Chapter 215: Immortal?
“She didn’t come, huh?”
“A WALKING CORPSE!”
Dante stared thoughtfully at the prisoner who arrived to feed him, ignoring Aza who was screaming in his ears. The prisoner was a woman who looked as pale as a corpse with dark black eyes and short black hair.
Well… maybe her skin wasn’t the only thing that made her look like a corpse.
She had a missing arm, a big chunk of her chest wasn’t there, revealing her shattered ribcage and her organs with some teeth marks at the edges of what remained of her chest, and her waist was frozen.
Obviously, that woman wasn’t Anastasia.
She was supposed to be a dead corpse!
“How are you alive?” Dante asked with puzzled eyes: “Why the hell did they choose you out of all people?! Are they blind or something? Did a beast brutally eat you alive or what?”
The woman sighed and said with a depressed voice: “A beast brutally ate me alive, but I survived somehow. You don’t have to concern yourself with that.”
“…”
Dante stared at her confusedly as she casually moved toward him with a plate, defying everything he learnt about common knowledge.
As if understanding the look on his face, she responded coldly: “Yes, I can move normally with half my body missing, and I can survive such a small wound.”
“Are you immortal?”
The woman shrugged: “Umm… maybe. I’m not sure myself. I’m not curious enough to test it. I may not like that, but I actually value my life. I was just a bit unlucky lately.”
“Unlucky, huh?” Dante nodded and asked: “Can you just make sure that your blood doesn’t spill on the food? I tasted blood before and it didn’t taste that good.”
The woman crouched before him and shoved the bread into his mouth with her bloody hand: “I’m sure my blood tastes better than this bread, so please eat silently. I don’t want to be here anyway. Also, please don’t curse me. I’m trying to survive peacefully in this place.”
Dante bit the bread off and gulped: “I miss the other woman already. She was more gentle than that. Also, if I can curse people, I’d have cursed Valor before you. You’re safe, I guess.”
After saying that, neither of them muttered a word as Dante let the woman feed him.
’I wonder what that demonic angel is doing… or is it angelic demoness? I’m not sure.’
“Demonic angel sounds better!” Aza remarked in Dante’s ears, leaving no room for argument.
’Demonic angel then.’
¢¢¢
’The choice is mine, huh?’ Sitting in her cell, Anastasia kept staring at the ceiling.
She and Charis hadn’t spoken a single word since their previous discussion.
There was some… awkwardness between them, to say the least.
Anastasia felt like she was a bit too harsh on Charis, and Charis felt too guilty to talk. Charis was now blaming herself for what happened to Anastasia until now.
That left Anastasia staring at the ceiling for hours to decide her next step. She left only to accomplish a simple mission of sorting the gathered minerals and returned to her thoughts.
’Should I do it?’
Anastasia felt like that wouldn’t be hard to do. She was already leaning toward the idea of being a bit lazy and caring about herself and Braham more than some strangers.
But as Charis said… if she accepted that idea, she wouldn’t be a charity angel anymore.
Everything she had accomplished since receiving the bloodline from her father and completing it with the help of Charis would be for nothing.
“I don’t know.”
If she decided to do that… would she even be the same person?
If she truly succeeded and fused the bloodlines, would she see Braham and the others the same way?
And what if she succeeded but not in the way she desired?
Her idea was creating the mindset of selective love instead of a universal one using some of Sloth’s ideas. At the core, it was a modified version of charity, but what if the opposite happened?
What if the demonic bloodline became the dominant one? Wouldn’t she just be more like a demon than an angel?
“I hate this…” Anastasia scratched her head violently, unable to decide what to do.
Thus, she decided to go to the first floor and wait for Braham to return.
She couldn’t go to his cell, so that was the best way to meet him again. She was certain that he was mining alongside Kael somewhere.
’He might take hours to return.’
Feeling bored, Anastasia walked to her closet and opened it, examining the items inside.
A mask, a suit, a rapier, a pickaxe, and a weird ball that was called…
’I think it was a “Grenade”? This invention is really weird and dangerous.’ Anastasia thought, remembering the explosive impact of that ball.
All it needed was a sliver of mana for it to activate. That small grenade could kill a Rank 2 being!
But among her items, her eyes were fixed only on a small syringe.
’Only half the cure remained.’ Anastasia held the syringe and examined the liquid inside.
It was a glowing green liquid, the same color as her veins currently.
The arrow in her gauge was already close to the red area, implying that the radiation level in her body was getting closer to becoming dangerous.
’I guess it’s time to reduce it slightly.’
Anastasia slowly moved the needle inside the hole on the collar. Once she felt that the needle touched skin, she immediately injected herself and pressed the liquid into her body.
The glow of her veins became fainter, and the level of radiation in her body decreased significantly until it reached the safe green area.
After pulling the needle back, the hole in the collar started leaking glowing blood, but Anastasia ignored it and the urge to scratch her neck.
That was simply rotten blood leaving her body. If she didn’t have a hole in her neck, the blood would have left her body as sweat.
Anastasia measured the remaining amount of liquid in the syringe.
’Less than 10%…’
That was one of the most expensive consumable items in this prison, and she had used over 40% of it in a few seconds.
That was really frustrating.
’I should buy one for Braham. I think I collected enough to meet the quota and buy one for him.’
Nodding to herself in satisfaction, Anastasia was about to return the syringe, but just then—
“PLEASE! ONLY A TINY AMOUNT! I WILL DO ANYTHING!”
—she was interrupted by the screams of a giant.
He was kneeling in front of a man with a syringe, his whole body glowing, and he seemed to be in intense pain.
And when she looked at her gauge, she understood the reason.
’It’s red…’
The radiation level in his body was so intense that he was shaking just from kneeling like that.
If he didn’t get the cure quickly, he would face a fate more horrible than death.
And a guard was staring at him sharply, ready to cure him at any moment and let him fall into the cycle of debts.
“Fuck off!” The man with the cure rejected the giant mercilessly: “Earn your own cure! Why should I give you something that I worked so hard to obtain? I had to mine alone in the dark for hours daily to get that. I almost died several times!”
“I’ll do my best to repay you… please.” The giant cried and continued begging: “I only want to decrease the radiation slightly before I head to the caves. I won’t survive with this level of radiation!”
The man with the cure shook his head: “And do what there? Steal my minerals?!” He laughed coldly: “You think I didn’t see you last month stealing the minerals of a weak Rank 2 and breaking his pickaxe? I think it’s a good thing to remove you from the mines. Less trouble for all prisoners, and more minerals for me!”
The giant kept begging desperately, but the man collected his items and went to the staircase, likely going to the mines.
The giant looked around, trying to find any prisoner to cure him, but they all avoided him like a plague… until his eyes landed on Anastasia.
Or to be precise… the syringe in her hand.
“The choice is yours.” Charis’ words resounded through her mind.
Anastasia could save that giant now. She would lose the remaining 10% of the cure, but the giant could survive long enough to get his own cure without falling into debt.
As a charity angel, that was the right thing to do. His past didn’t matter. He was now a desperate person with the potential to become a better man.
Or… she could simply refuse.
The choice was hers.
“I…”
