Chapter 64: The King’s Sleepless Night

Primrose found herself sleeping on something strange. The bed wasn’t as soft as usual, and it felt warm, almost too warm.

As she slowly opened her eyes, she realized she wasn’t lying on her bed at all. Instead, her head was resting against Edmund’s chest. His steady heartbeat echoed softly in her ear, rising and falling like a quiet lullaby.

“But I don’t want you to do that!” she said quickly. “At least … not when you don’t even have a reason to stay awake.”

Primrose blinked and quickly followed. “I can walk by myself …,” she reminded him softly. “It’s not like something bad will happen just because I walk alone from your study to my bedroom.”

“We never know about that, my wife,” Edmund replied, his tone unusually serious. “There’s no place in this world that’s truly safe.”

As they walked side by side through the hallway, Primrose kept her eyes on the floor, pretending to focus on walking.

Instead, she listened closely to Edmund’s steady footsteps beside her, to the soft sound of his coat brushing against the floor, and to the small sighs he let out now and then.

Primrose hated to admit it, but his presence was strangely comforting.

“Your body might be aching from sleeping in an uncomfortable position,” Edmund said. “Go back to sleep in your bedroom. I’ll ask the maid to bring breakfast to your room once you wake up.”
