Chapter 216: Goodnight, Husband

Edmund nodded. “I can change my hair color, eye color, even my height a little. It’s not a perfect disguise, but it’s good enough to fool most people.”

Primrose’s eyes lit up with excitement when she heard that. She couldn’t help but imagine what he might look like after changing his appearance.

She was just about to ask him to show her, but before she could say a word, she sneezed a few times in a row.

“Would you like me to light a scented candle for you, Your Majesty?” asked Marielle after she finished brushing Primrose’s hair.

Primrose thought for a moment. She liked lighting scented candles at night because it helped calm her mind, but since Edmund had a sensitive sense of smell, he probably wouldn’t feel comfortable inhaling a strong scent all night.

Besides, it seemed like her husband preferred her natural scent more than any fragrance in the world.

“My husband will be sleeping in my chamber tonight, and I don’t think he likes strong scents very much,” Primrose said with a smile. “Maybe you can just change the bedsheets instead.”

Marielle quickly nodded. “I’ll do it right away, Your Majesty!”

She hurried the other maids to get fresh linens and began making the bed immediately. Marielle also cleaned the bedroom so thoroughly that not a single speck of dust could be seen anywhere.

The maids usually cleaned Primrose’s bedroom whenever she was out or sitting on the balcony, so she never really saw them working.

But now that she finally got to watch them work with her own eyes, she was completely speechless. They cleaned the entire room in less than ten minutes, how was that even possible?!

Back at the Duke’s manor, the maids needed at least thirty minutes to clean her smaller bedroom. But here, the beastfolk maids worked fast and efficiently, like well-trained soldiers.

Even the weaker beasts had stamina that couldn’t be underestimated.

“Do you need anything else, Your Majesty?” Marielle asked politely.

Primrose blinked a few times, pulling herself out of her thoughts. “No, that’s enough. Thank you, Marielle,” she replied with a soft smile. “You can leave now.”

With a slight bow, Marielle and the other maids left the room, leaving Primrose all alone. She sat on the edge of the bed, waiting for Edmund. But for some reason … he still hadn’t come.

Was he … not planning to sleep beside her tonight?

No … that didn’t sound right.

Oh no. What if he was trying to release himself before coming to her? Primrose scrunched up her nose at the thought. That’s … kind of perverted, but also, not entirely impossible.

After all, they hadn’t touched each other in three days, and Edmund might be suffering quite a bit if he had to hug her and sleep beside her all night without doing anything.

“Why are you so late?” Primrose finally opened her eyes just a little. “I thought you weren’t coming.”

Edmund stepped closer, and without a word, Primrose opened her arms toward him, asking for a hug without saying anything.

Edmund quickly took off his coat and sat at the edge of the bed, leaning down to pull her into his arms.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I was just talking with Sir Leofric before I came here.”

Primrose didn’t say anything at first. She simply buried her face in his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of his pheromones mixed with the faint trace of soap.

“Is it about my ability?” she asked softly.

Edmund paused for a moment, and that small silence was all she needed to know the answer.

Primrose felt a little guilty for thinking the worst. She had assumed he was staying away because he couldn’t control his dirty thoughts and needed space to calm down.

Edmund let out a hum and said, “I asked him to speed up the research about your ability. We need to understand it before it gets out of hand.”

He gently rubbed her back as he continued, “I don’t want you to face this blindly, not knowing what’s happening to your own body. So please … stop worrying, alright?”

Even though Primrose had once told him she wouldn’t let fear control her, Edmund knew, there would still be moments when fear crept in. Moments when she’d feel helpless or scared of her own ability.

That was why he asked Leofric to fastened his research.

“Maybe I shouldn’t talk too much until then,” Primrose giggled, brushing her fingers against his chest. “I’m scared I might accidentally order someone to do something bad.”

She paused for a moment, then looked into his eyes. “But more than that … I’m afraid I might make you do something terrible.”

Edmund gently pulled away from the hug, just enough to see her face. “Don’t worry,” he said. “Like Leofric said, I’m not that easy to kill.”

He studied her face for a moment and quickly noticed that her eyes looked a little swollen.

[She cried too much today, so no wonder her eyes look puffy now,] Edmund thought, a pang of guilt hitting his chest. [She’ll probably have trouble opening them tomorrow morning.]

“Wife,” he said gently, his voice full of concern, “can I kiss you? Just a kiss. I promise, nothing more.”

Primrose chuckled, already guessing that her husband probably wanted to kiss her swollen eyes. “You can.”

He leaned in and kissed each eyelid with a tenderness that made her heart ache. He kissed them more than once, so gently, until Primrose could feel the swelling easing away.

“What about your lips?” Edmund asked softly, his eyes warm and full of affection. “Can I have a goodnight kiss too?”

Primrose didn’t reply right away. Instead, she leaned forward and kissed his lips twice “Good night, husband.”

Edmund swallowed hard, frozen for a moment. Her sweet smile was more dangerous than any temptation in the world.

[Shit … I already released myself before coming here, and still … my damn boner woke up again like it has no shame.]

Primrose let out a small sigh, no longer feeling bad because she had guessed it perfectly.

Unfortunately, she really wasn’t in the mood to do anything sensual tonight.

[I’ll be fine … I’ll be fine,] Edmund told himself firmly in his head. [I just need to put a pillow between us … so my wife doesn’t feel this damn boner.]
