Shirley Forrest took the balm out of her schoolbag, only to see it was empty. “It’s all gone. I’ve been so busy with school lately that I forgot to buy more.”

Vera had no choice but to drop it, wondering if she should go out and buy some during the long break between classes.

Shane Caldwell glanced at her, then left the room. He rushed back into the classroom right as the bell was ringing and thrust a tin of medicated balm at Vera. “Found this on the street just now. You can borrow it.”

Vera saw that the medicated balm was clearly brand new and unopened. She said calmly, “You’re pretty good at ’finding’ things. Why don’t you go out and ’find’ another one?”

Shane Caldwell: “…”

Vera pulled two dollars out of her bag and placed it on his desk. “Thanks!”

Shane Caldwell stared at the two dollars, and his good mood vanished. He felt as if his innermost secret had been laid bare. His face flushed red, and he roughly pushed the money back toward her. “I told you, I found it on the street! I don’t need your money!”

Vera never liked being indebted to anyone, least of all someone as proud as Shane Caldwell. She simply tossed the money into his desk and said nonchalantly, “Then just pretend you found two dollars on the street.”

He wanted to say something else, but Juliana Taylor walked in carrying her lecture notes, so he had to let it go.
