Chapter 56: The Border
The world was divided into five continents:
In one of the human continents far to the east, two big empires ruled.
The Tianmin Empire, home to rich culture and the most prosperous corporations, was located in the mountains of Qishan. This thriving land of a hardworking group of people had cemented their empire as the one with the greatest wealth and economical power.
Next to it was the esteemed Hiraza Empire — where warriors of great honor tirelessly honed their skills. Their martial art rivaled that of Uthalonicas. And at some point in history, the Rock Clan and the strongest warriors of Hiraza had exchanged secret fighting techniques and helped each other grow.
South west from that was a continent where the biggest country in the world lay. Nassar was the first country ruled by democracy, and it was known for the spices and unique stones they exported for centuries.
Going further west on the map, the elven continent could be found. Surrounded by perilous seas, no one dared to sail to this continent. If it weren’t for the rare traveler elves that proved their existence, this secluded race might as well have been a myth to the new generation!
And then in the northwest-most of the map, the human continent that was home to the strongest empire lay. The Olcour Empire held many nations and kingdoms under its dominion, for it offered things such as protection by the divine, bountiful energy via mana liquidation, state of the art technology, spiritual connection and the most formidable imperial army in the world.
South of that continent was Sekhtar, the demonic continent. The border between that godforsaken land and the human continent was being kept by a powerful family that was known for being able to borrow the power of the divine.
This border that separated the lands was an unbreakable barrier that extended far beyond the seas. No demons — not even their king — could cross this divine wall.
Which was why, when Neral found out that demons were able to hide within the human continent, she instantly knew someone from their family was sabotaging the barrier.
It had been going on for years. A person with enough authority was secretly letting the demons in.
The chain of command, no matter in what form, produced recorded documents. And these documents never lie. Even when Raymond Theocheirós tried to cover his tracks, Neral could tell with how he had been wanting to overthrow her husband that he was up to no good.
And just a little over a week ago, when a new massive project was being made, he instantly aimed for the control over human resources management. There wasn’t any other explanation to anything he had done up until now except for:
He wanted to let all the demons into their empire.
’I need to warn the guards,’ Neral thought, prompting the divine horse to gallop even faster. It was also an opportunity to finally prove Raymond’s filth.
Right behind her, a woman riding another horse followed close.
Just in case there was a need for a fight, Neral brought her most trusted warrior other than her family members. A person who had welcomed her and showed her the ropes when she first stepped into the manor.
But upon reaching the border, Neral’s heart sank and her blood ran cold from what she saw.
The barrier…
It was gone.
There were no guards, no watcher, or any signs of the Divinity Clan’s workforce.
“Are we too late?” she muttered, her horse slowing down to a stop.
Her assistant looked around and then said:
“Lady Neral, they have opened the border!”
What was more scary was that not a single soul could be spotted. Such an impossible scenario was right in front of them, yet the quietness was deafening.
’Don’t tell me… they have already crossed?’ she thought with dread.
And then suddenly, from beyond the murky lands, countless glowing pairs of eyes appeared in the distance. They started with a few dozen, growing more and more in number before eventually revealing the army of demons approaching them.
Neral clicked her tongue.
“Amelia, we need to go back and warn the clan.”
The black-haired servant looked at her with worry in her eyes.
“But, Lady Neral, Raymond will just intercept us. And right now, we have no proof of what he’s done until the manor is engulfed in war.”
They both turned their heads behind them when they heard a mocking laugh.
A man’s voice tore through the silence.
“Smart! You’re right, miss servant. You have no way of stopping us.”
Draped in robe, a brown-haired man was walking towards them. Twin daggers spun around his hands gracefully.
“My name is Silver Cloud. You might not recognize me, Neral, but we’ve met before. I am the man whose life you and your family have ruined.”
Neral got off her horse and faced the man.
“I do recognize you. And I didn’t ruin your life. You made the choice to oppose divinity and suffered the consequences.”
Silver Cloud rolled his eyes.
“Oh shut up you goody two shoes. There was no reason to shatter our dreams. We already made it clear that we wanted nothing to do with your religions.”
He sighed.
“Well, I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. Your clan will be destroyed, and so will the empire. Not even Axerion or Dheinyrus can stop the Demon King and his terrible army.”
Silver Cloud gripped his daggers and assumed a battle stance.
“These demons can’t just walk any faster, can they? At this rate, I’m gonna have to kill you myself.”
Neral closed her eyes and then whispered:
“Faith is my shield, and love is my sword. Gods above, your soldier yearns for your divine command.”
A sharp, crystalline longsword and a round, diamond shield appeared in her hands. She was suddenly covered in a set of azure, crystal armor.
Amelia also readied her spear while staying mounted on her horse.
Neral then stood tall and spoke.
“Your confidence is commendable as it is absurd.”
Silver Cloud laughed and then replied.
“I understand your power. But remember, Neral — I too, was once loved by the gods.”
And so, their battle began.
