Nathaniel Nathan’s gaze deepened as he watched her leave. ’She’s been different toward me since she hit her head this time. But I can still tell that deep down, a part of her is still resisting me.’

’The thought displeased him, but at least she wasn’t afraid of him anymore, and she didn’t take detours just to avoid him. That was already huge progress. He was just being too greedy.’

He won’t be back until next week.”

Vera Xavier replied sweetly, “Thank you, Grandma Dixon!”

Grandma Dixon gave a slight, meaningful smile. Vera took the hint and leaned in as Grandma Dixon whispered, “With your father gone, you need to be careful.”

Vera Xavier knew what Grandma Dixon was implying. She knew the old woman meant well and nodded lightly. “I know.”

“If you need anything, just shout. I’m right next door,” Grandma Dixon whispered.

Normally, she wasn’t the type to meddle in other people’s family matters, but her heart truly ached for Vera, and she utterly despised Rona Langdon. That was why she felt compelled to speak up.

Knowing Grandma Dixon meant well, Vera Xavier simply smiled and headed inside.

The front door was bolted. Cara Preston wasn’t back yet—she had probably gone to see Elise Langdon again. The pots in the kitchen were cold on a cold stove, and there was nothing to eat. Rona Langdon wasn’t home either.

’It was a brilliant move for Nathaniel Nathan to take me out to eat today,’ Vera Xavier thought. ’Otherwise, I’d have to light the stove and cook from scratch now.’
