Chapter 85: Holder of secret knowledge
Eons ago, when Cyreth first came crashing down to the mortal world, he first ended up in the middle of the southern ocean. He had possessed countless beasts underwater and dominated the marine life for ages.
He lived as a shark, a whale, a siren and even a giant squid for so long that he felt more at home underwater than on land. That was where he met this colossal being older than time itself. As a god, Cyreth could tell that Nessilum was not from this world. She possessed knowledge ahead of her time, saw things that didn’t exist, and used powers even the gods would find curious.
She was the only worthy company Cyreth had during his stay here in the southern oceans.
But alas, those creatures weren’t compatible enough for him to bring out his full powers. He eventually had to move out and search for a better vessel.
And that he did. With just a few problems, of course.
“This vessel doesn’t have a soul.”
After he said that, a spark of curiosity appeared in Nessy’s eyes.
He continued.
“He’s also able to suppress me at will, hence, I cannot take over his body fully. Right now, he’s only letting me take control.”
“Inside his mind, whenever he’s suppressing me, I find myself in a pocket universe. I wasn’t the creator of humans, but I know this is not normal. Do you know how these things are happening?”
Nessy mused for a second, cupping her chin with her fingers.
“Without a soul…” she muttered.
“If he still functions like a normal human even without a soul, then that only means one thing.”
Cyreth listened closely.
“His soul is not completely gone,” Nessy said.
“It must be somewhere in this world. The real question is: why is his soul not in his body. Did someone take it from him?” she added.
Cyreth spoke.
“Possibly. He said he is the heir to the Divinity Clan. And based on my observation, there have been a lot of questionable things this clan is involved with for a group that represents the holy ones.”
Nessy seemed to get an idea from the information Cyreth gave. Her head perked up and she raised her index finger.
“Now it makes sense!” she exclaimed.
“As I remember, only a god can take a human’s soul. Whether to bring it to heaven or throw it to hell, they are the ones to deal with that stuff, right?”
Cyreth couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Yes. But have you been reading novels lately? Your vocabulary has… broadened, if I do say so myself.”
Nessy responded.
“I have, but that’s besides the point!”
She paused and then added:
“Since he is connected to the clan that represents the gods, maybe a god did take his soul for some reason. And it is also because of that god that you are unable to fully possess him.”
Cyreth nodded.
“I see. That does make sense.”
He paced back and forth, processing the information.
“In that case, this god might interfere with my plans as well. I need to find them and…”
Before he could finish, Dhein had already switched back.
Nessy seemed to notice this change.
“So you are Dheinyrus…” she muttered with morbid amusement.
Dhein saw and heard everything, and he couldn’t help but want to ask his own questions. Though he had to ignore how terrifying this giant serpent woman was.
“How do I get my soul back?” he immediately asked.
Nessy shrugged.
“No clue. But one thing is certain: Your soul does exist, you just don’t have it. If you want it back, you must uncover all the mysteries around you by yourself.”
Dhein furrowed his eyebrows. When he was about to speak again, he heard footsteps coming from behind him and Krushe’s tired, heavy breathing.
She was dying from exhaustion as she desperately walked up to him. And when she lifted her eyes, her tired face was suddenly filled with terror.
She screamed at the top of her lungs.
“IT’S NESSILUM!!!”
When the giant woman acted her part, baring her massive fangs and making a scary face, Dhein couldn’t help but shudder himself.
“Rawr!” the giant intoned.
Krushe fell on her ass and desperately crawled backwards.
“Sire, why is she here?! She… she eats demons!”
Dhein whipped his face towards the giant who wore a guilty expression.
“I eat anything, to be fair,” she said, pouting.
Once everything had calmed down, Dhein asked another question. It was something he had been meaning to know.
“What is the difference between humans and demons?”
This question seemed to stun even Nessy herself.
It made her ponder.
“Well, biologically, the difference is like that between a chimp and a goat.”
Dhein stared intensely while he listened.
“Humans have evolved from apes and belong to the Hominidae family. Similarly, demons belong to the Bovidae family.”
Utter shock dominated Dhein’s system after hearing this revelation.
’So demons are basically homo erectus with horns?’
They weren’t this evil entity that humans had believed them to be. They were just evolved animals like them!
He quickly turned to Krushe.
“Answer me. What do demons eat?”
She hesitated for a moment and then answered:
“Fruits and vegetables.”
A single drop of sweat rolled down Dhein’s forehead.
“We can’t eat meat like humans do.”
Nessy was indeed telling the truth. Everything humans had known about demons was wrong. It was all a lie.
Dhein looked at the giant of the southern oceans and gratefully lowered his head.
“Thank you for answering my questions honestly. I will remember you and one day, I will repay your kindness.”
Flattered, Nessy bashfully scratched the back of her head.
“Oh, don’t mention it! I’m just glad to have some company. It’s quite lonely talking to sharks and whales all the time, you know?”
After thinking about it, she wasn’t really a scary creature. She most probably stayed in this place because this was where someone like her belonged.
He then turned to Krushe and offered a hand. Once she got up, he began to walk back to the general direction of the castle.
“I will come back for you, Nessy. I will create a world where you don’t have to be alone.”
He heard her sinking back into the water while saying:
“Good luck.”
Dhein made up his mind at that moment. He will be the king that the demons had been needing for a long time. Through him, the two races will finally be united, ending unnecessary suffering and conflicts.
He let out a deep sigh after realizing how much work that required.
