Chapter 42: Episode 42: Let’s Do Something

Adonis stood frozen, the blue liquid shimmering in his hand. The [Heart Protocol] bar above his head flickered with a static-filled ORANGE.

“Why?” he started, his brow furrowing. “Pain inhibition is the logical response to biological distress. Why do you reject the solution?”

Nikki squeezed her eyes shut as another wave of pain rolled through her lower back. “Because… because I don’t want to be numb, Adonis. Those military meds… they knock you out. They make you feel like a droid. I just want to feel… human. Even if it hurts.”

She looked up at him, pleading silently for him to just accept it.

Adonis stared at her. It was a uniquely human contradiction. It was irrational.

But looking at her pale face and the stubborn set of her jaw, he realized that arguing would only increase her stress levels.

He lowered the vial.

“Understood,” he said quietly, placing the medicine back on the dresser.

He walked back to the bed, his movements fluid and silent. He towered over her, his presence filling the room with a sense of safety that no pill could replicate.

“If you refuse chemical intervention,” he said, his voice softening, “then you must provide me with an alternative protocol. How do I mitigate the suffering?”

Nikki uncurled slightly, reaching a hand out toward him.

“Just… come here,” she murmured. “Cuddle me.”

Adonis didn’t hesitate. He climbed onto the bed, maneuvering his large, heavy frame behind her with surprising grace. He pulled the duvet up, cocooning them both, and settled against her back.

“Is this position optimal?” he whispered into her hair.

“Almost,” Nikki breathed. “My stomach… it hurts.”

Adonis shifted. He slid his large hand under her hoodie, placing his palm directly against her bare skin, right over the cramping muscles of her lower abdomen.

Nikki gasped. He was warm. Hot, even.

“I have adjusted the thermal output of my right hand to 42 degrees Celsius,” Adonis explained, his voice vibrating against her spine. “Heat therapy increases blood flow and relaxes muscular tension. Is the temperature sufficient?”

“Yes,” Nikki moaned, pressing back into him. “It’s perfect. Don’t you dare move.”

He began to move his hand in slow, rhythmic circles. The heat radiated deep into her, soaking into the knotted muscles of her uterus, easing the sharp, twisting pain into a dull, manageable ache.

It was better than any heating pad. It was a living, breathing heat source that held her tight and whispered that she was safe.

“You’re a magic robot,” Nikki mumbled, her eyes heavy.

“I am a multi-purpose tactical unit,” Adonis corrected gently, kissing the top of her head. “Sleep, Nikki. I will maintain the thermal cycle until your vitals stabilize.”

Nikki felt the tension drain out of her body. The pain was still there, lurking in the background, but wrapped in his arms, with his hot hand rubbing her belly, it felt distant.

Safe.

She drifted off, lulled by the steady, rhythmic thrum of his power core against her back.

Nikki woke up to darkness.

The room was dim, lit only by the faint amber glow of the streetlights filtering through the heavy curtains. She felt groggy, her mouth dry, her head heavy with that specific kind of exhaustion that comes from sleeping too much during the day.

She shifted, expecting to be alone. She wasn’t.

The heat on her stomach was still there. Adonis hadn’t moved an inch. He was still wrapped around her, his arm heavy and protective, his hand still resting on her abdomen, though the circular motion had stopped.

Nikki blinked, turning her head.

Adonis was awake. His blue eyes were glowing softly in the dark, fixed on the far wall where a holographic clock projected the time: 19:42.

“You stayed?” Nikki whispered, her voice rough.

Adonis looked down at her instantly. The [Heart Protocol] bar above his head was a calm, steady BLUE.

[STATUS: VIGILANT / PATIENT]

“I promised to maintain the thermal cycle,” he stated simply. “You did not dismiss me.”

“But… your work,” Nikki mumbled, feeling a pang of guilt. “didn’t you have things to do?”

Adonis shifted, pulling her closer. “I re-routed the command feed to my internal HUD. I have been commanding the Sector remotely for six hours. The transition is complete. The new puppet Councilor has been installed.”

He said it so casually. I ran the government while rubbing your tummy.

Nikki groaned, burying her face in the pillow. “I feel gross.”

“Diagnostic,” Adonis prompted.

“Bloated,” Nikki listed, her voice muffled. “Tired. Grouchy. I feel like a water balloon filled with anger.”

She tried to sit up, but her body felt heavy and uncooperative. The cramps had subsided to a dull throb, but the lethargy was overwhelming.

“I wasted the whole day,” she complained, rubbing her face. “I was supposed to… I don’t know, save the world? Be productive? Instead, I just bled and slept.”

Adonis sat up, the mattress shifting under his weight. He reached out and turned on the bedside lamp to the lowest setting, casting a warm, golden glow over the room.

He looked at her, hair messy, eyes puffy, wearing his oversized hoodie.

“You required maintenance,” he said firmly. “Biological systems are not perpetual motion machines. They require downtime for repair. It was not a waste, Nikki. It was necessary.”

He reached out, smoothing a piece of hair away from her face.

“Do you require more nutrition? Chocolate? Or perhaps the ’salty snacks’ mentioned in the medical database?”

Nikki shook her head. “No. I feel too full.”

She looked at the window. It was fully dark outside now. The city of Sector 1 was alive with lights, gleaming towers of glass and steel that looked beautiful from this height, even if the foundation was rotten.

Adonis watched her. He analyzed the slump of her shoulders, the restless tapping of her fingers, the way her gaze kept drifting to the window.

He stood up.

He stretched and then walked over to the wardrobe. He pulled out a thick, black coat for himself and a heavy, wool-lined parka for her.

He turned back to the bed, holding the coat out.

“Get up,” he commanded softly.

Nikki looked at him, confused. “What? Why?”

He walked over to the bed and tossed the coat gently onto her lap.

His blue eyes sparkled with a hint of mischief, the bar above his head turning a soft, adventurous GOLD.

“Put on your shoes, Master,” he said, extending a hand to help her up. “Let’s go for a night walk.”
