“Obviously because I know an alternate path. Follow me.” The boy waved at us and started walking.

That pedantic attitude of his was starting to annoy me, but I didn’t have a better idea than following him, so we went after him.

The terrain near the mine entrance was sandy, but it was close to a forested area. We walked deeper into the woods until the boy stopped near a protruding rock with some foliage around it. The kid pushed it aside, revealing a small opening about half a meter wide.

“My friends and I found this some time ago, before the mine turned into a dungeon.”

“It’s pretty small,” Alicia commented.

“You can get in easily if you crawl. And the best part is that the passage doesn’t lead straight into a crowd of ghosts,” the boy said with a grin. “For some reason they’re all gathered near the main entrance. You’ll still have to fight, but it won’t be nearly as bad.”

“Does your mother know you’ve been sneaking into the dungeon?” Diane asked coldly.

“Huh!” The boy jumped in fright at Diane. It seemed the assassin could easily strike fear into his heart.

“Your visits to the dungeon have something to do with the attack, don’t they?” I asked Carl.

He nodded, his face carrying a sad expression. “I thought that if I reached the core and destroyed it, everything could go back to normal. Maybe my friends could come back to the city. But the Boss of the Ghosts ordered them to chase me. If it hadn’t been for Sarah, I…”

“You know the way from here to the core?” I asked, surprised.
