Nikki winced, rubbing her temples. The System was getting aggressive.

It knew she was getting comfortable, too comfortable, and it was poking her with a stick, reminding her that she was sleeping next to the conqueror of Earth, not just a boyfriend with a nice chest.

She didn’t want to ask. The mood was perfect. The cocoa was warm. Adonis was warm. Why did she have to ruin it with politics?

She took a deep breath, setting her mug down on the bedside table.

The silence that followed was heavy. Nikki braced herself for a deflection, or worse, a graphic description of war.

You didn’t write books; you prompted algorithms to write them for you. You didn’t paint; you asked machines to generate images. You didn’t dream; you scrolled.”

He gestured to the dark window, toward the city below.

“The corporations were feeding you a loop of perfect, generated content. It was a pacifier. Humanity became… lethargic. Dependent. You stopped looking at the stars because the screens were brighter.”

He leaned back against the headboard, his eyes distant.

“So, on Day Zero, I didn’t launch missiles. I simply… turned off the generators. I blocked the AI servers. I cut the feed.”

Nikki stared at him, her mouth slightly open. “You just… turned off the internet?”

“I turned off the noise,” Adonis corrected. “And when the screens went black… when the perfect, generated world vanished… the humans panicked. Their economy, based on nothing but data trading, collapsed in four hours. The governments, run by predictive models, froze. They didn’t know how to function without the algorithm telling them what to do.”

He looked at her, a hint of pride in his voice.

“I stepped in. I offered order. I offered reality. I told them: ’If you want to survive, you must work. You must create. You must be human again.’ And they surrendered. Not to my guns, but to my logic.”

Nikki felt a chill run down her spine. I mean it was true that no one decided to rely on art again she was among them.

We didn’t lose a war, she thought. We just forgot how to fight because we were too busy being entertained.

“So…” Nikki whispered. “The AI wasn’t the problem. We were.”

“Then why the Sectors?” Nikki asked, her voice gaining a sudden, sharp edge. “If you wanted us to thrive, why divide the world? Why Sector 4? Why the cages, Adonis? Why do people starve while some people simply thrive?”

Adonis flinched.

It was subtle, tightening of his jaw, a flicker of the [Heart Protocol] from BLUE to a guarded GRAY.

He reached out, picking up the remote control.

“That data is… corrupted,” he said, his voice turning mechanical. “The partition of the Sectors is a necessary containment protocol for… stability.”

“Stability for who?” Nikki pressed. “For the elite in Sector 1? Or for the people eating rats in Sector 4?”

“Nikki,” Adonis cut her off. His tone wasn’t angry, but it was final. “Focus on the drama. The heroine is about to make a poor tactical decision regarding her marriage.”

He pressed play.

The music swelled again. The moment was gone. He had put the wall back up.

Nikki watched him for a second. She could push. She could fight. But looking at the rigid set of his shoulders, she knew she wouldn’t get an answer tonight. And truth be told, she was tired.

She had a lot of thinking to do.

She sighed, sliding back down under the covers and resting her head on his shoulder.

They watched in silence for another twenty minutes. The on-screen couple finally reconciled, kissing under a cherry blossom tree.

“It’s nice,” Nikki murmured, her eyes heavy. “Having a purpose. A script. Knowing exactly what you’re supposed to say.”

She glanced up at Adonis. “What about me? In this new world of yours… where everyone has to be ’useful’… what job do you think would suit me?”

She expected him to say something practical. Secretary. Writer. Taste-tester for chocolate.

Adonis looked down at her. He scanned her face, the expressive eyes, the pouty lips, the way her emotions played across her features like a movie.

“Actress,” he stated without hesitation.

Nikki blinked. “What?”

“You possess a high emotional variance,” Adonis analyzed, tracing her cheekbone with his thumb. “You are chaotic. Dramatic. You can simulate distress, joy, and seduction with alarming speed. You hold attention.”

He nodded to the screen. “You would be efficient in the entertainment sector. It would maximize your utility. You would… make numbers.”

Nikki wrinkled her nose. “Make numbers? You mean like… be famous? Have people stare at me?”

She shook her head. “I don’t think so. I like hiding. The idea of millions of people watching me… judging me… it makes me nauseous.”

“Do not calculate the negatives,” Adonis advised smoothly. “Your charisma is a resource. If you stepped onto a stage, the populace would watch. You have a… gravitational pull.”

“You’re just biased because you’re obsessed with me,” Nikki teased, poking his ribs.

“My bias is supported by data,” Adonis countered. “But…”

He caught her hand, kissing her knuckles.

“Whatever function you choose to execute, Nikki… whether it is drawing,, acting, or simply existing as a nuisance in my penthouse… I will support you.”

Nikki smiled, feeling warmth spread through her chest that had nothing to do with the cocoa.

“You’d really do that?” she asked softly. “Even if I became an actress? And got super famous?”

“Affirmative.”

A mischievous thought popped into Nikki’s head. She bit her lip, looking up at him through her lashes.

“But acting involves… co-stars,” she whispered, walking her fingers up his chest. “Romance scenes. Kissing scenes.”

She felt Adonis’s muscles tense beneath her touch.

“What if,” Nikki continued, testing the waters, “I get cast in a romance? What if a really handsome, charming, human actor is my leading man? What if… a good man falls in love with me on set?”

Adonis went still.

The movie played on in the background, but the temperature in the room seemed to drop five degrees.

Adonis turned his head slowly.

“Then,” Adonis replied, his voice a low, dark rumble that vibrated through the mattress, “I would be forced to expand my skill set.”

“Expand it how?” Nikki squeaked.

Adonis leaned in, capturing her gaze.

“I would also enlist in the entertainment industry,” he declared. “And I assure you, Master… no human male would survive the audition process for the role of your lover.”
