When Master Nathan first took back a chess move, Vera Xavier figured she should let him, as he was her elder. She never expected him to get completely carried away, like a car with no brakes. As soon as she made her move, he would immediately take his back.

Eventually, she grew tired of it. She grabbed Master Nathan’s hand and declared, “Grandpa, no take-backs!”

Nathaniel Nathan chimed in from the sidelines. “I told you not to play chess with Grandpa. He’s a terrible sport. If you enjoy playing, we can have a game.”

Master Nathan huffed, “You little rascal, get out of here. Go focus on your tea.”

The game devolved into a complete mess. Vera Xavier was genuinely worn out by Master Nathan’s playing style. She never intended to win against him, but with him constantly taking back his moves, it became incredibly difficult for her to even try and lose.

When the game finally, painstakingly, came to an end, Master Nathan had won. He was all smiles as he said, “See? Vera is the thoughtful one!”

Nathaniel Nathan offered a rare smile at this outcome, feeling as though a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders.

When Vera Xavier went to the kitchen to help Lana Cheney with dinner, he sidled up to Master Nathan and asked, “So, what do you think of Vera?”

“An excellent girl. Strong-willed, kindhearted, and of outstanding character!” Fresh off his chess victory, Master Nathan couldn’t stop singing Vera Xavier’s praises.

Nathaniel Nathan looked at Master Nathan and asked, “Will she be able to get past my parents?”

“Vera is the one who saved my life,” Master Nathan said calmly. “And she’s the girl you’ve been pining for. Your father will be easy to win over, but your mother might be a bit more difficult. Vera’s family background is, well, what it is. You’ll have to put some effort in, my boy.”

“Your support is enough,” Nathaniel Nathan replied calmly.

“Don’t you dare underestimate your mother,” Master Nathan warned him. “But if Vera herself is exceptional, that will be a huge plus in her favor.”

Nathaniel Nathan’s brows furrowed slightly, his expression pensive.

On Monday, Nathaniel Nathan planned to drive Vera Xavier directly to school.

Today, the results from the monthly exams on Friday and Saturday were being announced. It wouldn’t be an issue for her to not have a schoolbag, since the class would just be going over the test questions.

Vera Xavier knew Nathaniel Nathan was a well-known figure at school and his car was far too conspicuous. So, she had him pull over and let her out at the intersection before the school. As she got out, he called to her, “Vera Xavier, remember what I told you yesterday.”

Vera Xavier gave him a bright smile and a nod, then strode toward the school.

Nathaniel Nathan watched her straight-backed posture and confident smile, his eyes filled with tenderness.

Vera Xavier entered the classroom empty-handed, and her classmates immediately started pointing and whispering. “She actually dares to show her face at school? Isn’t she afraid of the humiliation?”

“Exactly! I bet she got zeroes on everything again!”

“Someone should kick her out! She’s always dragging down the class average! She’s a disgrace to us all!”

Vera Xavier paid their words no mind whatsoever, calmly returning to her seat.

Cara Preston had already arrived. When she heard what the other students were saying about Vera Xavier, the corners of her mouth lifted in a slight smile.
