Chapter 90: Slow Transformation
Sekhtar had undergone considerable changes since Dhein arrived. When he first got here, even though the lands and environment were the same as that of the human continents, Sekhtar had this gloomy and somewhat depressing atmosphere. He couldn’t even compare the oppressive hopelessness that he saw here to the slums of Olcour capital. It was on a completely different level.
Now, the people were working together towards a common goal. The normal demons were no longer hiding in their homes, hoping that the stronger ones would spare them. It looked more like a functional society than ever.
Bit by bit, Dhein will fully transform this place.
He was walking around near the construction site of the hospital after visiting Fiorelle and the learners. They had finished digging the layout and were now in the process of smelting metals to be used as the beam supports and foundations of the building.
But while that was being built, a simple but spacious wooden structure with a straw roof acted as the temporary hospital. Sullivan found himself shorthanded as the number of patients didn’t shrink even after long hours of working.
When Dhein peeked inside the temporary hospital, the acting doctor gave him a pleading look.
Dhein smiled warmly and then said:
“Good luck. Do it for your late wife,” before leaving the scene.
As he continued to walk around the new capital of Sekhtar, his assistant, who used to be the former Demon King’s personal maid, Clarisse, approached him with a report.
The demon girl with long brown hair and a pair of glasses walked over to him while holding a black clipboard.
“King Dhein, Governor Hetaphar has an update about the scouting project.”
His face lit up upon hearing her report.
“Let’s give him a visit then,” he said.
To boost the nation’s progress, a team of capable professionals was desperately needed. Dhein issued an order to scout for individuals with valuable skills and talents. They had a rough time trying to discover people with industrial potential, so when Dhein heard that Hetaphar made some progress, he was visibly overjoyed.
After a bit of walking, they reached a humble town hall made of bamboo and planks. It was located at the very center of the province where anyone could come in should they have a concern.
Dhein entered the building and saw the old demon sitting behind his desk. His wrinkly face brightened upon seeing Dhein.
“My lord, thank you for visiting me,” he said.
Hetaphar gestured towards the three girls sitting on the chairs next to the wall.
“These wonderful people have come to me today. They said they wanted to volunteer for the vacant jobs that we are offering free of labor charge.”
He looked at the demonesses — they were all young and beautiful. One had short, dark hair and a pair of onyx horns on her forehead. The second one had a curly brown hair, almost making her horns on top of her head unnoticeable. The third one had a silvery white hair which somehow reminded Dhein of Shina. Her horns were on top of her head and she also wore a pair of glasses like Clarisse.
They stood up and lowered their heads before him.
The demoness with the short, dark hair spoke first.
“I am Tuzanya, and I want to be the doctor’s helper, my lord.”
“Before you arrived, the sick people used to come to me for help. I do my best to cure them and most of the times, we are fortunate enough to find a solution to the patient’s problem.”
A wide smile tugged at Dhein’s lips.
“You are qualified, Tuzanya,” he said. “Thank you for volunteering.”
The second to speak was the curly haired demoness.
“My name is Elise, and I want to be the doctor’s helper too, my lord. I am less knowledgeable in this field compared to Tuzanya, but I hope that you’ll give me a chance.”
Dhein replied with sincerity.
“Your willingness to offer help alone makes you qualified. We appreciate any help we can get, thank you. And don’t worry, you will surely learn as you gain more experience.”
And lastly, the silver-haired demon spoke.
“Greetings, my lord. I am Kaylen, one of the few who were fortunate enough to learn how to read, write and compute. I would like to join the learning hall as a teacher.”
Dhein nodded with a hint of optimism.
“You are accepted. I hope you like kids, because that’s the majority of students as of now.”
Kaylen smiled back
“That won’t be a problem, my lord.”
After that, Dhein led them to their respective workplaces. Sullivan was extremely thrilled to finally get a bit of help. Fiorelle was also pleased to have her first demoness colleague.
And even though they wanted to work for free, Dhein insisted to give them positive incentives. He believed that everyone should be rewarded for their hard work.
The quality of life in Sekhtar was slowly improving, but the next glaring issue was their batshit economy.
They used silver coins to buy stuff before Dhein arrived, which was utterly pointless. Without laws and markets, the price of goods varied from seller to seller. Furthermore, why would a berserker buy food when he could just beat the crap out of the seller and take all his products?
There was no other way but to use barter system for now. As they estabilish a stable internal trading values, Dhein would slowly introduce the use of currency. Besides, they would need a national bank and a team of capable accountants to ensure proper flow of money. That way, their economy wouldn’t collapse.
But it would take a lot of time. Since foreign trades was not an option either, the nation’s economy would have to be self sufficient, making the whole process a lot more difficult.
Dhein got back to his castle and into his office, Clarisse stood by, ready for any command.
He had read all of the reports from local provincial governors and considered them in all of his decision making.
His next target was to boost the production of food.
