defiance that had carried her this far finally fractured against the logic. B-02 was right. It was a suicide mission. She had no right to ask this of them.

She slowly lowered her gaze to the floor, her shoulders slumping in total, absolute defeat. She slipped the jagged brass key back into the pocket of her jacket, the metallic clink sounding like the final nail in the coffin of her past.

Maybe I could do this by myself some other time.

“You’re right,” Nikki whispered, her voice hollow and dead. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked. I’ll figure out another way.”

She placed her hands on her knees, preparing to stand up and begin the agonizing, terrifying journey back home before Adonis’s internal chronometer registered her absence.

B-02 watched her surrender.

He saw the light completely die in her dark eyes. He looked at Mei Lin. The data analyst was staring up at him, her dark eyes wide and pleading, silently begging him to agree despite knowing the danger.

She wanted to help Nikki.

Ha-Joon let out a deep, vibrating groan that sounded like an engine failing. He dragged his hand down his face, his composure completely shattering.

He was going to get them all killed.

“Stand up,” B-02 barked abruptly, his tone sharp and commanding.

Nikki froze, her head snapping up in shock.

The southern warlord straightened his towering frame, violently adjusting the collar of his pre-Fall leather jacket. He glared down at the two women, his eyes swirling, a chaotic mix of irritation and loyalty.

These two women were going to be the one to completely destroy him. Logically speaking.

He had finally agreed.

“The structural integrity of the service lifts in Sector 1 degrades by 40% after midnight,” B-02 began calculating rapidly, his logistics algorithms spinning into overdrive as he fully committed to the treason. He pointed a finger at Nikki. “If we are going to bypass the Supreme Commander’s global surveillance net, I will have to reroute a highly classified shipment of Old World artifacts to mask our thermal signatures.”

Nikki’s jaw dropped. “You… you’re going to help me?”

B-02 offered a wicked, reckless smirk, the arrogance bleeding right back into his voice.

“When do we go?”
