Cara Preston started crying right on cue. “Grandma, just because my sister gave you a radio, you’re defending her like this! She might be your biological granddaughter, but I’ve called you Grandma for eighteen years! Are all those years of family ties worth less than a radio?”

Grandma was stunned. She had been delighted when Vera Xavier gave her the radio, but Cara’s words completely soured the moment. The onlooking villagers all turned to stare at her. Thanks to her high standing in the village, they didn’t say anything nasty.

She said through gritted teeth, “Cara, what nonsense are you spouting?”

Sobbing, Cara Preston said, “You’re so biased toward my sister, and you still say I’m talking nonsense! Fine, there’s no place for me in this family anymore. I don’t want to live!”

With that, she tried to jump into the pond again, but Rona Langdon grabbed her in a tight hug. “My poor Cara, if anything were to happen to you, how would your mother go on living!”

Rona Langdon then pointed a finger at Vera Xavier and said, “Even though you’re my biological daughter, you’re so vicious! The Preston Family has no place for you! Get out! I never want to see you again!”

Vera Xavier had to admire their dramatic flair. ’With them carrying on like this, it’s become impossible for Zachary Preston and Grandma to speak up for me. If they did, they’d be accused of not accepting Cara Preston, of driving her to her death.’

She said slowly, “Even in a court of law, a judge gives the accused a chance to defend themselves. Isn’t it going a bit too far to convict me based solely on Cara Preston’s side of the story?”

“That’s because we know what kind of person you are!” Rona Langdon retorted.

Vera Xavier ignored her, instead turning to Cara Preston. “Cara Preston, are you really going to keep telling such barefaced lies?”

An eerie chill emanated from her, and her eyes seemed to see right through Cara Preston’s soul. Cara Preston had never seen such a terrifying Vera Xavier before and shivered involuntarily.

Rona Langdon glared at Vera Xavier. “You pushed Cara into the water, and now you’re scaring her! Vera Xavier, you have no conscience!”

“Everyone, may I say something?” Aaron Cheney asked.

All eyes fell on Aaron Cheney. He continued, “Since the sisters are each telling a different story, their words are just one-sided testimony and can’t be trusted. The only way to find out what really happened is to find another witness. Don’t you think that makes sense?”

Cara Preston’s gaze fell upon Aaron Cheney, and she suddenly felt a pang of nervousness. ’Aaron couldn’t have seen everything, could he?’

’But then she thought that was impossible. She’d looked around when she tried to push Vera Xavier, and there was no one there.’

And so, Cara Preston’s courage returned. “It was just my sister and me here. There was no one else around. No one can testify for either of us.”

“Who says?” Aaron Cheney said with a grin. “I was over in that bamboo forest trapping bamboo rats, and I happened to witness the entire thing.”

The color drained from Cara Preston’s face. Aaron Cheney’s family was also from this village, and he often came back to trap bamboo rats. On top of that, his father was the director of the Agriculture Bureau. Although he could be a bit mischievous, his good upbringing meant his reputation was quite solid.

She reached out and tugged on his sleeve, putting on a pitiful expression. “Aaron, you can’t just make things up!”

This was her signature move. But with her hair a mess, her clothes plastered to her body, and mud all over her, the pitiful act was simply disgusting.
