By the time the SUV glided back into the subterranean garage of the mansion. Nikki was practically sleepwalking.

They rode the elevator up to the penthouse in silence. Nikki leaned her head heavily against Adonis’s bicep, her eyelids fluttering shut.

“I wanted to do more,” Nikki mumbled into his sleeve as the elevator doors hissed open. “I was going to stay up. We were gonna… you know. The reward.”

“Your motor functions are currently operating at a twelve percent efficiency rate,” Adonis noted, an unmistakable ring of fond amusement in his low voice. He effortlessly guided her down the plush corridor. “There will be no rewards processed tonight, Kitty. Your only directive is rest.”

Nikki grumbled a half-hearted protest, but she didn’t fight him.

She dropped the giant pink bear onto the armchair in the master bedroom and dragged herself into the en-suite bathroom. She stripped off her clothes and stepped under the scalding hot spray of the shower.

The water felt divine, melting the lingering tension from her muscles and washing away the sticky residue of sugar.

She didn’t bother drying her hair completely. She slipped into a pair of tiny, comfortable sleep shorts and a loose tank top, emerging from the bathroom in a cloud of warm steam.
