Chapter 381: Flirting On The Battlefield

Charon was laughing as he finished listening to the proposition. And it was a cold and mocking laugh

He leaned back in his seat as the laughter subsided, before finally speaking. “You come into my domain and offer me this? Do you take me for a fool?”

The strange man simply had a calm expression on his face as he waited for the god to finish.

Charon’s laughter faded, and his eyes dangerously. “Do you know that by just uttering those words, the King of Dragons may have already heard? He sees all. He knows all. I will be no party to such foolishness.”

The strange man still said nothing for a moment. Then raised the pendant hanging from his neck and held it up so that the green glow illuminated his face.

“You need not fret about the King of Dragons listening,” he said in a calm voice.

Charon’s expression shifted slightly.

The man continued. “I’m sure you can sense the power in this pendant. It is, in fact, why you haven’t attempted to attack or cast me out yet.”

Charon’s face became serious. He went mute as his eyes stayed fixated on the glowing green stone.

The strange man’s voice remained steady. “This power conceals me. My actions. My interactions. And it extends to anyone involved in them. I would never appear within the Dragon King’s thoughts, nor would he ever perceive the flow of my life within the threads of fate.”

He paused, letting that sink in.

“That is precisely why the King of Dragons cannot hear this conversation. And why you will forget it the moment it ends.”

“Hm.” Charon muttered as he leaned forward slightly, letting his fingers tap on the armrest of his throne. “You bring a proposition you want me to follow through with, and yet make it so that I am to forget when you leave?”

The man’s smile widened just a fraction. “You understand the power of the Dragon King, yet you fail to understand why such precautions must be taken.”

Charon was silent. He continued studying the man carefully, searching for any sign of deceit or weakness.

Then the strange man scoffed and said, “It seems you’re not satisfied still. Then let me show you.”

He held the pendant and stretched his hand forward as green miasma began to form around the ground at the base of the throne.

It swirled and coalesced, thickening into a solid shape. Then from the miasma, the lifeless body of Jorus materialized.

Charon was immediately taken aback. He stood from his seat abruptly as his staff of authority fell from his hands.

His eyes went wide, and for a moment, he looked almost human in his shock.

“How?” he muttered. Even for a god, that was too much.

The strange man looked down at the body with a calm expression. “I know that when the gods of this universe die, they simply cease to exist. Their bodies, all of it, are just gone. Erased from reality.”

He looked up from the body and met Charon’s eyes. “I know the only one who should be capable of this feat in this universe is the Dragon King. But unfortunately, his power isn’t the only one at play here.”

Charon took a step forward to stare at the lifeless form of his father. Jorus’s face was pale, his eyes closed, but he looked exactly as Charon remembered him.

The man continued. “She will grant your wishes. And she will even put a soul in this body, just like you remember. All you need to do is play the role you’re given at the right time.”

Charon looked at the lifeless body of his father, then back at the smiling strange man.

For a moment, he said nothing. Then he sat back down slowly, his eyes never leaving the body.

“Hm… go over that proposition again,” he said.

The strange man’s smile widened.

Back at the Holy Grail Dimension, in Dragonhold’s hall, Oberon whispered to himself as he watched the screen. “Azam, you’re separating too far from your partner.”

He had a slight tone of disapproval in his voice as he watched the captain of Velocity Strike sprint across the battlefield, leaving his assigned partner behind.

Meanwhile, on the battlefield, Azam looked like he was having the time of his life.

He moved in bursts of white light as his velocity magic propelled him forward at speeds that made him nearly invisible.

There were dents in the ground each time his foot touched it, and the air around him reverberated and warped from the sheer force of his movement.

His opponent was an Anane female beast tamer who had merged with a cheetah-like creature.

Her hybrid form was sleek and powerful. Golden-brown fur covered her arms and legs, and her eyes were sharp and feline, with pupils slit vertically. Claws extended from her fingertips, and her tail swayed behind her as she moved.

She was fast. And right now, she could compare to Azam. The both of them crossed long distances in the span of seconds, their bodies blurring as they clashed again and again.

Azam shot forward, closing the distance in an instant. He swung his fist toward her face.

She ducked beneath it with ease, her body fluid and controlled. Then she retaliated with a clawed swipe aimed at his ribs.

Azam’s body flickered to the right to avoid the claw attack, then he swung a kick aimed at her midsection.

She leaped backward, her feet barely touching the ground before she launched herself forward again.

They moved like streaks of light. One moment they were in one place. The next, they were hundreds of meters away, clashing mid-stride.

Azam grinned as he caught her wrist just before another clawed strike landed. “Not a lot of people can match me on speed.”

The woman grinned back, her feline eyes gleaming with excitement. “I share the same thoughts.”

They pushed off each other and separated, landing on opposite sides.

Then they charged at each other again. This time, Azam feinted left, then blurred to the right and came in with a punch aimed at the side of her face.

She saw it coming and leaned backward so that the punch passed through empty air, dodging by inches. At the same time, she wrapped her tail around his legs and pulled hard, trying to force him down.

Azam stumbled but recovered in an instant. He laughed. “Nice one.”

She smirked. “You’re not bad yourself.”

They circled each other for a moment, both breathing hard but neither showing signs of fatigue.

Then Azam shot forward again, moving even faster this time. His fist connected with her side, and the impact sent her skidding backward across the dirt.

But she didn’t fall. She planted her feet, absorbed the momentum, and launched herself back at him with a roar.

Her claws raked across his chest, tearing through his robe and drawing blood.

Azam hissed in pain but didn’t stop, instead he grabbed her wrist and pulled her forward, driving his knee into her stomach.

She gasped as air was knocked out of her lungs. But instead of pulling away, she leaned in and headbutted him.

The impact made both of them stagger back. Stars burst in Azam’s vision, but he shook his head to clear it.

They readjusted themselves and stared at each other for a moment. Then, they both grinned.

“You’re fun,” Azam said.

“You too,” she replied.

It looked like they were flirting.

Back at the fortress, Oberon watched the screen with narrowed eyes and a deep sigh. “Focus, Azam.”

But Azam wasn’t listening. He was too busy enjoying the fight.

He dashed forward again, and she met him halfway as their fists collided, sending a shockwave outward that kicked up dust in all directions.

They traded blow after blow, neither giving an inch. Every strike was met with a counter. Every dodge was followed by a retaliation.

The ground beneath them cracked and splintered from the force of their movements.

At one point, Azam caught her wrist mid-swing and pulled her in close. Their faces were inches apart.

“What’s your name?” he asked, still grinning.

She smirked, her breath hot against his face. “Kaia.”

“Azam,” he replied.

Then he released her wrist and swept her legs out from under her.

She hit the ground hard but rolled backward and came up in a crouch, her eyes still gleaming with excitement.

“Nice try,” she said.

“Heh.” Azam smiled.

Then they charged at each other again.

This time, their clash sent them both tumbling across the battlefield, rolling and grappling as they fought for dominance. Dust clouds rose around them as they wrestled for position.

Oberon sighed again and shook his head. “This is not what I meant by direct engagement.”
