If Nathaniel Nathan marries Vera Xavier, do you think she’ll let you live a life of comfort? Do you think she’ll persuade the Nathan Family to help Maxwell get his promotion?”

Rona Langdon’s expression soured. She knew perfectly well how she had treated Vera Xavier. In the past, Vera’s soft nature had made her easy to control, but ever since she ran away from her wedding, her personality had changed drastically, and she was no longer so easy to handle.

Just as Vera Xavier was getting ready for bed, she saw Cara Preston return to her room. She raised an eyebrow slightly. ’They must have reached some kind of agreement.’

The next day, when it was time for school, Vera Xavier saw that Cara Preston was wearing a light purple dress with her hair in two small braids. Gone was her dejected, grimy appearance from the day before; her face was radiant and full of life.
