I frowned, hands crossed over my chest in annoyance as we weaved our way through the hospital halls.

“I don’t know why we’re doing this,” I mumbled. “I’m fine.”

Rowan ignored me as he had been doing for the past hour.

I complained the entire time I ate breakfast and even made a big deal of sitting cross legged on the bed after, exercising my right to refuse treatment. Rowan just stared at me blankly and threw me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

The next thing I knew, we were on our way to the hospital.

“You may have forgotten but I have learned under pack doctors,” I hissed to my mate. “I am fine. I know I am.”

He led me into a large hospital room; the same one from before I realized.

The doctor stood in the middle of the room, hands clasped behind him respectfully. He bowed low once he noticed our presence.

“Welcome,” he said with a smile. “Please come in.”

“I apologize for the impromptu visit,” Rowan began smoothly. “It was urgent.”

The doctor waved him off. “The Luna’s well being is our utmost priority. Please, take a seat. What exactly is wrong?”

I crossed my arms over my chest, refusing to take a step forward. “Nothing is wrong.”

Rowan rolled his eyes and explained the events of this morning to the doctor who listened with furrowed brows and rapt attention.

Once Rowan was done speaking, he hummed slowly and turned to me. “Do you know when you had your last cycle?”

My cheeks flamed as I understood what he was asking. “I am not pregnant.”

“I’ve seen many women say that and leave with a positive result.”

“Well I am positive that I am not.”

He just smiled softly. “Would you at least let me take a blood sample?”

I huffed, stomping over to the bed and stuck out my arm.

He worked in silence, drawing a sample from my arm before excusing himself with the promise to be back soon.

Rowan and I sat in the room alone, silence descending upon us as we waited for his return. I tapped my foot anxiously against the floor, my insides twisting with unease and hunger which was weird considering I ate mere minutes before we came here.

“What if he is right?” Rowan asked suddenly.

I groaned aloud, not bothering to turn to him. “He’s not, this is all just a misunderstanding. If you’d just listened to me and let me stay home—”

“This isn’t a joke, Nyssa,” he snapped. “You could be fucking pregnant.”

It was then I understood just how terrified he was. I could hear it in his voice, and even his wall that he kept firmly erect between us could not stop his terror and anxiety from sneaking into my mind.

I turned to him only to find him watching me already, eyes wild with such intensity that it hit me in the gut.

Everything vanished—the hunger, the thirst, all of it.

“You say you aren’t,” he continued. “But there is a possibility. I haven’t been careful and you know that. I’m not saying I don’t want a kid or kids with you, I just…”

He exhaled deeply, running his fingers through his hair.

“We haven’t even talked about this. Hell, we just mated yesterday. I only just marked you. A child is a huge commitment and I want that with you… someday, but I’m not fucking ready to share you with a baby just yet. If that makes me selfish—”

“It doesn’t,” I cut him off. “I’m not ready to share you either.”

I saw his shoulders sag in relief once he realized that he was not the only one that felt that way.

I watched him, focusing on his face, his heavy breathing and the little emotions I could feel from him, anything but the possibility of me being pregnant right now. I couldn’t be pregnant.

As if on cue, the door creaked open and the doctor walked in.

I glanced at the clock on the wall, surprised to see that over thirty minutes had passed since then.

“I apologize for the wait,” he said slowly, making his way further into the room, hands clasped behind his back. “I expedited it as much as I could.”

My heart hammered in my chest at his stoic expression.

I tried to read him, tried to glimpse happiness or confusion but he was an expert at keeping his face unreadable. The more I searched, the more confused I got.

“I have good news and bad news,” he said and my stomach dropped.

Good news?

Bile crawled up my throat at the thought of the so-called ’good news’ being a pregnancy. It would be good for the palace, for the kingdom as a whole. After all, they’d be getting an heir. However, I couldn’t tell if it would be good news for me.

“You’re not pregnant.”

For a moment, I felt nothing, and then a wave of mind-numbing relief crashed over me.

I exhaled shakily, heart pounding violently in my chest as I buried my face into my hands.

“I fucking knew it,” I whispered to myself, unable to hide my smile.

I turned to Rowan, expecting to find a similar expression on his face but he was quiet, his face like carved marble.

My brows furrowed in confusion. He didn’t want a baby either, why wasn’t he rejoicing?

“What’s the bad news?” Rowan asked, voice cold and hollow.

“Yes, that,” the doctor cleared his throat, rubbing his hands on his pants. “You’re not showing any symptoms.”

My head cocked to the side. “Symptoms of what?”

“Of anything. According to your lab results, you are perfectly fine. You are as healthy as a horse. There is no explanation for why you should be feeling the way you do.”

My stomach dropped.

The excitement I felt earlier bled away at once and I was left with a feeling of emptiness—a pit, wide and deep in my chest.

“So what now?” I asked slowly, swallowing a knot in my throat.

“We run more tests, but if I’m right—and I usually am—whatever is wrong with you isn’t medical.”
